no. they went to the phone first because mom went to the phone first. imagine a glow in the dark trail leading from the house to the tripoded phone then to the bush. they can "see" that trail with their noses. they both went to the phone because that is where the TRAIL to mom went first.

I feel like Sky knew immediately where mom was when he stepped out the door but was trying to figure out why mom would suddenly become a piece of bush... Kokoa on the other hand is just a serious and one-way minded dog who loves to use her nose well and figure things out as they go on. In terms of smartness, I give it to Sky. 😊

Kokoa got her scent and locked on to her position before even seeing her. Sky could have smelled her from the very beginning and didnt need to try.

These dogs will recognize a rock that moves its part of what let them avoid fanger and pick up on trails. My poodle barks at a branch that fell or a trash bag when my trash is too full haha

Their sense of smell is amazing. Notice they smell the ground and probably the direction the wind is blowing your scent is going straight into their nose and they know what direction you are in.

The camera set up also has their stench on it. That's why they go from the camera straight to her. It'd be even funnier if she set up the camera, ran way far right, went out one gate, around to another gate, then sat in place where the bush is. Maybe you'd see the dogs following her scent all over the yard. Lol. But if you make a straight line with your scent, it becomes far too easy for them.

@@kurosakiichigo7475 literally just do a 10s google search. This was a topic which came up for me while studing for a biology degree in university, different animals have different primary senses. For humans its eyes, for bats its ears, for different species of reptiles it can be taste, and for species of fish it can be touch/ electrical currents. For dogs its smell. Thats why we have historically used dogs to track other animals while hunting, we got the sight, they got the scent. Makes a pretty good team.

Dogs can practically “see” a scent trail in their minds. Mark Rober did a very interesting video which showed just how insane a dogs sense of smell is. They are smelling the tens of thousands of skin cells we constantly shed. I promise you that Krokoa new exactly where she was by her own ability. They can smell the difference between twins, even if they switch clothes to confuse the dog.

Doing search and rescue training, our dogs were SO confused by a gilly suit. They practically walked over the guy, and freaked out when they realized that THAT piece of foliage was a person 😅😂 They got used to it quickly and did very well identifying him, but the initial reactions were GOLD

@daveintheAM he didn't particularly try to hide his scent. It was an exercise to teach the dogs that people can be buried under foliage or might be actively hiding. A lot of people who get lost (and sometimes pass away by accident, or even people who walk off into the wilderness with the intention of never coming back) will take shelter in bushes or under piles of wood or grass. It teaches the dogs to focus on following the person's scent, rather than rely on their eyes. Dogs are enthusiastic sight hunters and will often almost walk right over the "victim" if they are camouflaged
