Great reaction Will! They sing in Norwegian (Nynorsk, which is spoken on the west coast of Norway), but the last part (acapella) is in Old Norse. This song amongst others from Wardruna and Einar Selvik (vocalist and songwriter) are played in the series “Vikings”. In one scene you can see Einar standing on shore singing “Helvegen” while the vikings sails off to England. “Helvegen” (path, road to Hel) In Norse mythology, Hel is an underground realm of the dead where it was believed that most people ended up when they died. In Norse cosmology, north is the direction towards cold and death. Therefore, it is understandable that Hel is cold and intractable, and that the road there leads "north and down". Hel is also the name of the ruler of the underworld. She is motherly and terrifying, and her skin is part blue-black like that of a corpse and part human-colored. She is very greedy and does not easily give up the dead who end up with her.

Aurora was already a Wardruna fan (she loves Norwegian folk music), so I'm sure she really enjoyed doing this with them (and vice versa). They (with Aurora) also did a very cool live performance of this outdoors near a cave. Only fan-recorded, but maybe something you want to check out on your own time. Kalandra is freaking awesome. If you haven't already recorded something of theirs, I'd recommend starting with Brave New World (Live at Kulturkirken Jakob). Their lead singer, Katrine Stenbekk, is often compared to Aurora, but she's awesome in her own right.

Nothing is better than this version, Einar's voice is so powerful and even though I am not a huge fan of Aurora, their voices match so well it's bordering on perfection. Mitt folks musikk.
As people have rightly said, Wardruna (meaning Secret Runes) is a band created by the singer Einar Selvik. The quote at the end is from the Havamal, a section of the poetic Edda. This is a song about death and passing. It tells of the soul going to Hel (Hel is the underworld of the regular dead in Norse mythology, the place of those not fallen in battle who go to Valhalla. So Vegen is the verb going and Hel the place name (which also happens to be the name of the goddess of the dead too).
i got to see them live about 2 years ago and it was amazing and felt so good to just be in the audience. There is something deep in the human body that Wardruna's music just calls to.
Congrats on reaching the gold at the end of the rainbow... (Now you can backtrack to wardruna's and kalandras stuff) Wardruna is the whole band, yes, led by the singer Einar Selvig. Amongst other things, they did actually make a lot of the film music for the "Vikings" series. Btw: the song is actually not Old Norse, but a somewhat archaic version of modern Norwegian - any Norwegian can understand it with a little concentration. The verse/poem (stanzas) at the end are however in old norse; think they are from the Edda (9th century).

Wardruna is the group. And they are at the forefront of the European Folk-Tribal music genre. You should def check them out in a reaction or just in your own time. Another great band in this genre to check out is Heilung - they are my favorite! Again, check them out in your own time if you can't in a reaction - they're too great to miss! I feel connected to my ancient ancestors every time I listen to them. Heilung (which means Healing in German) base their music on ancient Germanic peoples of the Iron and Viking ages. They're often referred to as "amplified history." Well, its not old norse -Its in what is called new Norwegian ( a reconstruction of Norwegian after the Danish’s occupation for 400 years) - in the end you can hear a part of Håvamål - who means speak from the Highest- meaning Odin) actually he had to scare half of the dead with Frøya ( Freya) - but she vanished after christianity tok over. Her place was not Vallhall but Folkheim. A lot off wrongs in “ Hollywood “ version of old norse mythology
