What I will say about Smith is this: 4th round tape, 2nd round flashes, top-10 physical traits, above average testing. He also is coming off the best performance of his career in the last 4-5 games of the 2023 season. In particular, his play against Florida and Wisconsin really stand out to me. Still not what I'd consider second round tape, but definitely more consistent, especially as a pass rusher. Felt like he was starting to gain confidence in his movement again. Biggest issue to me is A. pad level -- his length and power allow him to overcome this at times, but boy it is a problem. He's a classic waist bender too, with a high cut frame, and I am not sure if he can ever really optimize this. Armstead is the master of playing with good leverage in spite of a major disadvantage, so hopefully he can teach him, but their levels of flexibility and bend are very different. And B., as you made clear, while he has powerful hands, he doesn't use them consistently and there isn't always a plan, which coupled with the pad level concerns, sees him getting blown up way too often. That said, the overall trajectory is promising, especially if you factor the impact of the injury. PFF had him with an above-average 76 pass rush grade, and I think that was largely borne out by the tape I saw. He's a reach and projection, but if he stays on this path, you can feel good about where he will end up. You see the nice spin counter her had vs Wisconsin?

Like you I Would have preferred others at the pick. Kris Jenkins for example…. However. His upside is ridiculous so I’m not surprised that this is the direction Baalke went. I do really like that we have Armstead though, as he is the perfect mentor for Maason. If he can 7n,kick his potential it’s an unbelievable pick. But he could be another Henderson/Chaisson pick. I’m hoping for the best….

I think he will have an okay rookie, he will be solid against the run and sub par in pass rush. His stats won't be eye-popping, but he will show flashes, and year 2 will be much better

I agree...if he stays healthy...Maason Smith is SO athletically talented...he looks like he has Travon Walker type athleticism...that he should be at worst a Solid NFL player for 8 yrs minimum...and COULD become a VERY GOOD to potentially Dominant Player because his ceiling is so high.

If he’s a rotational player this year and a starter next year: That’s a massive W.

I think this is going to be close to a redshirt year for Smith. He will play, but it's hard to see him being ready to compete at a high level based on the tape...unless he really takes a leap forward with respect to play strength, technique, and of course recovery. The lateral agility and flexibility are long-term concerns for me though.

It's cool you can adapt your opinions. The problem is the average fan can't and for this guys whole career he will be picked too soon no matter what he does on field.
