Will it start? Propane powered farm tractor has seen its better days! 

When something is sitting that long, It is just about always the points. Usually a piece of sandpaper will fix them up. The piece under the rotor button with the notches, is a dust cap. It should just pop off. Points should be visible then. Great job, guys.

I recommend watching videos from Junkyard Digs, Kevin knows ignition systems very well, as does Derek at Vise Grip Garage. The points are going to need filing or sanding for sure, once you figure out how to get to them. The hot wire from the ignition switch goes to the positive terminal of the coil, the ballast resistor should be in the circuit when the key is in run. The other wire from the negative side of the coil goes into the distributor to the points and condenser. Touching a grounded wire to the negative terminal of the coil will create a spark if the coil is good. God bless you too brother 🙂

Back home in Mississippi on the family catfish farm they had checkerboard square ponds as far as the eye could see... They had about 25 Allis Chalmers propane tractors for one thing and one thing only. They turned a large paddlewheel mounted on two wheels with a long PTO shaft that was backed into the ponds and left running for extended periods to aerate the water on really hot still days. They had a couple large PTO powered pumps mounted the same way, that hooked up to 6-8 inch lines for filling or draining ponds. These tractors were lonely workhorses and didnt move much. They were VERY reliable. Economically viable. Absolutely essential for keeping the fish alive. Granted many ponds had permanently mounted electric paddles in fact 85-90% did. But back in the day those tractors were all they had! Many more than are still running today! Fact is Charles said that the tractors cost about the same to run and were more reliable!!!

you have to have 12v to the positive side of the coil. it then goes from the negative side to the dist. and it builds up a magnetic field in the coil when the points open the field collapses in the coil and induces a voltage in the secondary windings. That is hooked up to the center of the coil tower. it is supposed to be 12 volts to the coil to start it and 6 volts to run depending on where the key is turned.

All you have to do is pull the rotor off of the distributor, that cover for the points just lifts out of there but it’s probably going to be tight from rust. Also you can just run a positive wire from the battery straight to the positive side of the coil so you know you have direct power to it.

I have a 1958 Case 511b, that tractor appears to be very similar in age and style to mine. One of mine has that same distributor. Under the rotor just pry the cover off to access the points no special wrench needed to get Inside

The cap underneath the rotor is just a dust cap. Take your scerwdriver and pop it up.the points are under that a set on high lobe pur a small dab of grease on the cam lobs for the points to rub on that should be 12 volt negative ground

My propane trucks also had a primer on the propane regulator which you want to use to get it to start. Once it started, the engine will help the regulator deliver the propane vapor

A lot of people forget to clean the points after sanding them .I was taught to always run a clean puece of paper betweenthe loints after sanding or fileing them .The paper pulls the grit n fillings n any oil mist off the points .They spark much better after you do that procedure !

The small valve on the tank when open when you fill will blow liquid out when it is 80% full the bigger one you took of is your fuel gauge. Turn the dial till liquid comes out and that’s the amount of fuel you have. Starts easier on liquid.

When I was 16 years old I worked for a soybean farmer who had a wide front end 830 Case with a Case-o-matic. It took for ever to turn that thing around at the end of the rows. It had a four row front mounted cultivator. I worked for another farmer who had a 806 Farmall, that was a dream to drive.

Remove rotor pry off the cover under that rotor points are right under it that cover was just put on some models to keep dirt and moisture out.. the propane system is real easy just need to remove line from the original tanh and make a hose to hook to your tank.. that part you called a regulator is a valve that only let the propane flow when it gets vacuum from the engine. It's a safety valve

Excellent video Hank :) , Wiley :) also cap under rotor maybe need Channel Locks screw off counterclockwise and points be under it should be 0.25 foul and Sparkplugs be Champion at .44 gap ! Also want say get Superission wires too ! Plus take cap and rotor when by farm supplies store match it with right ones ! Coil should be 6 volt positive ground type unless you doing 12 Volt Negative ground to and Balis Restior + to key ignition and - ground on on Coil ! Also that metal condosnser in points ground goes cap screws positive to points ! Plus on screw distributor very rust up need clean rust off put thin layer Die Electric grease on threads so get points power ! Also first night release video got 20 mins of video then froze up and other videos are okay no problem and not sure happened!

Hey fellas, I saw something on another channel that may be useful. One of those big vintage tractor places in the Midwest did this. I'm 71, mechanic all my life and this one was a good trick. The party had a stuck engine. Tried everything. Rolling, filling with PB, etc. The guy fussed because it was expensive. He poured a $20 bottle of iodine in each cylinder. He explained how it worked. Basically some sort of chemical reaction.. You leave it overnite, and it " unwelds" the pistons. Never tried it.

The heavy duty marine solenoids are good to have I keep one in my truck for emergencies like that.

Thanks for the video Hank and Wiley. I have no experience with propane so can’t help much. My guess is that you need new points and rotor cap assembly piece. Is there enough propane vapor to at Least start it snd run for a bit?????? Probably so. Will be interesting to see if she runs with the new pieces. Anxious to hear what happens gentlemen. Thanks. Pop the cap off & see if the points spark & file or sand the contacts a little, & a hot to the positive side of the coil & if no spark it's the coil or points / condenser bad if you get no fire from a plug wire

You got to leave the wire plugged in to the coil and check the side that plugs in to the distributor

points ignition is the first things to service and to look at they are always needing cleaned

if ya don't know old school points and condenser you have to power coil on other side to make sure points get power

The points cover looks like one I have and I think yours is just rusted in place . My cover like yours fits on a ledge around the inside of the distributor and has one tang that fits in one recess holding it from spinning but its nothing more than a cover . The resister going bto the coil kicks down the voltage from 12 volts to around 8 volts saving wear from over sparkage . It will work without it it just sparks more and the points dont last as long . good going guys , your on the right track now

That's just like my Case distributer. Just pull the rotor off and the metal cap is keyed on way and just pops off!

Guys take a wire from the positive side of the battery to the coil pack clean your points put your rotor bug and cap back on and see what happens that's the easiest way to bypass the key in a breaker Point ignition system

With a combined age of 140 years on this planet, and living in a country surrounded by cars, your knowledge of vehicle electrics is about the same as what I knew at the age of 8. If you ever find those points, it is a good idea to use a metal nail-file, to give them a clean. Also to test the spark, all you need to do is connect a plug to the wire from the top of the coil, and open and close the points manually with a screwdriver.

rotor will pull off, cap after, clean points , the system will not work without a condenser, wire positive battery to positive on coil, negative from coil should have condensor in line to distibutor. points gapped a .016

Pull the plastic dust cover off to get to the points. When the points are open there should be voltage on the side of the points the wire is attached. By touching the wire side of the points with a screwdriver and touching metal you should get a voltage ark.. When the points are closed and you touch the points with the screw driver or test light there should not be a spark or voltage because it is grounded. If your test light still indicates voltage with the points closed they need to be filed because the voltage isn't getting to the ground side of the points. Each time the points close and are grounded it cause a high voltage spark to go from the coil to the center of the distributer cap. To check your coil, have voltage going to the coil and points. With the points open and the coil wire coming out of the coil next to the motor-metal- use a screwdriver to ground the points. Each time you make contact with a ground you should see a spark jump from the coil wire. With the coil wire being really old you might not want to hold it at the time you ground the points. That spark can make you hurt yourself and talk ugly at the same time. lol Points when not used in a long time almost always need to be filed so as to make good contact. A fingernail file will work. Also, there has to be a gap when the points are open. A drink pull tab will do to get a gap to get by with if you don't have a feeler gauge available.

A lot of comments are right. Take dist. cap off, pull rotor, pop dust cover with your knife, sand or file points...don't mess with gap if points open and close. When points are closed with 12v to coil open points and coil wire should spark near ground. Condenser is a must, resistor aint. Good luck but pass on future gas engines😊

You should be able to get a flat head screwdriver to pry off that top under the rotor to get to points you only need to run a wire from positive side of battery to coil for power clean the points up by using sandpaper in between were the points open and close that’s all. Before you put back together you can use a screwdriver to open close points to see if you’re getting spark. Just stick a spark plug in the end of coil wire that goes in center hole of distributor cap and you should see spark as you open and close points. But make sure you have a wire from battery to coil.

You have to have 12V from key to resistor and from resistor to coil and from coil to distributor. All coils are 6V therefore the reason for Resistor. Pop up the dust cover under rotor button to access points. Clean points with sand paper. Should Start if you have fuel

I know the coil has to have power. if the condenser is bad its output will be low or none I believe. the cap should just pop off, there may be screw. the points can be cleaned with a strip of fine sandpaper, just a few pulls don't sand them off. then crank the engine to see if the points have spark. if they do put it together and check the plugs. hope that's helpful, I could be wrong though.

When I work on anything that old that hasn't ran for 6 months or longer I do plugs wires cap rotor points and condenser and it looks like you pull the rotor off and carefully pry up on the plastic cover with a flat head screwdriver

After watching many Many episodes, I can see where you need to bring a small fold up table to put your tools on when working on things 👍

That is a dust cover on the distributor. It pops right off. Kinda surprised you don't have a 12 v test light and spark tester. Breaker point ignition is dead simple. It will run without a resistor. I like the coil with internal resistor.

That early iron looks mean guys ,hunk till wily to check the ecu it might be unplugged.I'm excited waiting for that relic to wake up,wonderful video .👍

Pull the black Rotor straight up.. It just presses on the shaft, and then use a screw driver to pry up on the plate ,and points are under that..

Most of the time it is dirty points. They need to be really clean to spark.

hot to coil + the points under the rotor button and that cover that just pries right off is what makes ground to the coil when closed it sends ground to the - on the coil charging it when it looses ground again from points it will fire the wire plugged into center of the coil .... some coils need a resistor the little round thing mounted to the side of the old coil and others are internally resisted and dont need it

Hank you can run that tractor on gasoline too just get a little bottle put a small hole in the cap and dribble in the carburetor. You don’t have to use propane starter fluid and gasoline will work

If it's a 6 volt coil and you have a 12volt battery you need to connect up the resistor. Check that the points are opening and closing as the engine turns.

After you get the tank filled and before you introduce fire, best to check for propane leaks. That's a lot of old gas lines. You don't want to find one the hard way.

Run a wire live side of the battery to the live side of the coil . That will give ignition.

Put some heat on the block around the plugs. It may help them release. Every distributor I've seen like this, the dust cover should pop off. It may need a little PB.

Your ice story and theory was funny. We have the same thing at our local store. So much stuff they just leave outside on the honor system. I was driving through Antimony Utah and stopped to refuel. Just one gas pump at the mercantile. I walked into the store and gave her my Visa and said fill it up on the pump. She was confused and said how much did you pump? Uh....... Don't I have to pay first? She said no you need to pump the gas first so I know how much to charge you. That's when I realized I was in Merica where stuff just makes sense and everything is on the honor system.

You gotta run a jumper wire from battery to the coil with 12volts.

Propane doesn't use a return, just hook your bottle up to the inlet on the regulator and it will start just fine on vapor. Your coil should say on it whether or not it needs a resistor. It looks to me like the cover on the points is just rusted in there. Take a screwdriver and lightly tap on it where it meets the distributor body and a little lube and see what happens.

I worked on propane cars and trucks for awhile they are a PITA. Throw a carb back on it and run it on gas. They tried injecting propane into Diesel trucks for testing to see if they could reduce emissions but it caused them to run hot.

The plug in top of that distributor should just pull off ? Maybe stuck from rust Allis chalmers does anyway ? The ones Ive delt with all ac delco distributors even international / case. Points more than likely need a lil scuffing to break the glaze from sitting so long coil and condenser are a must after all that time and plugs you guys are great I love the channel GOD BLESS and Merry Christmas

You need to power the coil on the positive side of the coil and the negative side of the coil goes to the points

The problem is not the coil it’s the points you got to clean them and they should work

That cover for the points lifts off also make sure there is a gasket under that starter when it does start it will push oil out the starter hole

lp stands for liquid propane it goes in one side of the vaporizer and the reduction in pressure vaporizes the propane. propane is odorless until they add an order to it to smell for leaks. a spray bottle with soap and water makes a good leak detector. so does a match but that costs more.

It's not a socket and that does not screw down the points are under their that's right but it's just stuck I had a tractor just like that for 50 years

It won't run off off that twenty pound tank. Your gonna need a forklift or buffer tank that is liquid withdrawal. You will need 5o feet the fitting that goes on the tank valve. After that it is 1/4 inch pipe if I remember right.

I rebuild ensign regulators and carburetors…one of the only guys in the country try who will. I love LP’s! Easier than gasoline

That's A twisted tab and it pops up to open and remove the cap cover. To clean the points contacts and gaping settings.,or it just pulls up.,or try Easley with A 🪛 screwdriver to pry up.,or very gentle then go from that point forwards by cleaning and installing whatever new parts it may need.,or take to fix the issues it has wrong with it.

Take a pice of wire an put it on the POS side of the coil an put it on the + on the bat then it should spark and if it doesn't then it will be ur points

That plate on top should Lift right off, Clean Points with sand paper, If the Condenser is good you should get spark, 80 % of the Time you will need a Condenser, They go Bad. Power go;s to Positive side of coil, Neg to Distributor.

you don't need the resister to start and run it will have a hotter spark for a little while before it burns up the coil.

If you’ve got spark and there’s compression and that regulator after you clean it and rebuild, it is putting out a vapor that engine should start immediately after cranking it don’t need starting fluid with propane

You guys give it a good shot you pop that dust cover on the points off by knife or screwdriver just work the screwdriver around the edge it should pop off

The fuel situation for safety purposes hank to just start the tractor get a spray bottle like an old windex bottle or something put gas in it just spray it in the carburetor use some eether too you can keep it running spraying gas you don’t need propane man.

Just pull that part under the button up. I'm sure the points are corroded up bad

Propane is not that difficult if it was sitting so long points and plugs definitely need to be cleaned. A new condensor is definately on the list to be replaced. Also check for plugged filters. I have worked on propane forklifts for many years

you need the power 12vt positive on the + side of the coil the negative side goes to the distributor then it will fire you are hooking the power wire on the wrong wire

that points cover should just pry up clean them points with sand paper coil usually never goes bad lift that cover and clean ir points after cleaning them flick the points u will see a spark if they spark u have fire to ur cap and plugs may be a notch on distributor shank where points are mite hafta trun it to a notch that lifts points
