Matt, this is true. I've been hurt by Christians, to the point that I turned away from God. For a long time. A while back, I was listening to Genesis. The part where it said, and Abraham believed, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And I stopped and said, Lord, I believe in You, You chose me, I choose You. When I did, the Holy Ghost fell on me, that had never happened before. I was crying, filled like a waterfall had dropped on me. I realized then, that it was man that I had looking to, and not God. But I had blamed the Lord, for what man had done to me. I finally had Peace and Joy.

Money can get you the things that make you happy. But that's often very short, most of the time, and it doesn't necessarily bring you the thing that gives you joy. If you rely on it too much, it can cripple you in certain other areas. The extreme is that it gives you the delusion that money can get you everything. Money can't. Unless you're a materialist.

It can make more happiness. Depends on the person and situation. But the reason he talks about poverty beign the norm is because the wealthy want you to be poor because then they can control you. This isn't new.
@harryfaber
@harryfaber 3 месяца назад
The 'poor' can only be controlled if they want to be 'less poor'. Take a walk around a supermarket, any supermarket, and look at the popular lines. They are all based on 'want' rather than 'need'. They are expensive for what they are. In western societies, 'poverty' tends to be measured with some very strange 'values', and the poverty tends not to be so much about 'money' as about education and making best use of resources. The 'system' likes people to want stuff that they do not need and through that 'media' control them. Add to that 'fear', all of the 'what ifs' that are used to sell insurance for everything, and the 'poor' will work overtime to pay for even more 'stuff' that they do not need. Genuine happiness can be found in the freedom of not wanting 'stuff' and in not rejecting all the 'free stuff'. Take three minutes to ask yourself the question 'why don't I eat stinging nettles?' Then take another 3 minutes to think about who would lose out if you do.
@jamesw4250
@jamesw4250 3 месяца назад
@harryfaber execpt there are people who focus on exclusively needs and are still poor and still barely surviving. And yet they are never able to improve. Throws a wrench into your narrative there. And your nettle question doesn't apply here. And is also quite frankly a dumb one.

@harryfaber
@harryfaber 3 месяца назад
@@jamesw4250 Do you have an answer to why you don't eat stinging nettles? Or maybe you do. Have you thought about who would lose something, anything, if you do eat stinging nettles. A question may be thought 'dumb' without the full discussion of why the question was framed. 'Poverty' is always an interesting and difficult subject. For many people, there is way too much 'emotion' attached to get in close to the core of the subject. We are privileged to live in countries where there is sufficient 'wealth' that if equally distributed, there would be no poverty. That said, if you give two people $100 each, it is almost always the case that one of them will make $100 last longer than the other. Throwing money at the problem is not always the answer. Education and 'philosophy' comes into play, understanding 'joy', recognising 'addiction', sometimes there needs to be 'wiser' law making. A lot of people who claim to be stuck in poverty traps, when asked, will complain about the prices of 'luxury' items. In a town near me, there is a supermarket that sells all the ingredients to make a pizza from scratch. They sell frozen pizza, 'artisanale' pizza and all of them come at different prices ranging from the 'that has to be rubbish if it is that cheap' to 'crikey, only a fraudster like Trump can afford that' expensive. Or, you can cross the road and buy pizza from a vending machine. That is a relatively expensive option. The man who grows his own tomatoes, who understands how to cook stinging nettles and which fungi are edible makes his own, better for his health, better for his wealth, lower 'carbon footprint', so better for the environment. The man who grows his own tomatoes and sees the joy in doing so often is also the man who does not feel a need to buy a TV, he probably does not feel a need to pay for 'gym membership' although is probably fitter than most folk who do. Have you ever noticed how many people who are described as poor smoke cigarettes? Jesus said 'the poor will always be with us' and history has shown that to be correct. What we do about that is a whole different matter. Currently, in both the UK and France, there are election campaigns, politicians of all shades are again talking about 'tackling poverty', once the votes have been counted, they will stop, and will be back to their normal habits of looking after their sponsors. Their sponsors do not like people eating stinging nettles, there is no profit in it for them. Incidentally, there is only about a three week window when they are nice to eat, older plants are too fibrous and while still edible, not so pleasant.

Respect for money, the power it can enable good or bad. Establishing a moral, spiritual and literal level of comfort will bring you more satisfaction and happiness. Earn enough wealth to bring you ability to live within your means. If you are blessed to build more wealth, you should give thanks to God to you being in that privileged position. From that you will do more good with your wealth, you will find it may bring you peace but do not look for love. Never love anything that cannot love you back. One could have millions of dollars yet still live beyond their means. The misery of such will be amplified. Be you poor, better off or wealthy, take a moment to thank God for another day. If you are poor, what can you do to improve your situation? Don't wait on others especially government to help you. Infact big government never wants you not being dependant on it and ultimately subservient to it. If you are better off, comfortable, then give thanks for such and live to stay in balance with life, wants, desires and with the Lord. If you are wealthy, pray to God to guide you to do right with your wealth. 🙏✝️🙏

A very good reading. If we receive Grace (we do!) but keep it for ourselves, we cannot find room for more grace, but if we let it flow to those who need it, we will get more. Not for 'ourselves' but for all. We teach 'from, through, to'. We receive Grace from God, it must flow through us to those who need it. I have just done watching Fr Larry Richards on his podcast, I think you would enjoy listening to him, have a look at 'Anchored in Hope EP 125.

I believe it is more accurate to say that "greed doesn't make you happy". We need money for our own well being. It is just a means to an end. Money is required because of how our society is structured. The way we get money is where we have some issues because it rewards greed. Many wealthy people use their wealth to grow their wealth further at the expense of others. We don't need socialism, but we need rules to reward wealth distribution and punish greed. For example, if you buy a house as an investment, then you should get increased taxes that compound the longer you hold onto the house. However, if you rent that house out below the competitive rate, then you get tax reductions on that house or some other benefit.

I agree with all this except for the claim that poverty is the default. First, poverty and wealth are subjective terms, so the claim is a bit empty. Consider the lilies and the birds... The scriptures are always true and if you don't work, poverty will come upon you, but God gave us all drives to make sure we do well. We feel pain that keeps us from things that harm us, humiliation so that we don't repeat social blunders, and hunger so that we don't fail to work: Proverbs 16:26 The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on. It is the perversions of man that prevent people around the world from their basic needs, this is why the USA became great and (subjectively speaking) wealthy: because we honored God with the way we governed ourselves. This is also the reason we are in decline, because our people have turned their back on God and allowed perverse leaders to allow corrupt monopolization on food, housing, and infrastructure such as Amazon's grip on shipping that has made most small companies go bankrupt or share most of their profits with Amazon. Every corruption, small or large takes us further away from the place where mothers stayed at home to make sure all their many children were well brought up, and a man's normal position was independent and not a servant/employee.

If our desire for wealth (and/or sex and power) is caused by the fact we are fallen, then it is sinful, innit? So according to the way Dr. Turek talks about other sinful impulses, we should combat that urge, shouldn't we? Then why does he endorse an economic system that incentivizes seeking money? That does not seem to make sense within his religious belief system at all.

Dave Ramsey has the best advice concerning money and wealth for the Christian and the atheist alike.

His advice seems to boil down to - Live BELOW your means - Don't eat out - Pay off your smallest debt first, then once that's done keep throwing the same amount of money at your next debt. Honestly it's not bad advice.

@@mattr.1887 Well I found it great advice concerning larger amounts of money too. As in pay off your mortgage instead of investing it elsewhere.

Well in my case no. I love my family. After losing my mom and several family members. Nothing seems to feel that void any more. I am stable and set. Financially I am good but that empty void is there. I pick up bad habits to try to drown it like drinking but nothing. I try to get new stuff and still empty. Dang I missed them. Specially my mom. I feel like this now. Ecclesiastes 1 1These are the words of the Teacher, King David’s son, who ruled in Jerusalem. Everything Is Meaningless 2“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” 3What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? 4Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. 5The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again. 6The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles. 7Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea. 8Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content.

Inflation is the reason why people want more money.

Frank is wrong in his comparison about wages 25 years ago and how you would be satisfied with the money that you receiving today. This is because he's not taking into consideration inflation. 25 years ago a family could have one income and buy a home, provide for a wife and children, have a car and also go on a week's holiday in the year. today you have MORE INCOME. but that won't even buy you a House, a car, a holiday. so although you have a greater wage, inflation has you in worst poverty than you would have been 25 years ago.

Work hard and you can also have the contentment that comes from doing the right thing. At the momemt that is easier said than done, but it's possible. If we in Australia had the freedom to rent and buy modestly and more jobs to employ us there would not be so much homelessness and poverty here right now. Our government has not protected us from overseas companies that have bought our land and houses, going on to sell them for a ridiculous percentage more than what they were bought for, and taking our jobs because the exchange rate means overseas workers are cheaper. Yet the greatest debt that was ever paid was the price of our greed and self centredness. And God Himself paid it with His own blood, the most valuable commodity in the universe. My treasure is in Heaven, and His Name is Jesus Christ. He is the only One who can keep us content even when the world around us is in turmoil.

The bible or any book cant tell us if money buys you happiness, we know it does everyday. You can buy almost anything you want that makes you happy with money. If you get a raise then you are happy. Millionaires want to stay millionaires and non millionaires want to be millionaires. Yes money buys you happiness.

@macman2141 How am I wrong? Why would we need the bible or any book to tell us if money buys happiness when we are the ones that knows what makes us happy? If it says money does buy happiness, it's right, but pointless because we already know that. If it says money doesn't buy happiness then it's wrong because there is stupidity overwhelming evidence that money does buy happiness.
