The Senior Leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been involved in misleading financial behaviour that has caused an SEC settlement of $5 Million. Is this grounds for Church Discipline?

While on my mission in the Philippines, I served as mission finance secretary. Poor money handling by the previous secretaries led to a missing $2,500 USD slush cash fund intended for small office transactions. During an annual audit, I managed to find what I hopefully assume were unrecorded transactions amounting to 2/3 the missing fund. I was required to write a formal statement to the First Presidency explaining I had lost the money. While nothing came of it, I was informed of the potential for excommunication on the bounds of stealing funds from the church. I expect the same transparency in reverse.

This information HAS to be shared far and wide. Church members are so busy taking care of their families and working and doing callings and preparing talks and cleaning chapels that they’ll never even know about it or won’t face the raw reality of what their leaders have done before dismissing it as an honest mistake! I’m so glad I don’t have to make excuses for church leaders anymore since I said adios last year!

Bye Felicia, Out of curiosity, do you actually believe humans see "reality" as what it actually is? I really believe we don't, we don't look at every single thing in our environments but we tend to have the thought we know what's around us. We didn't even look so we didn't see the environment itself so what do we see? Have you ever considered the world we see is actually a projection of our own thoughts, just seeing what we predict is there? I know that's off topic.

When I mentioned it to my very active LDS daughter she gave the typical response. She is happy the church is so financially secure and good with investments that 5 million is no big deal. I think for most active members lots of money just means the church is more true and God is blessing it. Kind of like the prosperity gospel that some televangelists teach. I watched one that was preaching that his listeners should sow a seed by helping him buy a private jet and God would multiply their blessings. The LDS church isnt the only church taking big advantage of being tax exempt.

Fraud?! Really? Is breaking an SEC filing rule to obsure finances the same thing a fraud? They paid the taxes owed and reported everything to the SEC. Usually the term fraud is used when you exploit for financial gain. The church did purposely obsure finances though. However in this situation I don't think it's worthy of church discipline. The question is why did they do it? Theres good reasons for doing this and bad reasons. A bad one would be to keep members ignorant so they keep paying tithing. A good one would be to protect members, bishops, and missionaries in 3rd world countries where kidnapping for ransom is a very real problem. I would do the same if I thought it would protect members of my church.
@NEMOTHEMORMON
@NEMOTHEMORMON Год назад
The first reason you state in your second paragraph as a bad reason is the explicit reason they have for hiding the money. Head of Ensign Peak Roger Clarke: “Paying tithing is more of a sense of commitment than it is the church needing the money,” Mr. Clarke said. “So they never wanted to be in a position where people felt like, you know, they shouldn’t make a contribution.”
@ARAZTXTN
@ARAZTXTN Год назад
@@NEMOTHEMORMON Yeah I know what he said in the NYT article. That's why I mentioned it as a bad reason. My point was to mention there are multiple reasons for obscuring church assets some of which are bad and good. The SEC only reported they the church did it to avoid "negative consequences". My hope is the church leadership comes out with more clarity around why they allowed it to happen.

@Patrick Morris "I'm a Mormon" was an advertising and outreach campaign by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2010 to 2018 that aimed to combat stereotypes and misconceptions about the church by featuring short profiles from church members (also known as Mormons). It looks like "Satan" had a fully-funded tithe-supported victory sanctioned by the prophet for 8 years. Oh ! I guess maybe he wasn't speaking as a prophet? Ya jus' never know when those prophet guys are doin' it on the payroll or off. Eight (8) years of programming the world to say "Mormon". They get evicted through no fault of their own, forced to live in their cars or go into homeless Shelters which are dangerous, filthy and lice ridden. Filled with criminals, and drugs, and often accosted by people in the shelters 3:33 . That $5 million " "settlement" could have helped a lot of those poor people. That being said, which one of the following would more likely do that: A) Someone who is guilty of fraud and working for the church and represents the church to the public. OR B) An inactive homosexual who gets married, doesn't have anything to do with the church, and who hasn't attended church in 10 years. But who is tracked down by missionaries, a bishop, etc. based on the Strengthening the Members Committee or some random person they meet who knows they're LDS and gay and contacts their local leaders. If they answer 1 in the affirmative, well... that'd be awfully damning. Oddly, it was actually the church's commercial holdings that was one of the final straws for me. I grew up outside Utah and had NO clue the church had such a massive portfolio. I happened to be in downtown Salt Lake on a Sunday during a trip there and had attended church downtown. Toward the end of the service I had a minor medical issue come up and desperately needed some supplies. The place where I was staying was a full hour and a half away and I couldn't wait that long. The member I was staying with said, "Oh, that's okay, there's a mall across the street!" They then proudly added, "It's even owned by the church!" Without even thinking, just going purely by instinct, I said, "Well, surely it's not open on the Sabbath..." The member, born and raised in Utah, gave me the weirdest look. She said, "Don't be silly, of course it's open. This is an 'Ox in the mire' situation, we've got to get it. Let's go!" All the way there I kept debating with her. Because according to doctrine, we not only have to keep the Sabbath ourselves, but *we aren't supposed to cause anyone else to break the Sabbath either!* Otherwise we're contributing to the fall of someone else. So here's the entire Church, investing OUR faithful tithes in a commercial building, where the Church itself is forcing employees to violate the Sabbath! Her response, "But they're not members!" That doesn't matter, according to their own flippin' doctrine. The whole thing was such an obvious tell to me, I was flabbergasted she couldn't see it. This otherwise smart, logical, clear-headed woman just refused to see the blatant hypocrisy. If I would fail a temple recommend interview by repeatedly violating the Sabbath AND causing others to do the same, then how can the church itself profit off forcing others to do the same at their own properties? Anyway. That's my soapbox rant for the day. :) Shame on them all.

When you're doing an act of service though you don't or shouldn't expect even a thank you. Do you know He wasn't grateful? Being compassionate means giving without receiving. I learned that in primary. I do things for people because it makes me feel good. Not to get anything in return. Especially doing it anonymously. It's like people are bating them by being kind when the only reason they do it is for a reaction. With that kind of thinking we don't deserve their gratitude. But this is the problem with UT members. They're self righteous, judgemental, nosey people. In any other state they're the kindest and most accepting people. They dedicate a large amount of their time to service because it makes them happy to do things for others. Please by no means is this directed towards you personally. If I seem to be rude I apologize. I was born and raised not just in the church but also in Provo UT. It's the worst here. I've not stepped foot in a ward house in 30 years. The church makes a lot of mistakes. Member's should be accountable for sure. It doesn't change the gospel though.

It is hard to pin blame here or there who is responsible ultimately for this and that. If you make a mistake take responsibility. The fine was paid. I don't know if we need to fully condemn leaders for the mistake, or discipline them. We aren't a pitchfork church. Your video is a call for the pitchforks. If we have issues we handle them in house, to save shame and embarrassment on those who make mistakes. A high profile Elder was excommunicated a few years back and not a word was spoken about it to let the person be spared pitchforks and public ridicule for their mistakes.

@@NEMOTHEMORMONAre you really though? I mean you're free to speak your beliefs. But consuming all the hate and bitterness is not healthy. Organized religion is not my thing but there are many great people there that are open minded. They're free just like you to believe what they want. Doesn't that contradict your point. Isn't still claiming to be a member just mocking them. Hating someone sucks the life out of people. You can hate them all you want. But with all due respect GET OVER YOURSELF! How do you benefit from this. Does it make you feel better as a person? Don't drag decent people in the mud that you know nothing about. It's hipocritical to hate them for the same thing you're doing. Every person's comment here who disagrees with you has been respectful and even offered to help you understand the things you talk about. Yet you don't reply with even a no thank you. What are you afraid to talk about with someone with a different opinion? That seems the norm for those who don't have all the facts or are misinformed. Kind of like all the Maga Trumpets out there. Do you like to be respected? I would think so. You have your reasons to dislike the church. Totally fair. But the people are decent human beings. Not all. But lots. Do you hate someone you meet who is LDS but you don't know that until sometime later? Or you just hate all of them. So can you really be happy with so much bitterness in your mind?You shout out your opinion pushing it into their faces but isn't that the same thing as you not liking others shoving religion in your face? I'm just respectfully trying to understand what point you're REALLY trying to get across. At the end of the day, your still going to believe what you did before. 🫤

No one is exempt of repentance when making bad choices, especially if they want eternal life. But heres the thing, if the people at the top are misusing the funds and don't repent and sort it out, that is between them and God its only their exaltation thats at stake, not mine. Our Father knows exactly what they are doing and through the spirit He can correct them. If they have become spiritually deaf, then He can take them back home or the spirit prison. We as members only need to worry about our own choices, and make sure we repent when needed. As I am responsible for my salvation not someone else's, especially that high in the church. If they don't know what right and wrong is at that level then they will be in serious trouble.
