Mufasa might MIGHT beat Sonic 3 in straight numbers, but I’m pretty confident Sonic 3 will turn a profit and Mufasa will lose the studio money. I’m not even sure if Mufasa will win though since people have largely abandoned the live action remakes, this is a story no one asked for, and The Marvels shows that past performance doesn’t predict future results.

I agree with you, despite the comments siding with Sonic - the anti lion king thoughts are mainly in the film fandom and not general audiences. It’s like Avatar, most people within our community are negative about it but the sequel still did great

Mufasa might make the most worldwide, but will break even at best (unless positive reviews and WOM along with better trailers and and any of the new songs in the movie from Lin-Manuel Miranda are catchy enough to breakout and get audiences to go back for it), whereas Sonic 3 will be the hit.

It depends. LA Lion King made a TON of money but a LA sequel about Mufasa paired with the recent Dinsey shortcomings makes it feel like a toss up. Not saying Sonic 3 will make a billion dollars but it'll be a closer race for sure

I think Mufasa's going to tank, for two reasons: 1.The trailer was ridiculously poorly received. The trailer for LK19 was much more well-received, causing people to see it, even if there was poor reception after. 2.Apart from Maleficent 2, the sequels to these remakes are always bombs. People are fascinated by these stories in live-action form, but once they experience that, they don't want to see anything further. And yes, I'm aware that I'm saying that as someone who loved LK19, but I think Mufasa's going to bomb and that nothing’s necessarily going to stop Sonic 3 from being a success.... I mean, I didn't hate Knuckles THAT much.😂

December 2024 is going to be an interesting month at the box office because we have The Lord of the Rings, Kraven the Hunter, Mufasa, and Sonic 3 are releasing in a two week period of time. It’s going to be intersting to see which one comes out on top. I also wouldn’t be surprised if one of them gets delayed or pushed forward a week or two.

I am totally seeing Sonic 3 first. I’m super pumped for this movie, and the “live action” Lion King didn’t do anything for me. Keanu Reeves is the perfect voice casting as Shadow. I was hoping Krysten Ritter would be playing Rouge but she’s not.

Sonic 3 will do better. Disney's reputation has come down with a slight case of nonexistence (Inside Out 2 alone won't save it), and last years failures are proof of that. What Iger had to say in regards to the strikes didn't help either. Like you said, people are starting to open their eyes to how stupid and lazy these remakes are. On top of that, Mufasa doesn't have the name recognition of James Earl Jones (the best they have is Seth Rogen), whereas Sonic 3 has James Marsden, Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves, and on top of that, the Sonic movies and video game films in general have been growing in popularity. Plus, the Sonic movies don't cost too much to make, whereas Mufasa is bound to cost so much. So even if Mufasa does make more than Sonic 3 (which I find to be rather unlikely), Sonic 3 could still gain the win if the profit margins are higher, which they are practically guaranteed to be. There's a lot of factors that have to be taken into consideration, but the bottom line is that Sonic 3 is bound to be the winner this Christmas. Especially when you take into consideration Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which releases a week prior. This is going to be a packed December, suffice to say.

The lion king made 1billion simply because of the brand and reputation attached to it and the novelty of seeing it in live action, now that people have seen it, it doesn't a very liked film at all. The sonic franchise is very popular and the third one is the big one. I dont see many people being that bothered about this muffassa prequel especially cos it's in live action again. The novelty of it being live action won't be as strong. Sonic 3 is a hugely anticipated film

Are you sure that The Lion King remake isn't really liked? It has pretty good ratings almost everywhere. 88% User Score on Rotten Tomatoes, Cinema Score A, Top Ratings on Amazon and so on. The worst I could find was on Metacritic with something in the 60 area which is still in the positive middle. Also let's be real here a bad movie doesn't gross that much like the remake did regardless of IP name. It didn't even had an Endgame or Force Awakens level hype and still grossed that much. I honestly think all the negativity on social media for this movie is a really loud minority

What makes people want to watch another live action lion king movie? That's like opening up an old cut that was healing. First 2 sonic movies were so much fun and you can bet I'll be there day 1 once it hits the big screen. Now would I like to see an origin story on mufasa? You bet your Hine I would...in animated form. Idk why they thought making it live action cgi would work again when clearly it didn't work the first time

You could also ask what makes people want to see a third live action Sonic movie. The truth is that there a lot of people who enjoyed the remake even if social media doesn't really give that feeling. However User ratings on multiple sites are showing - the remake did pretty good. Also I can't see what's so wrong about a Mufasa prequel while your hyping up Sonic 3 at the same time. But I still give you some reasons why people might be looking forward for Mufasa: - The Lion King is most likely Disney's most beloved franchise and like I said the remake did already better than you think - Barry Jenkins already proved to be a spectacular director so the movie is in good hands - Hans Zimmer returns for the orchestral score while there will be new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda - Really good cast. My favorite surprise was Mads Mikkelsen - Disney listened to criticism and improved on the emotions and tells a new story instead of remaking something - Scar is probably Disney's most beloved villain and we will also see his background story here - Fan Service stuff like Scar's real name being Taka and Kiara becoming part of the movie Enough reasons for you?

I'm honest here. The trailer for Mufasa looked really good and like it will be a fun adventure movie without any woke nonsense and Disney listening to criticism (more emotions and an original story). If all the dislikes are mostly only because it's live-action style (which is honestly absolutely no sign for the movie being bad and is exactly what Sonic 3 is doing btw) then I already see this one doing big numbers again. Also there are some really talented people like Barry Jenkins, Hans Zimmer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lebo M and Mads Mikkelsen working on this movie so that's already a good sign. I have to say I'm really hyped for Mufasa and so are my family and both my RL and online friends. And let's be real here the truth is that Sonic is way less known and unappealing to general audience than The Lion King which you can already see on the numbers The Lion King did and which Sonic did - a giant gap there. I mean even as a Sonic fan you have to admit that the thought of Sonic beating a Lion King product is just ridiculous. At the end it's not even important since both movies can still be great regardless of box office numbers

We have to keep in mind that both Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty (Maleficent) are IPs which are far away from being as popular as The Lion King is. So I don't know if we can really compare these two to the upcoming Mufasa movie since it's simply on another level. Also I think a big mistake the mentioned two sequels did was not including the IP's name in their title - something which Mufasa does so people will directly know that this is The Lion King we're talking about here.

As a Sonic fan, I honestly have to say: Mufasa wins this round. It was not a great financial success but still didn't flopped. And the only reason why it didn't grossed a billion again was because it was kinda forbidden in most asian countrys because of the race swap. Something which was pretty fatal because asian countrys tend to give a giant boost in box office numbers (The Lion King remake grossed 500 million in China alone for example). The most ironic part about that - the absolutely hated Little Mermaid Remake still grossed more than Sonic 2. So you see - your point doesn't say much. Especially since Mufasa isn't suffering from any race swapping or other woke nonsense

@@Vadigrie Yeah, I am 1 of those parents that brought their kids to see the movie. Like I said, it was a byproduct of my own nostalgia that I took them to see it, and fans didn't know any better. We have Disney+ and my kids have not re-watched it since, but they've seen Sonic 1 & 2 a dozen times. Disney has lost a lot of its goodwill from fans. We'll eventually see it, but I'm just going to pirate it after I cancel my annual Disney+ subscription.

I get the feeling Mufasa is going to suffer the same fate as the other sequels to live action Disney remakes like Alice Through The Looking Glass and Maleficent 2 by releasing a sequel 5 years too late were all the hype and momentum is gone, plus doesn’t help (helps for me though lol) is that lately the general public is now starting to have a distaste towards live action remakes.

In theory - I think the best thing about the ‘live action’ remakes of Disney films is that they can have theatrical sequels rather than just direct to video. Hard to say if this will live up to the potential of that but as someone who loves the Lion King and is pretty indifferent on Sonic, Mufasa is easily the one I’m rooting for.

Mufasa is not THE Lion King though. It’s a live action prequel/spinoff to The Lion King remake. I personally don’t see it making more than Sonic 3. I think Sonic 3 has a lot more going for it than Mufasa and there is a certain level of trust for these films and the studio behind Sonic.

It's obviously Mufasa. The lady one made one a billion and none of the sonic monies even cracked half a billion at the box office. I doubt they even made a profit. Not only that but both sonic movies and the knuckles show got mediocre reviews. The general audience will still watch Mufasa.
