Patrice was a childhood piano prodigy and was an accomplished jazz artist before branching out into disco and r&b. She also wrote, produced and played multiple instruments on all of her songs. She's still alive and working as a musical director and film composer. Another similarly talented woman to check out is Angela Winbush (Angel, Your Smile, I'll be Good)

Yes indeed, Will Smith sampled this for "Men In Black". First, it's PATRICE, not PATRICIA. She's a jazz pianist who put out a lot of solo albums before crossing over in 1982 with this hit. This was her only song to hit the Billboard Top 40, but she had several other R&B hits, including "Haven't You Heard", "Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)", and "Watch Out". P.S. You make this look GOOD. ;) Bit o' trivia - the sax player's name is Gerald Albright, who worked with talented artists as diverse as The Temptations, Anita Baker, and Olivia Newton John. He's also toured with Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, and Teena Marie.

When Gerald Albright's debut album came out I bought it just based on seeing his name on all Patrice's albums, before I'd even heard anything from it. Six months later when radio was playing his version of "So Amazing," my friends were telling me to pick up the album. I bragged, "Oh, I got that six months ago..."

You should’ve been in the clubs in the summer of 82 when this song was released! You would’ve thought a revolution was going off a song with a clap and a bass line like that. Clubs were playing it twice a night because the floor was so packed. You either ran and got a spot, or you didn’t get on it

Patrice Rushen was a dancer on "Soul Train" in the very early seasons when she was a teenager. She had an afro then. Her 1st couple of albums were mostly instrumental jazz where she played piano & keyboards. Some other recomendations for female Friday are Phyllis Hyman, Bobbi Humphrey, Millie Jackson, Alice Coltrane, La India, Honey Cone, Minnie Riperton, Syreeta, Abbey Lincoln, Chanté Moore, Shanice Wilson, Klymaxx, Exposé, Betty Wright, Brand New Heavies feat. N'Dea Davenport, Sade, Swing Out Sister, Basia, Stacy Lattisaw, Joyce Moreno, Celia Cruz, Deniece Williams, Teena Marie, The Jets, A Taste Of Honey, Angela Bofill, Roberta Flack, Stephanie Mills, Natalie Cole, Dionne Warwick, The Jones Girls, 5 Star, Manhattan Transfer, Ashford & Simpson, Atlantic Starr, Loose Ends, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Charo (playing guitar), Laura Nyro, & the original 4 member lineup of The Pointer Sisters.

I believe George Michael also sampled this for his song "Fastlove". I think his sample of it was more subtle than Will Smith's. Fastlove was also the song that Adele sang (had to restart cause she thought she stumbled) at the 2017 Grammys as a tribute to George Michael after his passing in December 2016. She reworked the song from a dance track to more of a somber song. You both should check out Fastlove when you get a chance.

Thanks for this reaction! More Patrice songs you would enjoy are "Remind Me", "Feels So Real", & "Haven't You Heard". Her jazz instrumental "Number One" is another side, The real side to Patrice. She is a gifted jazz artist first. "Remind Me" is just wonderful jazz and R&B with vocals and she does wonderful with the Keyboard. Remind Me is just beautiful and smooth. A Quiet Storm hit.

I love Patrice Rushen! She’s my favorite female Jazz musician and she’s underrated. One of the first songs that I heard in the radio by her was Haven’t You Heard. I was hooked after that. I listen to Patrice practically everyday!

Not only did Will Smith sample it, so did George Michael on his song "Fast Love"

The newer artists always sample the old school artists because it's real, genuine, classic music. So good, that they simply must sample it!

This song was Patrice, not Patricia, Rushen's biggest r&b crossover hit ever, Jay and Amber!!! The song peaked at the #2 spot on the Billboard Dance chart. On the Billboard Soul chart, it peaked at the #4 spot. And on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song peaked at the #23 spot around the summer of 1982. The original version of this song is a banger indeed!!! Will Smith's cover version from 1997 was also a banger too. By the way, this song was Patrice Rushen's one and only Top 40 crossover hit on the Billboard charts. One more thing about this song. The man who is playing the sax solo on this song is future smooth jazz artist, Gerald Albright.

You should also react to Mtume "Juicy Fruit" which is another 80s classic that's been sampled a lot.

Another fun fact, Prince had a crush on her and he wrote his hit "I wanna be your lover" for her to sing. Apparently, she heard his vocals and convinced him to do it, giving Prince his first Billboard charted hit song in 1979.

This song reminds me vividly of my 17th birthday and getting ready to go to the theater with my mother. For my birthday, we went to see the musical The King and I, which was touring with Yul Brynner, who starred in the movie version of the musical. It was a really magical night in 1982! Sadly, Yul died in 1985, but he was still an incredible performer when he was touring in 1982. Thank you for that memory!

YESSSS....love this song so much!! I use to roller skate my ass off to this song. Also, her name is Patrice not Patricia. Such a great vibe! Thanks for this one ♥️ Oh, and the chorus was a big dance trend on Tik Tok.

I thought it was Patrice. Patricia did not sound right. What are the odds these two will read comments and correct it? They continue to leave up songs that are by cover artists instead of the original ones.

Mr. "Ready" Freddie Washington on his Fender P Bass, strung with round wound strings. He was one of pioneers of funk bass, hammering and poppin. Larry Graham got it rolling, but Freddie was great, and had fantastic tone. Freddie wrote this song too. He wrote a lot of great songs for Anita Baker, Whitney Houston and many others. This has to be one of my favorite old school funk lines to play. Patrice has a wonderful voice and was an incredible pianist. Some of her jazz work will floor you. Just a great combination of talents here.
