A lot of the time why a diesel gets addicted to either is because it brakes the first or first and second piston rings. Have seen some rods get bent just a bit. But very rare. Them rods are tough. Back then either didn’t have oil in it and would wash the cylinders out and scar them. Now it’s usually from broken rings. I call either death to a diesel in a can! Not needed. If it don’t start on its own something is wrong.

A 3204 is half of the 3208. Most truck mechanics considered the 3208 a " throw away" engine. They were both very prone to head gasket failure.that is built on a 910 loader chassis.probably has the old glass water separator on it. Those things suck air when the rubber seals dry out

You KNOW!!!! that first battery was nOOO good becauz you pounded on it with that d@#*^ wrench!! Seriously tho", I ran an auto, truck & Large marine (130 ' +) electric repair business for a few years... DO you know how many starters, switches, alternators (& especially in Macks.. Starter relay solenoids ) BLEW UP.. both literally & figuratively... because of battery cables that were just pounded on & not tightened properly! I could explain the physics, but just know that as resistance (bad battery cable connections,,,) goes up, AMPERAGE goes up..(IN these big diesels.. up to 1-2000 amps!! (Kill ya in a second!!). Please, don't be like all the rest.. Loosen the bolt, Clean & fully "TAP" the cable end down !!!& then tighten! We made A LOT OF $ because of weak terminals.

Just a bit of information. Back in 1990s I worked in a limestone quarry here in PA. We had half dozen 773b 🐈 rock trucks. Anytime we had to drain cooling system down for any reason,was Very Important to bleed the air out of cooling system,or you risked cooking seals and orings in the cylinder head deck plate. Just sayin.

Those voltage testers are not that much help testing batterys . I have charge batterys ,that charge up and the charger kick off , many of them only to find out the battery is junk , but the charger says other wise > charged up . The battery load testers , they are only slightly use full and battery gases will explode ,those coils in load testers get hot . I seen a 950 cat battery blow up in a guys face one time , one of the 2 batterys got lower in charge than the other , even a spark around the top area when batterys are under load will explode > they put off more gasses under load and heated up . You may already know that . You also know if acid gets in anyones eyes ( IMMIDATELY >>>> flush holding their eye lids open with a lot of water ,several times ,or you will be blind and a chance of it anyway . The only way I have found to know exactly about a batterys condition is a meter I bought , it will tell you the resistance of a battery and tell you the cold cranking amps a battery is putting out compaired to the batterys stated CCA . If you dont know what a battery is putting out , you dont know jack about the battery . I charged up a battery couple years ago full charge, wouldnt turn the engine over , I checked the 600CCA battery it had 89CCA . I had to replace my harley battery this spring I noticed it seemed a little weak it had lost about 150CCA of 400CCA . I bought a cen-tech digital battery analyzer 66892 from harbor freight . I had advanced auto check a battery with their large expensive meter then checked it with mine same reading . if you charge a battery allow it to settle for 1-2 hours before testing . Anyway do what ever you want , thats what I do ........

I’ve been working on diesels on railroad for well over 20 years my father and grandfather did the same thing. I would never recommend spraying ether into a diesel engine ,can break rings Pistons rods but at the same time I’ve known plenty of guys that do it and don’t have problems but as long as you have good fuel delivery and compression and timing diesel should always fire up even if it Has to crank a little longer. I use wd-40 as a last resort instead of ether. Great videos though guys really enjoy them,brings the joy back into working on things for me. 👍

Diesels get addicted to either because it makes the compression just a tad too high and it ends the rod over at the small end. The slightly bent rod reduces the compression just a tad and now when the cylinders are dry you got to have that little extra snoot full of either to pop it off, once it’s running it’ll stay running with out because the cylinders are lubed and sealed up just a little bit more.
@WidowUK
@WidowUK 3 года назад
Either burns much hotter causing fractures to valve seats and rings it also burns hot enough to clean the carbon out of ring gaps. This in turn lies compression ratios making harder to start. I’ve seen major damage to pistons also in my many years of building Land Rover engines from using either to start them. Your better off using a blow lamp in air intake to warm the air this is a much safer way to save engine damage, unless your silly enough to use a burning rag that gets such in air intake ive seen that too on a jcb 10c many years ago it killed the engine for sure
@joelwhelan9848
@joelwhelan9848 3 года назад
Before glow plugs and intake heaters diesel engines came factory with either injection for cold starts and those motors are still running today Either is just a scape goat for people who don't maintain their engines and when a problem occurs causing hard starting people blame either for its eventual failure In a stone cold engine a slightly hotter combustion isn't going to be able to do damage except create heat resulting in perfect conditions for diesel to ignite If you need starting fluid the issue is not the fluid but the engine itself cold starts or long term storage without starting is different and don't even come into the equation I've ran a diesel engine on starting fluid and burnt 4 litres of it while hitting the limiter numerous times without any problems Its just a wives tale that most believe
@WidowUK
@WidowUK 3 года назад
It has the same affect as putting an engine flush in a high mileage motor cleaning the carbon out of, this in turn causes most older engine into oil burners and final they won’t start well. I’m a diesel engineer I’ve worked for the miners try of defence for 35yr building engines and I can tell you either is not a good choice to start a Diesel engine they become use to it due to lack of compression as the either has removed the carbon from the rings. I myself would not even dream of using either to start anything at all there’s no need to use it in most cases a gas blow lamp in air intake does a much better job warming the air.
@joelwhelan9848
@joelwhelan9848 3 года назад
@@WidowUK creating enough heat with starting fluid to temper the rings is next to impossible as most engines run 500+ Celsius egts As for oil burning thats caused by flushing the carbon around until it blocks the oil ring drain holes making the oil ring pointless with nowhere for the oil to go Achievable on any four stroke motor if its dirty enough and its more logical to just keep running cheap oil while changing it as soon as its black instead of using any type of flush
@WidowUK
@WidowUK 3 года назад
@@joelwhelan9848 so your a diesel engineer like me you’ve worked on Diesel engines for 35yrs and seen what either does to the insides of an engine ? I have I’ve even seen the rods put throw the side of the engine block and heads blown off from miss use of either. Either burns very hot it very explosive it’s why when starting an engine on it you see it hard to turn over as it flash point is low so it ignited before the piston is at dtc so it kicks back you also here it rattle the pistons in the bore this makes the pistons mis shaped they become oval as the pivot on the small end and eventually they break the bottom skirts off the piston and once that’s done it your rebuilding the engine this is not to mention shell damage and head gasket issues.
