Add Kline over axle pipe and back box. Problem solved. If you want a bit more volume more overruns, add catted headers (I like my Fabspeeds). They also add 30 hp.
You need a rear muffler that mixes the banks, it’s transformational. The stock muffler doesn’t mix so creates that duelling 3 cylinder rasp. I have the Kline setup, it’s very liveable as the OAP’s are resonated. I had a 981 GT4 before, with the Kline on the 718 it sounds just as good.
Holy hell the pitch of that 981 is glorious. Love what Porsche is doing with the flat 6 in the 718 but the wail from the 981 in the upper revs is just insane.
Great comparison! Definitely enjoy the GT4 videos. IMO the 718 GT4 needs a cat back exhaust to match the 981. Personally, started with a Cargraphic valve controller and Akrapovič OAPs, then added a Soul Valved exhaust, as needed a bit more. The x-pipe really makes the car stand out on the high end. Love the sound overall, volume is great, not too much, but does add drone between 2-3k. If I had to start again would likely add a resonated OAP instead in order to reduce the drone, but there weren't many options 2 years ago.
Great video. About install my Flat 6 OAP on my 718 GTS 25th. Will have to see if it actually makes a difference. I will also install the BMC filters. Your 718 sounds better with the OAPs at high RPMs. I like the higher pitch sound. I personally don’t care for the burbles on the 981s. But the deeper sound at low to mid RPMs is still better sounding in the 981. Having said that the 4.0L has a much better intake sound inside the cabin. Thanks for putting this together.
The kline headers and muffler transform the sound of the 718. However, if you put sport or long tube headers on the 981, then you've created on of the best sounding flat 6 engines of all time. I have sport headers on my 981 with the factory PSE and it's just incredible.
Ed’s awesome. He installed his amazing seat protectors in my car , and is a great guy. I have a JCR valved / silenced exhaust and it sounds AMAZING but at the cost of a little resonance at 2-3k rpm. I love it though. Has the high pitch scream we all love.
Great video! I have a 718 GTS on order due this fall. Coming from a 5.0L Mustang with after market axle backs, the sound is my favorite thing. I really like how raw the 981 sounds. Have to admit from everything I’ve heard I am still a little underwhelmed by the 718 4.0 sounds, I’m not quite sold on this yet but agree it is a definite improvement.
Valve controller and BMC filters are mandatory, and relatively cheap on a 718. A backbox with a crossover/x-pipe would be the next level up on the 718 and unlock the 2nd half of the GT sound. imo it's not cost efficient to replace the OAP's in America compared to the other mods. Many folks are happy with aftermarket OAP's and the stock backbox, but as you can see in this video, even with a valve controller it doesn't get you there. The BMC filters provide the RS induction sound.
Porsche had a choice for the North American market. They just chose to not make a different over axle pipe for that market. I think they didn’t want to tick off the parts of the world where the monitored particulate filter is law by having the North American version of the car sounding significantly better
I have a 981 S w/PSE and BMC filters - I love how it sounds but I still think 981s, while VICIOUS, just sound a bit “rough” as compared to the smoother and more refined sound of the 718.
Check out Matt's gt4 from Obsessed Garage. He had Soul exhaust added to his and man that thing sounds AMAZING. So the 718 can absolutely sound great with a little TLC!
I test drove a 2016 Cayman S (PDK) with upgraded exhaust (believe it was P stock). Surprisingly good price at the local Porsche dealer, but after a drive, I suspect the excessive drone - even at a steady highway speeds (65-80) - was why it was priced so well. I ended up with a 2014 Cayman S (manual, all stock) and love it.
Awesome stuff, good comparison! I've got the OAPs on my 718 GT4, much happier with the sound in general since you can actually hear the exhaust. I do think the rear muffler from Kline or JCR seem to sound really good as a combo, x-pipe design needed for the higher pitch, seems close to GT3 just missing the last 1000 rpms.
Thank God. Finally an American video of this car! The Euros all come with opf filters on them which affects the exhaust tone. I never know for sure if it's been removed but I would guess not since it's illegal over there and would probably set off all kinds of warning lights!
The diffuser runs the entire length of the car and hence the 982 makes more downforce. It's one of the only true / real diffusers installed at the factory today.
Hey Danial, great video. When you mention that if the valves are kept open all the time with the track nanny, that there will be some drone effect around 2000-2200 rpm, Crazy Eddie stated that this drone could maybe damage the engine on the long run… did I understood that correctly? I’m asking because I was planning to install a valve controller and would love to hear your input on this. Thanks.
Valves forced open results in drone about 1800-3800 RPM. Ed was saying driving in too high of a gear “lugging” the engine can be hard on the engine. Not that drone is damaging. Sorry that was confusing. There’s no significant issues deriving with the valves open and droning but old school engine care says don’t go up a hill using a lot of throttle and really low RPM. This causes high manifold pressures. Is it terrible, no because Porsche wouldn’t allow the PDK (for example) to run like that if it was bad. Is it the best way to drive it? Not really.
Great video. Have a 2021 718 Spyder with Soul resonated OAP and valve controller. Little to no drone and much improved over OEM GPF pipe. Now I need to get over the injector noise. Thx for your posts after watching your brake bleed video I felt confident and did it on my Spyder.
