Met him at a rooftop club in manhattan at my friends table and we spoke for like 30 mins about the upcoming costa romero fight. Just how he talks - eager to be a nice dude is the impression i got esp if youre into mma.
I think people need to understand what a great fighter and talent Jake Shields is. He has earned his place amongst the toughest dudes to ever fight MMA.
I used to think Jake was an unentertaining fighter, but he was one of the best. I really respected him after his fight with Palhares. He even carried on with a fight shortly after his dad passed away. Big respect to Jake Shields!
Joe Rogan needs to go onto Mike Tyson Hotbox podcast with Joey Diaz, and they all take the stars and roast fat logs the entire time. That would be so good.
They need an age category not just weight. Under 40 is weight based fighting only. Then 40>50, 50>60 (Open weight). So the legends can still fight if they like but without being mauled by the new blood.
Exactly, his natural muscle memory from years of boxing was still there and in a way you could tell he’s been in the boxing gym and put rounds but he looked so lackadaisical and was almost throwing his punches like you said slowly and with no pop to them. The old school triathlete Nick was a fuckin machine
Nick legitimately performed as if he hadn’t sparred since his suspension, then once the fists started flying and his back hit the cage it all came flooding to him, but at the same time he still seemed like he didn’t want to be there in the first place.
Nick killed it all damn year and then sabotaged himself in the final weeks leading up the fight. Hope he can keep dialed in near the end of the camp this year
I feel like Jake got a raw deal with his career trajectory. He's one of the greatest grapplers to ever do it and at many points in ufc history could of been the champ if he had just been there. But thats just the way the cookie crumbles, I just hope that he isn't forgotten one day because he really helped push grappling further in MMA, especially BJJ based grappling.
Always thought Shields was a straight edge! Except for the failed drug test but he’s more surfer/closet gangster/stoner than I thought! Hell of a fighter and extremely underrated. Went the distance with GSP in his prime. Beat Henderson at Middleweight which is crazy to me. Beat Condit and Lawler Beat Woodley and Maia. He’s beat some legends and held a lot of belts!
I just want Nick to be happy and respected. If that means he never fights again, so be it. But if he wants to fight, im gonna be watching every time. Dude's my hero.
I was so pumped when I seen Joe had Jake Shields on his pod... until I started listening to it lol. I legit can't get past maybe 10 mins tops at a time before I have to shut it off, Jake's heavy breathing into the mic is just too much man lmao. So aggravating. This specific clip isn't all that bad but if you've listened to/tried to listen to the whole episode.. you know what I'm talking about lol.
Same it was sooooo bad! I had to stop listening 10 mins in lol I’m shocked about how little people are mentioning it in the comments it was seriously horrible lmao smh too bad I really wanted to listen. I was dying for Joe to tell him to sit back so at least when jake wasn’t talking it didn’t sound like someone gasping for air listening to Joe lol
He had neck injuries , his discs were injured prior to fight. He had neck surgery but hurt it again. His doctors said he shouldn't even walk with that injury. Cesar Gracie told this on Submission radio.
the paul daley fight was legendary. daley is probably the biggest puncher in welterweight history and nick went toe to toe got dropped twice. Nobody has done that with a puncher that big and got back up. It was Fury like
Yep ufc 137 October 2011 I own that walk out shirt I still to this day have never had such adrenaline and oh shit moments while watching a fight afterwards I went home and practiced the combo’s Nick through on my heavy bag I was 15 back then now I’m 26 crazy how fights age so well
Jake is a class act. Got to go to his house in Daly City once when his roommate graduated college. Real chill dude. His brother is also a riot. Funny guy and accomplished photographer. Great family.
Like many I became a fan because of Nick Diaz and like Joe said he truly had a huge part of changing the sport of MMA and the most insane part is he did it all while truly having no intentions to and genuinely hated the “sport” of MMA
lol, jake talking about one of the diaz bros and Joe is like, "dude, I got so high, also, remember when I used to do karate in the strip mall? i'm like you guys."
Only complete novice casuals say Nick looked bad against lawler his boxing combos were amazing and the volume was insane seeing how Nick rolled off the couch for that fight
Man seeing these 2 talking takes me back to the GSP v. Shields promo & Rogan is explaining who Shields is while "Remember The Name" is playing. Good times. Good times.
The guy is like 40 years old and has barely fought at all in the last 5+ years. Don't get me wrong, I got a lot of respect for Nick, but it's doubtful he could return to his previous form. The fight with Lawler looked like it was in slow motion.
