The recent publication of the Kalašma tablet has revealed a new Indo-European language with many affinities to other languages on the Anatolian branch, but what else will this enigmatic language teach us about Anatolian and the Indo-European tree as a whole?
Daniel Schwemer, Elisabeth Rieken and Ilya Yakubovich are the researchers behind the content of today’s video.
Sorry for the slightly clickbaity title 😉👍

BTW - the cuneiform in the thumbnail isn't Kalašma.

Yeah it'll be interesting if this upcoming presentation will feature any breakthroughs in understanding the text, particularly the lines on the reverse of the tablet.

But..... what does it sound like I wonder? Also, maybe changes in the morphology of this new language may be able to point to where this city was located relative to Hattuša depending in loan words in the area of known languages. Man this is exciting.....

I'm sure linguists will debate how it sounded for many many decades to come. It could well shed some light on its origin yes, and at the moment there are a number of vocabulary items which are obscure like on the first reverse line of the tablet. Interesting times indeed!

@@LearnHittite If someone had told me that an undiscovered IE language was going to emerge, I wouldn't have bet on the Anatolian branch, since it's so old and not as well attested, so it's one of the best surprises in recent memory. Thank you again for your coverage of all this.

I know, it really is a great time. And we owe it all the the Hittites and their love of recording the ritual practice of others in their language. It's the same with Hurrian too, we'd know a lot less about that of it weren't for the Hittites and their scribes.

Both Greek and the Anatolian languages belong to the Indo-European family, so there is at least that connection.
