Will quail hatch their own eggs? That is a question I get asked quite frequently. The bottom line is, although they do go broody from time to time, it is rare and you shouldn't expect it to happen.

I had a quail hen that kept going brooding so I finally decided to mark her 7 eggs and leave her do her thing. Well she did hatch 3 of the 7 and was a good moma. I put her in a brooder box with her little chick and she done well. I would put mealworm in the box and she would call them to come and eat. She is back with the flock and had no desire to brood again. But that was very unusual and fun to watch her call her little babies to eat. Watch then get under neath her to get warm. I would stick my hand in their to feed than and she would peck at my hand and fuss

My quail just successfully hatched 10 out of 12 eggs. I only had 3 and it was like a team effort between them all. The main sitter, the friend who would sit to give her a break and the male standing guard. Was worried the chicks would be attacked by the others but no the the main sitter is a great mother. They are pretty much left alone apart from cleaning, food/water and have plenty of indoor and outdoor space. Think this helps but thought some people might like to know because it does happen and it's great to watch them.

i have a female quail who i made broody by putting her in a sawdust and straw lined cage on her own with one male. at first she just laid her eggs all over the floor, so i made a dip like a nest in one corner and then started placing her eggs into it instead of taking them when she laid them. Eventually she started laying in that one corner, and then getting interested and sitting on and turning them.. it seems to be triggering her nesting instincts .
@elegantrebel

a key factor seems to be keeping the breeding pair away from other birds that could disrupt the ''nest''
@loganlin6109
@loganlin6109 2 года назад
THIS is exactly what I was thinking of when I heard that coturnix quail don’t usually go broody in captivity, it seems like they just need a more natural setting to induce broodiness and quail are usually kept in very unnatural wire cages. On the other hand chickens that are allowed to brood their own eggs are usually kept outdoors in larger more natural enclosures on the dirt, or just allowed to free range. For example chickens who are raised specifically for eggs in large cage factories hardly ever go broody because of the very unnatural setting, so perhaps if quail are kept in a more natural setting with more natural sex ratios then actual natural brooding can be induced. Maybe if you give them the effect of tall grasses and some sort of nesting box and a large enclosure with a soil floor with one male and just one to three females then maybe they will go broody. I really would love to try to give the quail I raise for my own consumption some sort of natural setting cage with a little water hole and tall naturally growing grasses around, like a little quail terrarium! Oh also allowing them to have a dust bathing area would probably help to create the natural setting and cause broodiness.
@loganlin6109
@loganlin6109 2 года назад
@@elegantrebel this is interesting because in the wild quail usually live in pairs or alone I read, and occasionally in family groups where the original male and female lives with some of their children and grandchildren. So the unnatural social structure they are forced to live in in most captive settings could be the reason they don’t go broody🤔. Because Japanese quail were domesticated around the 1100s in japan and they didn’t have artificial egg incubators like we do now in Medieval times so they must have bred the coturnix quail naturally.

@@loganlin6109 Hi Logan. Greetings from Australia. I'm very interested in having quail but I don't like this incubator stuff and having them in those horrible wire cages. That seems so unnatural and cruel. I would fence off a piece of my garden where I have fruit trees and lovely soil and I was thinking of putting lots of sugarcane mulch in the corners for them to lay their eggs and there is a little shed they could go into as well if they wanted to at night or in wet weather. Do you think they would hatch naturally and is there a breed that is more likely to go broody. When our boys were little all our quails sat on and hatched their own eggs and looked after their chicks to adulthood. They lived in a cage that had a wooden floor. I would appreciate any advice. It depends on their setup more than just that they have had it bred out of them I think. People who have them in big spaces see them get broody more I think. Julie from DPH had it happen in her greenhouse. I took my broody hens eggs because I didnt want them to possibly go bad if they didnt sit on them like they were suppose to the whole time, however funny enough they took their babies back after and did well with them as moms. I had two that adopted all those babies. I probably could have gotten more to but the first broody mama I did this with she stuffed them in her feathers it was the cutest thing. I had supervised her at first saw her being nice with them but had to leave. I came back and freaked out "Where are the babies what did she do with them???" Then I saw a little face poke out. She stuffed or let them stuff themselves all in her feathers. She came to get some food when I was putting more in and they would fall behind lol. I will say I notice the difference from her generation with no mom to the next with her as mom. They were more polite so to speak. Her generation didnt move out of the way for food bowls etc they had to be moved out of the way to put them back in as babies. Hers would listen to her and move out of my way. They were less fearful too. Little differences. Not sure if she would have hatched them all out had I left the eggs with her but she was a wonderful mama. I took the rest of the hatched babies tested different females that showed signs of broodiness and two adopted the whole lot of them. I am definitely glad I got to try that. I dont want to get quail again until my greenhouse is finished though. I dont like the cage setups and had to overwinter the quail in them. To each their own always but for me their food is expensive and I dont like cages. I ate what we killed but to me they arent really "meat birds" more like meat is a biproduct when you have too many males. I prefer killing something that will make more meals. Though we can have chickens here so for us it makes more sense to raise them for meat. Quail make great pest control for a greenhouse though and it fits in with my no cage life. They are still contained but in a happier setting and have a shot at maybe going broody like before. I definitely saw a huge shift in personality between my mama raised quail and my quail I raised with no mama so I would like to see if I can get some to do their own hatching, if they dont at least I know out of potentially broody hens I could just give them some babies to raise after the fact and get my mama raised birds that way its not like it takes them long to grow up and it would be a long project lol. I think in the cage setting why its so rare is its a bit crowded to not get distracted by the other quail. When my girls had gone broody randomly in their pen they made nests in very secluded spaces. I guess its a possibility they may have hatched them too I just never gave them the chance. Many of my girls started showing signs but not until they were about maybe 5 months maybe a little less. It definitely wasnt for a month or two after they had become regular layers. Not sure what brought it on whether it was weather, juat having a place to hide them away from everyone but I wanted them to keep laying so I didnt spread the babies out among as many as I feel I could have I just kept taking the eggs. Its definitely worth the try if you have the space to so so. I wont do the pen again it gets too cold here and snowy to have a cover over the pen. I think with a greenhouse it could be heated a bit during the really bad weather and they could live year long in it so thats the goal. Also my daughter and I liked the eggs but the boyfriend and grandma did not lol. Mostly because they arent as easy to crack, so another reason for me that they have to be multipurpose here. Since meat isnt the goal it cant just be eggs, we get some knarly pests here during the spring and summer months though so pest control in the greenhouse would be great. I also noticed when the neighbors had tick issues we didnt. So even thoigh they were in a pen I think they did take out quite a bit when the ticks were unfortunate enough to cross their paths.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
Interesting idea. You may be on to something about the set up. I am sure they would be more likely to go broody in a large on ground area. I haven't tested to be sure but it makes logical sense.

@@Slightlyrednecked I wasnt really expecting it but curiousity lead to seeing what the little boogers could do. I really do love how the babies are when they have that maternal influence from their own kind. They still werent the smartest of birds of course but they were easier to handle than my other "free range" (as free range as a quail can be in captivity lol) birds. A skunk attacked (got itself stuck in my pen not realizing how to get out too) quite a bit of them and the others came in for the winter so I sold them. With ither things that had happened it was all too much. Definitely not doing it again until I have my greenhouse. Maybe not even this year though still raw about things from last year. The skunk atack, the fox attack on chickens I had for ages (easter eggers are cool but they fly, and without a roo they dont want to coop themselves up until they want to... I was made to get rid of my roo and they decided they didnt need to. The fox picked the easter eggers off. My fat "typical" breeds didnt fly over to begin with. I gave them to my friend), Listeriosis goat issue got my buddy the herd queen and although I was getting her better slowly the vet said he thougjt she had a brain worm.... Over the phone consulting.. said I needed to deworm her 3 days in a row (despite me saying she was dewormed one day already) which caused her to start siezing a bit the second day told me to keep going claiming its not the safeguard (even safe guard isnt safe in super high doses) and third day she had siezures after sizures. She was getting better being treated for listeriosis no siezing its a slow process to heal but before a vet she was doing better. Sucky thing I find out with goats is you have to train your vet because most dont have much experiencs with goats, well I was a newbie.... Even though my instincts were right I didnt trust them so I felt I needed to sell the other three who were fine. It was a bad year last year and I had some health problems which zapped me of energy so I felt a huge crash coming. We kept some rabbits which my daughter has been taking care of. My energy has been coming back but anyway still a bit raw to start over. Im sticking to what I have and the greenhouse project. Sometimes we have to admit to ourselves when we need to slow down. Quail are such an interesting bird though so they are definitely on my list for when Im ready again. They were with my bunnies last year and seemed to get along. They use to surround me like the creepy little compy dinosaurs on jurrassic park lol. They still werent like "Oooh pet me" but we could pick them up, pet them etc they werent taking off on us, heck trying to fix my flooring situation for the rabbits everyone was in the way expecting me to bring them more treats. They moved for the bowls, but not for me to get through the pen door lol. Rabbits too. I even have some videos on it. Not clean cut ones of course. When the weather was alright I had temp shelters but saw winter would be coming soon so my backup was the shed. Well now what we have is inside the house so I am lucky I cut down. I did a lot to my pen last year but wasnt satisfied with how little I could progress at a time. Id much rather be ready than scramble to get ready so Ill probably focus on setting everything up the next couple years. My goal for sure is no more inside my house. If push comes to shove the rabbits we have can be inside the greenhouse next winter. Im so irritated my daughter bred our rabbits but thats my fault because I let her be in charge of them for a bit until my health got better. We lost one set of babies to her touching them and mama peeing on the nest etc (I think they died of hypothermia? It had already set in by the time I found them in the morning). I saw the signs sooner with the second mama. Made a make shift baby bunny brooder nest lol sorta. Held her to feed them twice a day until they could see now shes got them back and they are doing well. Not like I was ready for more rabbits for sure but didnt want them to die without trying to help them. I really hope this year is better lol.

Broodiness depends on habitat. I started with 7 male and 13 female Coturnix quails. They were all incubated chicks too. My coop only had pigeons and quails. I was astonished when one of my A&M started a nest and laid her first egg. What was more amazing was when my pharaoh hen laid 10 and hatched them all out on her own (18 days). She did a fine job at rearing too. Everyone from backyard chickens to google and RU-vid said quails didn’t go broody. That was an understatement. My first year of quail raising was a success. I didn’t even need an incubator or a Batam hen. I had over 100 quails by the end of the year and they were all raised by coturnix hens. I can say from experience that this phenomenon wasn’t a rare site. I believe the reason quails don’t brood their chicks is based on habitat. I mean come on, why would they if they’re locked up in wire cages with little space? I let mine run around in a spacious environment. Maybe if quails were treated better, they would hatch their own chicks and raise them.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
I agree that habitat plays a huge role in whether or not they will go broody. But at the same time, it is still not that common and not that reliable of a way to expect to raise birds. I am glad to hear about your success but 100 birds by the end of the year isn't really that many. I generally hatch out close to 100 in each hatch. Not saying that you didn't have success, just that it isn't as many birds as I would like to get out of them in a season.

I thought about using silkies to hatch out quail eggs. I used to let them hatch out turkey eggs. I could only let them sit on 1 or 2 at a time. I normally only put one under them at a time. I would get around 10-15 baby turkeys a month doing this. Sometimes I’d stick Turkey eggs under my Muskovys to hatch as well. I don’t do any of that anymore but I’d like to start hatching out quail like this one day. I used to have a grow out pin that I kept a small flock of silkies and quail in. I let a silkie hen sit on some quail eggs and when they hatched I never saw them. All I saw was the nest and hatched eggs. I’m not sure if the chickens ate them, the other quail got them, rats got them or maybe they got trampled. I’m not sure what happened but they were gone. I never tried it again since it was just an experiment that didn’t work. Maybe I just needed to house them separately. Now I’m wanting to try it again.

hey buddy. can you raise different type of quail together in a more natural aviary setting. i have one that is about 6 feet by 5.5 ft and 6 feet tall. could your type of quail be raised with a Californian and/or button quail? if so how many different type of quail can coexistent. not looking for quantity more so looking to have a variety.

I am honestly not sure. I think that, as long as you give them plenty of room and don't crowd them, you should be able to get several different kinds together. I might be a little concerned with the button quail since they are so small but you would have to just try it and see. I really don't know how quail of different species interact with each other. Yes that has worked for me in the past. Get a bantam hen - they are smaller than regular chickens and will usually sit on quail eggs. Chickens can have personalities also though and I've heard of some bantam hens who won't even sit on quail eggs. But if you get a good broody bantam then that's my preference over an incubator. Another advantage is the hen then replaces the need of using a heating pad (never use a heat lamp, that's actually bad for chicks).

It is easier to buy hens for sure. But you might get better birds by buying eggs from a good breeder and hatching them yourself. If you have never hatched before I would suggest buying birds though and practicing until you get the hang of it and then buying eggs if you want to.

NO ... just no don’t do that. If she doesn’t attacks it she will crush it either suffocating it or breaking its legs and ribs in other words causing some fatal injuries by accident. Even the most caring birds will do including geese which are known to adopt or kidnap orphaned ducklings and goslings after mating season. So no don’t do it. I’ve seen cases with people claiming their female quails will let the chicks go under them but all such cases ended with the adults accidentally smooshing the chicks because because they don’t care about their presence and accidentally kept stepping on them. You can place chicks under broody quails during hatching day and she will care for them but only on the day she hatches her own eggs will she take in orphans and ONLY if she thinks they’re hers and not some orphans being place with her own.

@brandonnorthrop3624

Hi Brittany, I've had this issue myself, the first thing to keep in mind is that quail generally lay their first eggs at around the 6 week mark (for me it was the day of week 7, I think diet has a part in maturity rate, they were on chicken starter and then chicken layers pellets, always recommend unmedicated turkey starter or even turkey grower but not finisher and keep oyster shell grit available with decomposed granite) it could be that your quail are just coming into maturity and they may not begin laying until spring. The second thing to note is that the cold can and will stress them out and they need shelter from wind(any draughts at all really but keep air circulation) and rain/sleet/snow, you'll notice your quail trying to fluff themselves up and pull their head in close to the base of their neck like you would do when you get cold, trying to keep as much of yourself warm as possible, this costs energy for the birds and they will put more energy into keeping warm than producing eggs, perhaps a heat pad around the side of the enclosure or an infrared heat bulb (100W) would keep them cosy. Also it could be that the majority of your quail are actually roosters, a quick tip on coturnix quail sexing ( Chris has a great video on this subject) is that males will always have the tan-redish brown breast and females are speckled, I've noticed this in the golden Italian quail and the pharaohs and normal quail, the white quail and Texas A&M quail are harder to sex until you hear the iconic crowing of the males (quickly identify these ones at 6-8 weeks and band them, ring them or even use a marker on their feathers to identify them) eggs that freeze are non viable, generally a safe temperature to collect fertile eggs is around 55°f-60°f (for storage until incubation)
@brandonnorthrop3624
@brandonnorthrop3624 5 лет назад
However if they are collected after the hen just lays them, around 15 minutes would be a safe window I assume, then they should be just fine :)
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
Brandon gave some pretty good advice. I do think that Christmas lights would probably work but as far as hatching those eggs, if they sit in temps below 40 degrees for too long and definitely if they freeze they aren't going to be good for incubating. You may just have to wait until spring to incubate...unless you can somehow get the eggs fairly quickly after they are laid.
@scoa
@scoa Год назад
I've heard that if the initial quails you get are natural-born instead of incubated themselves, it'll make a big difference. Generations of incubated birds have been untrained to raise their own, but natural born ones still have the instinct.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked Год назад
I am honestly not sure if that is true or not. I think it really has more to do with their environment. If you keep them in large aviaries, they would have more of a chance of going broody and sitting on eggs than if kept in cages. But you may be right, the way they were hatched may have something to do with it too.

I noticed a couple weeks ago that one of the hens was laying almost all of the time on some eggs so I decided to let her keep doing it, there's about 10 eggs she's laying on. For whatever reason, my sweet wife decided to feed a couple of those eggs to our two Bantam hens, they love them, and she calls me crying and tells me that there were "little chickens" inside the eggs.. She wasn't raised around animals and she didn't believe me that they may actually hatch. My question is, when and if they hatch, will the hen quail/s take care of them? You can crack some open and look for a bulls eye ring in the yolk. A mature egg will have a white spot on the yolk but a fertile egg will have a ring around that white spot. It is faint but you should be able to see it. Honestly, if you have a rooster for every 4 to 5 hens and they are breeding (you hear crowing and have some feathers missing from the back of the females heads) you probably have fertile eggs.

If it is a wild quail it is probably illegal to cage it. And really not a great option. Wild birds tend to not do well in captivity and won't produce on a regular basis. Unless you have a rooster the eggs wouldn't be fertile when they do produce them anyway.

Slightly Rednecked - I’m worried about it’s well being and the safety of the chicks. Being nested in the goats pen is probable not the best place to have baby quail. I would prefer they mature then I can hunt them when they are adults, I don’t really care to raise quail anyway. They are great eating and fun to hunt. I will do my best to keep them safe and alive until they cane move out. I think there is another nest under a bunch of old junk that is going to the dump soon too. I hope they survive as well when I load up The junk for the dump. Thanks for the video and the good info.

it’s day 17 and my quail haven’t hatched yet can they hatch on day 18?

indeed. They can hatch all the way up to day 22. If they don't hatch by day 18 it may indicate that your incubator is running a little cool. You may want to get a few calibrated thermometers (make sure they are calibrated) and check it after this hatch is over.

I am hatching a Bobwhite Quail egg, and for the first 23 days, I forgot that I needed humidity. I looked at the egg with a flashlight, and the bird is still moving inside the egg. I added the right humidity that same day I remembered. Will my egg hatch?
