Will Sony Shorten The PS5 Life-Cycle? 

The new consoles life-cycles are shorter than game production-cycles.

I hope it goes to 2028. The generation doesn't even feel like it has started

Forget buying the PS6 until a few years after release, they'll still support the PS5 for a long while.

I think that they'll probably EXTEND the PS5 cycle, specially considering that PS4 already had most of its games coming out in the last 3 years of it's life cycle, if in the PS5 cycle those games are going to take even longer I don't see why they would shorten instead of extending the generation to at least 2028. And PS5 Pro has not even been announced yet, and I don't think they'll release a mid-gen console and shorten the generation right after

I’ll buy a PS5 when I see a proper games library for it. Until then, the PS4 I bought in 2014 will do me fine.

I'm guessing what they should do is increase the console life cicles, compare PS3 first games with the latest games. Examples: Resistance Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword (2006 and 2007) with The Last of Us and Puppeteer (both 2013) I don't need a PS5 Pro or a PS6, i need games.

I’m surprised by my general apathy towards an industry I used to consume so much from. The games are half baked, the consoles don’t even have enough of a fidelity jump to get me excited and I don’t see a change any time soon. Like does a PS6 even matter when the 4 is still a huge chunk of the current user base?

We had 3 uncharted games and the last of us in the ps3 generation, while not a single new Naughty dog game half way thought the ps5 cycle.

Console generations are too short. Switch at 8 years feels about right.

I think Sony's gonna be perfectly fine going to 2028 with the PS5. Why cut short the gen if you're winning it? People also don't realize that saying we're at the halfway point of the gen implies 2027 at earliest, and 2028 just stretches a winning gen out a bit further.

Why do people keep saying stuff like "PS6 is coming soon", what do they expect that console to do different than the PS5 to help Sony's stagnating sales and game lineup 😂? There's absolutely nothing wrong with the PS5 architecturally, it just lacks games, thats something a PS6 won't magically solve, quite the opposite, it will make game development even more expensive and strain the industry even more. PS5 is going to be Sony's main console well untill 2030 at least.

I think it would be a mistake to do so: MS is at an _all-time low_ in terms of popularity and perceived "brand value", thanks to their constant fumbling. Many people are also still on PS4 and many others feel like this generation has barely started. Considering the *PS5 Pro* is still on its way out this holiday season and Sony's consumer base feels like even the standard PS5 hasn't seen its juice be fully utilized, *Sony can afford to let MS do the first move and initial investment effort in marketing.* Ideally, Sony will hold on to its existing consumer base for a good long while (while promoting the PS5 Pro); _raise the hype bar_ for their upcoming *PS6* hardware AND spread rumors about how *revolutionary* it will be; and then comfortably launch a stronger product than the _"Series X 2",_ 1.5 years down the line (hopefully with a strong launch lineup as well). Ultimately, let us also not forget how the public is very nostalgic for -- and actually WANTS -- a huge generational leap, that feels tangible. It's another argument in favor of Sony NOT taking the first step. Heck, I feel like they could wait 2 years even, after the "Series X 2", to deploy the PS6. They just need to have a strong marketing team and PR, and hold their audience and consumer base with the promise of a capital-R revolution (a revolution which, btw, can literally really happen, if AI for game development fully takes off, and helps a stagnated industry actually DEVELOP MORE GAMES cheaper and faster, which is our current biggest problem now) Sony managed to hold the line when the Dreamcast came, and they should do the same thing again now. The timing is right I think. Let MS do the first move. It has worked before, and it will work again.

PS1: 1994 PS2:2000 (had games coming out all the way to like 2009) PS3:2006 (games died out rather quickly after ps4) PS4:2013 (still getting games) PS5:2020 Sony will only change this if Xbox changes nothing else will

When the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S were being developed and contracts were being signed for their manufacturing, GPU manufacturers weren't targeting the AI / big data market as aggressively as they are now, so I think it's difficult to say how that might affect console release windows and even console specs.

they should extend it, not shorten it. except for insomniac, none of their AAA studio have release a ps5 exclusive yet.

Always consider that the covid 2020-2022 years affected its life. 2023 feels like its their Year 1.

Diminishing returns for tech upgrades, diminishing returns for bleeding edge graphics, diminishing returns for half-decade development cycles, inability to die-shrink and cost reduce these consoles, HALF of PS gamers STILL on PS4 after 4 years, i don't see the advantage of a PS6 / Xbox Series 720-X for quite a few years down the line....

Sony thinking the PS5's best selling years are behind them is such pessimistic, defeatist thinking. There hasn't been a killer app on PS5 yet.

Still waiting for the first “next gen” game

One thing I am finding very poor is that on PS5 they haven't yet updated the machine to do something the PS4 could do and helped me being partially deaf for accessibility. Me and my mrs used to be able to watch movies or shows and chat with plugging in a wired headset to a controller each and being able to voice chat on the same machine. I wish the PS5 could do this. It neant I could hear the show better and her.

We haven't seen a new Naughty dog game, because the WASTED their time with that multiplayer thing. Make no mistake, Jim Ryan is to blame for a lot of these boneheaded decisions.

All-encompassing, this is BY FAR the worst Playstation generation to date. I demand a refund. Bury it and make things better next time around.

Why does everybody seems to forget it was almost impossible to get a PS5 for the first 2 years?

If game are gonna take 7 years to make then consoles generations need to start lasting longer as well

I'm almost done with gaming. Well modern gaming. Going back to the classic consoles and older PC games. My backlog is HUGE.

They should just extend it, really squeeze out all the potential of these consoles. Then come out the ringer with 1080p 240hz consoles and actual 4K 60 with optional RT for the next consoles. 8k imo is kinda useless until the price of the tvs that support it go down

The problem with having a pro is that it takes away hype from the next console. The next console should have crazy next gen exclusives or people will just hold onto there ps5 or ps5 pro instead of buying a ps6. I have a series x. I don't really see the point of having another console unless I absolutely need it for the hottest game. Otherwise I'll wait longer. Especially if there will be crossgen games. Don't be surprised when gta 6 comes out and people are still hyped for current gen.

I can see PS5 lasting till 2028, however I get the feeling Xbox is keen to cut this generation short and release their new console at the end of 2026. There's a reason why Sarah Bond has mentioned the next generation twice now, first time during that Xbox podcast and then their showcase. There would be no reason to mention the next gen If it was coming in 2028.

I know this is a tech based channel but right now there is nothing that isn't taking you a decade of production that isn't capable of being displayed on the current gen of hardware. At this point we are just financing developer shortcuts, if ToTK can run on a toaster surely we can squeeze more out of these boxes.

We need longer life cycles, not shorter one's.

I dont feel I have had value for money from this gen yet, all we seem to get is remastered versions of older games, where is the innovation. It feels like the stronger the hardware the weaker the software because of the resources needed to create games to the consols capability.

5:00 by end of console generation, do you mean, Android phone-esque, e.g., Samsgun Galxy S1, S2., S24 etc., a new iteration every year or two years? Everything still works, but at some point, the S1 can no longe rurn S24 items.

PS5 and XSX are HUGE consoles that have not really been used to their utmost. We've seen the ceiling and the struggle. The way consoles are developed need to change. Their next consoles CANNOT be the same thing but stronger. It's not feasible.

The problem isn’t long or short life cycles for consoles, it’s the insane about of time it takes to make these AAA games. This gen has been terrible because they’re obsssed with life like graphics that costs 200 million to make. We need to pull back on scope of games

ps6 should be released at end of 2028 or something we still havent seen much on ps5 machine

I think PS6 will be a digital only console with an optional disc drive sold separately. They'll try to lock you in to their ecosystem like this and it will cut production costs and make more space for hardware.

I just got a PS5 a few weeks ago and they're still technically releasing PS4 games. If they start cutting console life cycles short then I'm out.

As a PS5 owner since 2021, it is an underwhelming console even despite me never owning a PS4. Since I have a PC. But I know I've gotten more use out of my PS5 than others.

Not sure about this since Sony just announced they are bringing Ps3 titles to the system. In order to announce a new system they would need it to be a fair selling price plus full backwards compatibility. Just my guess

3:47 Alex doesn't even want to say the words "PS5 Pro"... because IT DOESN'T EXIST! It's not coming out. Sony is already hard at work on the PS6. Why would they pull a Sega, and release a "32X" into the mix. (And, by that I mean, why release a .5 upgrade, instead of waiting a couple more years and releasing a full on generational leap?).

I also feel that no one is seriously evaluating video games as a medium and how can we expect new or groundbreaking experiences out of a controller with buttons and sticks and gyro. It seems like adding more and more realistic graphics only results in longer and longer dev cycles and more complicated control schemes from those same button layouts but doesn’t fundamentally evolve the medium itself. VR and AR haven’t really caught on beyond niche audiences. Maybe the medium itself has reached its apex and something else entirely will come to supersede it.

I honestly can't think of a way to put my feelings into words. On the one hand, I understand hardware eventually needs an upgrade so that developers can create new experiences. On the other, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S feel like they have just started to finally get games that utilize their hardware properly. 2028 seems reasonable for an upgrade, but I could honestly see the PS5 going until 2030 or maybe a bit longer. There is no true reason to upgrade the device yet.

They're still releasing a ton of games for PS4 and even some games ONLY for PS4 (Marvel Vs Capcom Collection) over 10 years after the release of PS4, and these dudes are talking about PS5's lifespan being cut short.

How about a console release whereby you buy a game, put it into the console and play it straight away. Minimum loading and offline with no connection to internet required, gamewise or console wise? That would do it for me. Ok, you can have online stuff as an option, but not a requirement. Gap in the market, not quite being filled by Evercade (Yet). No new stuff

People seem to be forgetting its all about the games not the next console

6-7 years is basically the length of console generations for years now. Every Playstation console launch has been 6 or 7 years apart. I think Nintendo would've liked to have launched a Switch 2 maybe a year earlier, but you have to wait for hardware to have advanced enough to make it worth a new console generation. With handhelds its almost more difficult because you don't realistically have the option of just cranking up the power consumption 50% in order to get enough power to make the next generation worth it. So you really have to wait for tech advancements that allow you to make it good enough with relatively the same power consumption.

Sony needs to drop the PS4 dual releases and go 10 toes down on the PS5.

They should definitely extend its life because we all kind of missed out when no one could get a PS5 for about 2 years into the pandemic because of stock shortage and scalpers. And I feel that from now developers need one or two more games worth of research into the PS5 as well as new technologies like Unreal Engine 5 to really see what this gen of hardware and game engines are capable of.

I think game development time needs to shorten but not in quality. Rather gameplay time. They should shorten the games time to 20-30 hours with average 10-15 hours. Making a game that is suppose to be played for 80-200 hours is just ridiculous push. Sure there can always be outliers but games should be in my opinion 10-15 hours long with longer types 20-30 hours with possible expansion pack down the line if deemed necessary.

I feel like we barely tapped into the PS5's full potential. It feels like a wasted generation.

I mean, one of the thing to does annoy me at this generation is that despite we could be reaching about eight years old when we’ll probably get NexGen hardware I feel like they’re gonna support the PS five way longer than that because looking what’s happening with the PlayStation 4 for lastgen a lot of companies are still making games for that console and we’re just starting to see like games no longer support last gen during the half of it’s current generation cycle so I think current gen will probably be here for awhile before we see next gen consoles like the ps6

It needs to be at least 12-14 years at least a decade minimum , until new hardware is absolutely needed, the development time and cost is becoming ridicules along with the gameplay.

No, it'll likely be seven years. and there will be NO PS5 Pro, as I've been saying for months now, with a lot of pushback from people! :P The only reason there was ever a PS4 Pro was simply... 4K media, as everyone called it, the "PS4K". Mid gen refreshes make no sense. Not to gamers, and definitely not to developers. Third party hardly supported the Pro.

We're still in the PS4 & XboxOne era. PS4 to PS4 Pro to PS4Five with some PS4Five exclusives. Likewise: XboxOne to XboxOneX to XboxOneSeriesS to XboxOneSeriesX with some exclusives. Soon to come: PS4Five Pro.

This generation of consoles has very few nextgen games that take advantage of its potential and new technologies. Few games per year from third party, thus, they will sell less each generation companies and no exclusives either.

Considering the PS4 and Xbox One were well supported into this generation, I think you could say it lasted longer than 7 years. I still see people complaining that the PS4 is receiving on going support with plenty of PS4/PS5 releases, even from Sony. That gets some people really angry.

They've barely started this life cycle. It's all remasters of last generation. It's like the PS4.5 and I'm pretty disappointed with their direction.

PS5 will be 4 years this coming november and still they be announcing cross-gen games. So infuriating!

Sonys really screwed this generation. They aren't making much money off of the current gen but they can't push a future gen either.

The important thing is that a useless PS5 Pro will not be released. We want games, not money-sucking rubbish mid-gen consoles

Im still on PS4 pro, Ive only played Demon Souls and Stellar Blade on ps5 by streaming my bros PS5 on my PS4. There are simply not enough new games (or ones that Im interested in) on the platform for me to just justify buying one and some games that I am interested in are still coming out on PS4.

I know they are talking in general about PS6, but at the beginning they talk about the next console generation, starting in like 2028. But just by definition, it kinda starts next year with Switch 2. Switch 2 will not have the power of PS6/Xbox(?), but it will be the start of that next generation of consoles.

I'm a PC gamers, but to those with PS5s: look at how long it took them to leave the PS4 behind, and how many actual PS5 exclusives (or timed exclusives) you got so far. Don't rush to buy the PS6.

The PS5 hardware hasn’t even been tested to its full potential with respect to first-party AAA. Only one such release almost 4 years in? Second half of this gen should be stacked then, right? Sony should just skip the Pro and release about six PS5 AAA first party titles 2025 through 2028 and then release the PS6 holiday 2028 without cross gen first party titles.

I feel like the PS5 Pro is going to be called the PS5 Edge; kind of like the Dual Sense _Edge_ . I do hope that PS keeps the PS5 going. It makes no sense to keep reiterating a new console x amount of years. Xbox ... I honestly think they're gonna go the way go Sega and become a publisher/developer only. They've been pushing very hard for Game Pass and more and more games from studios they bought are getting released elsewhere.

You know, the PS4 Pro came out 3 years after the PS4 was released and we weren't saying the console was at the end of its life cycle. Actually we had 4 years since it's release until the PS5. The PS5 pro is releasing 4 years after the launch of the PS5. We should get another 3-4 years out of it.

I will not buy a PS6.. the PS5 has not been worth it, it has had very few games that utilize the hardware..

If Sony switches up hardware anytime soon, I'm going to jump to p.c, they have barely done shit with the PS5. If Sony goes and drops new hardware before releasing a decent library on the current gen, I will have lost all trust in the brand. I think a premature release of hardware would be the end of the game counsel.

I hope they find a way to rid the earth of scalpers first whatever they do.

They need to stop obsessing over insane fidelity. Just make games with decent polished graphics, stylised with good physics that run well. This way, we can have more regular releases of content rich games that come in a full complete package, because all the Dev resources won't go in to making the highest graphical fidelity possible. It's so dumb making games for every generation that are too ambitious for the hardware and take too long. If they just make games that the hardware will swallow with ease, everyone would be happier because we'd be getting more releases.

What Sony needs to do is make attachments to the PS5 and PS5 slim that can be attached to the PS5 Pro. And turn apps into physical products with their partners, like Google, Apple, Meta and Microsoft.

Console cycles are way too dang long! It's one of the reasons I switched to PC. Should be 5-6 years and then put out a new one. The PS5 will be far behind in performance by the end of this year when it comes to gaming tech.

I think it’s competition that will force both Microsoft and Sony to release a new console early if they do. I think they both want to extend the life of current gen. So many still on last gen as we’ve seen from you guys.

Naughty Dog haven’t released a brand new game since 2020, meanwhile Insomniac have already released a new Ratchet and Clank and Spider-Man game since this gen started

If they do come out with a new console, I don't think I'd buy it in a haste. This gen just hasn't got going for Sony - think I'm not going to be a day one buyer anymore.

Each console needs a specific look and feel. Not the exterior, but the actual way games are made/game engine. Sony and Xbox have become pc's and have lost any sense of uniqueness and people just are not excited anymore. Maybe tech has got to a point where innovation doesn't exist, but if Sony and Xbox make another PC that just has higher resolution/raytracing, I feel like we are doomed. Maybe stick to 2560 res and amp up texture memory beyond what is needed so that all of the focus becomes art and fx. Can't see a need for an 8k ps6.

Releasing a PS6 soon will hurt them. It won’t sell great, i guarantee it. It would be a mess for everyone and everything.

LUV Sony but as a casual gamer console prices are a joke. I bought a series s for 120 dollars on Facebook.

Sony needs to take advantage of the future-proof I/O and new DS5 controller by starting a new PlayStation naming convention for future consoles. All consoles PS5 and newer would exist in this new PlayStation universe where all PlayStation games work on all PlayStation hardware (just like PC games work on PCs). People could upgrade to a newer console, sell their old console to somebody else and both consoles would be able to run any PlayStation game. Studios would fine tune games to work on each new console and no one would ever have to buy a newer PS console to play a newer PS game. All DS controllers would be backward compatible with all PS consoles and the PS user base would only grow with time as opposed to being reset and having to regrow with each new console.

Sony are struggling to make anything at all at the moment. They don’t even engage with their player base anymore. If they go fully digital I’ll just stop buying their consoles and just stick with my PC.
