The new Star Wars movie is slated to come out in May 2026. There are big hope and need for Disney that Star Wars succeeds. There are approaches that Lucas Film has taken that some people might agree with and others don’t. The Director of the new Rey Skywalker film Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy says that she will be the first female crafting a Star Wars story. A lot of people have embraced the comments and a lot of people have pushed back on the comments. How should LucasFilm approach the new movie? Should they stay the course and do exactly what they’re doing or should they change their marketing strategy? Also, speaking of Star Wars, a fan made a Clone Wars style animation of the battle of heroes from revenge of the Sith. We give our thoughts on what we thought. Here's the problem I have with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy: She's an activist first and a film maker second. Also, she's really a documentary film maker more than anything else. For films, she's done 4 animated films and the only live action work she's done was 2 episodes of Ms. Marvel. I'm sorry that's not the resume of a director who should be making her Big Screen directorial debut with a massive property like Star Wars. Especially with this movie which MUST knock it out of the park or this franchise could be sunk again. If they are so adamant about a female directing this movie, how about Kathryn Bigelow? How about Patty Jenkins? You know, proven film makers. But no, they chose someone with Agenda first mentality. This has crash and burn written all over it.

I could not agree more. On the basis of her resume, she is the kind of choice that Disney should not risk right now. They need proven, sure handed blockbuster directors. If they are deadset on a female director, why not go for someone like Gina Prince Bythewood (who directed The Old Guard and The Woman King), for instance. On the face of it, this choice (one of the many that have occurred under Kennedy's watch) feels like it will be another mistake.

It’s obvious Kennedy is only looking for gun for hires rather than people who are passionate about Star Wars, this is why the Obi Wan show was written the way it was. Quite frankly I doubt Chinoy views this project nothing more than a paycheque where as Jenkins would’ve cared about it.

And her experience directing fiction for Disney was directly related to subject matter she’s an expert in through her previous historical works, in ms marvel 4 and 5. Seems like a totally fictional story and the pressure of being Disney’s new Star Wars revival would be better served by a director who’s either very experienced in fiction or passionate about the franchise. Wish they gave it to someone like Bryce Dallas Howard who has a love for Star Wars and experience in the franchise already, if they’re intent on hiring relatively new talent

I consider myself a life-long SW fan. Saw the original in the theater in '77, ESB is my favorite movie of all-time, Vader is my favorite movie character of all-time...you get the idea. I don't think any hardcore SW fan wants to admit this, but the magic is gone. Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have sucked all the enjoyment out of the franchise and I honestly don't know if they can ever get it back. Same with Marvel. Nothing they do will ever top the Infinity Saga, but there's so much money at stake with these franchises that they have to keep trying to pump out new content. I just can't fathom how anyone at Disney and/or LFL could think the first SW movie in 7 years that people will want to see is another one with Rey as the main character. Didn't the reception to The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker teach them anything?

I haven’t watched the 3rd movie of the Rey Trilogy. I fell out of love after what they did with Luke in the second one. My faith in Star-Wars to be fair isn’t much these days. I truly want to love this series again and Andor has been a massive bright light but I think I need to believe that the new movie has a great story before I can commit to going to it.

What I’ve noticed over the last few years, is that female creatives, writers, directors, producers, they overhype everything that they do, and keep pointing out, “See, I’m a woman, and women are awesome. This is going to be amazing, because it stars a woman, or it was made by a woman.” Have you seen any male creatives doing this? I haven’t. They promote the movie, they promote the actors and crew. They rarely talk about themselves, or point out that the movie is great because it was made by men for men. Yet, female creatives will probably argue that they do.

I’m sorry but Rachel Ziegler did it to herself. When I first started hearing fans complain about her, I actually assumed they were all probably overreacting about something stupid. But then I saw some of the videos of her trashing Snow White and I realized that not all fan outrage is unfounded or stupid. Y’all said “And she’s young. She’s young” followed by “She’s like 24,25.” That’s young but it’s also a grown ass person who should know better. Sorry but give me a break. Y’all are saying 24 like she’s a baby. She was being straight up condescending and arrogant and all kinds of bad words that I won’t say. That sort of personality is difficult to overlook when watching a movie or a show with that actor in it. That’s the problem. These actors really need to keep their little opinions and their egotistical attitudes to themselves because it ruins a fan’s ability to escape into the stories they’re apart of. I mean Ziegler may be playing Snow White but she’s a straight up witch.

I got nervous immediately after reading her interview, as such an activist. I dont care who or what makes a movie, just make it good. And focus on story please! Not focus on being the fist "insert blank" on making such movie. I loved Rey and a lot of the characters in the new movies. I just want some good stories and fun movies. Kind of hope they put out the FIloni film, or Dawn of the Jedi first. Let this one breathe a little still.....

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is not a good storyteller apart from 2 weaker episodes of Mrs Marvel she hasn't directed a movie. She produced a lot of movies but not directed a one that showcases her storytelling. She is still a newbie in the filmmaking world.

Not sure why Kristian is saying that this director is a good choice on the face of it. She hasn't done anything of this scale and Disney desperately need a home run. She has two episodes of a tv show, a bunch of low budget animated stuff and a few documentaries... There are female directors with more experience like Gina Prince, Greta Gerwig, Jane Campion, Kathryn Bigelow etc. Beyond that there are numerous male director who also have more of a track record than her. I hope I am proven wrong and she makes something tremendous, but boy is she an unnecessarily risky choice for a company struggling relative to what they once were

I couldn't dissagree more with you. Just look at Kevin Feige. The Russo Brothers had only made 2 little films that didn't really perform that well. Ryan Coogler only made Creed before doing Black Panther. Jon Watts made a lackluster horror film and a very weak crime thriller that underperformed. It's not about how many movies you made. It's all about recognizing talent and seeing their potential.

Why does everything have to be connected to the Skywalker saga and most people don't want a Rey Palpatine movie. We don't care if the director is female, but we do care that she's an activist first and is already talking about gender with pretending like Hollywood doesn't have enough stories about women. Disney is a business. I own 4 businesses myself and I serv all sides of the electorate. I would never publicly embrace one side or the other if my business could potentially lose 43% or more of my customer base. I'm not in business for politics. I'm in business to make money. I fear Disney will never see a billion dollars again, due to 43% of the fan base being gone from the viewing audience. I hope this new movie is great, because I love Star Wars, and I want it to go back to where it was before The Last Jedi changed everything. I hope that Disney will go back to being a Entertaiment company. And get out of the politics business.

"The Last Jedi" 2007 wasn't even close to competence compared to "The Last Samurai" 2003 a Tom Cruise masterpiece or "Dances With Wolves" 1990 a Kevin Costner masterpiece. Both the same movie with the later replacing Indians with Japanese.

I’m in the camp of feeling alienated with the ham-fisted, blunt and forced political rhetorics in a lot of major films (especially from Disney)which I just want a good movie with characters with attributes that are NATURALLY interweaved with a well written storyline. I can accept different viewpoints as along it’s not overbearing and isn’t there just for the sake of it. I want to see a great Star Wars film again. Chinoy definitely put her foot in her mouth in an attempt to 'poke the bear'. You'd think Disney/LFL would have learned their lesson about this after the whole RJ "fanboy tears" fiasco. I hate to be “that guy”, but one reason why I feel hesitant about the Rey movie, is that it’s the story line that we OG Trilogy fans wanted for LUKE! I remember for YEARS, the talk was we all were going to see Luke training Han and Leia’s kids. AND we were going to see a POWERFUL Luke as well. Now if we had Rey AND FINN training with Luke for all three of the sequels? Then this movie would feel organic. We’ve barely seen her train at all! I dunno. I feel bad for Daisy Ridley man.

I hear your point on Obi Wan having the chance to kill Vader twice and never following through with it. I always interpreted it as that was his failure as a Jedi-he could never bring himself to do it. That’s why it needed to be Luke who defeated Vader.

Luke could not bring himself to kill Vader either. He had the chance after he beat Vader in the duel at the Emperor's throne room, but chose to toss aside his lightsaber. Of course the difference was that Luke still believed Vader could be redeemed and that's why he didn't kill him.

I love Obi-Wan. He's one of my favorite SW characters, but there's no question, he's flawed. He's a liar and a manipulator, but it's those flaws that make him interesting. As well as the consequences his actions (or inactions) have for other characters.

Kristian’s scene might have made more sense but I never had an issue understanding why Obi-Wan wouldn’t kill Vader. It’s not the Jedi way & it’s Anakin… at the end of that fight he can see what a terrible fate Anakin has had.

He just said more money not that it would be a massive hit. 2023 showed that any franchise movie can flop even of great quality (Mission Impossible 7). So I would gues his statement probably reflects more how little money he thinks the Star Wars film will make compared to how massive he expects Furiosa and Dune to be.

@@michaelblack7899Fury Road has built quite a legacy since it’s debut in 2015, keeping in mind Fury Road opened and lost out to Pitch Perfect 2, that being said due to the word of mouth and hype Fury Road was able to have legs. I thought the “I hate you” delivery in revenge of the sith worked for me and was very effective. The rage and anger is shown and I thought Hayden delivered it very well.

It was good…..but compared to the Clone Wars. Anakin was a much better character. The fan film really shows the difference in the way delivery changes how it hits. Yeah. The movies are great for what they are. But the Clone Wars series is the definitive version of that character to me.

It just makes for a silly unbelievable story. I will give a current example of a great show with strong women. Andor has strong women that are very believable and the male characters are all great. Val… cinta… andors mom. Mon mothma… those are great women actors in Star Wars. I like Daisy Ridley. I hate Rey.

@@djbkb25 I really believe the Rey movie with this crazy director is Kathy’s FU to the fans on her way out the door. She knows how hated she is and this is her way of fighting back. So we have to fight back by making sure this movie bombs. And The marvels fail gives me hope that the Rey Movie is the next embarrassment for Disney. And maybe just maybe after these huge financial failures Disney will get back to telling good stories.

someone should tell the guest REY is a Mary Sue, which is not the fault of the actress. its the fault of the writers and directors. whom i think were male. its their fault that they have this character - WITH NO HERO JOURNEY the biggest problem for star wars is - DISNEY if Universal or WB made star wars - aka wrote the story of the film, and made the film - and kept gender politics and race / identity politics out of it. they would make a far better film.

I don't think its a case of people waiting to see this fail at all. As fans we are waiting to see it be great. All I want as a Longtime Star Wars Fan is for them to shut the hell up about female vs men garbage and make a great movie. I'm tired of seeing this over and over. Disney know its the reason their last year of movies all flopped, but yet here we are again after them seemingly admitting it was a mistake that they did it. There is just no way to trust them. I must admit I'm surprised that Kristian said she was the right choice for this movie. Every single movie/documentary of hers are for female empowerment. Its a huge red flag and I'm shocked (well maybe not) that Disney has fed into this again. You talk about PR nightmares. Its not just the wording, its the fact of what she herself represents with her movies and what she clearly pushes.. I'm sure you heard by now the quote doing the rounds from her in the past saying 'I love to make men uncomfortable.' Granted its 8 years ago, but its clear by her past projects up to now, that nothing is different. Disney does not just have a PR problem, they have a common sense and good choice problem. Until they stop feeding this stupid machine thats pits gender against each other nothing will change. I was going to watch this movie at the cinema, but I can't be bothered now. I will wait and hear the reviews from trusted people who have no bias first. IF I hear there is no feminist push and its just a great SW movie I will go. But the odds of this happening I fear are extremely low....

The truth is that I don't care what a director or actor thinks or believes politically or socially, that didn't matter in the success of Top Gun or Barbie, two successful films with different ideas. The important thing is to see a good movie with interesting characters, nothing more. So I will simply judge her work on screen, not her personal ideas.

I am really excited for a Rey movie, I actually love her character and especially Daisy. I just hope it isn't beating you over the head with the political messages like most big movies do today. The original trilogy did a good job of having subtle political messaging, which actually made it fun to analyse the parallells post watching. That's why I love Mando, Rogue One, Andor and Force Awakens. They just focused on telling a good story, and a fun ride.

I don’t think the director should mention anything about being the first woman director for Star Wars or make any kind of show of it because if the movie is not that good or just ok then none of that matters. Just make a good movie regardless of who the director or lead is. Kathryn Bigelow didn’t go on about being a woman directing a male lead war movie in the hurt locker, she just made a great movie that’s it.

It's already too late for Rey Skywalker because they botch her character from the beginning. No matter what she does from now, it will always come back to the fact she didn't earn her Jedi abilities. It won't make sense if she's a Jedi master in the movie. That's why the movie will fail. Also, they should've kept Palpatine her last name to end the Skywalker saga and start a new era.

Disney needs to decide if they want to be an agenda driven company or a money making company. They used to only care about being the latter and practically every movie they put out was a billion dollar hit. Now they have shifted focus and it is killing them financially. I know it's still over 2 years away from release but right now this has The Marvels written all over it.

I'm sorry but the so-called 'agenda driving' didn't start 2 years ago. It's always been there, which I don't necessarily think is a bad thing. Society changes and so do our movies. But irrespective of that. the reason they've not been doing so well is because they were thinking quantity over quality. Also, Marvels didn't do well not because it was supposedly driving an agenda, but because it was a badly put together movie that came out at the tail end of the writer's/actor's strike with little faith from the studios. By little I mean having the review embargo lifted so late for example.

I have ny doubts about the quality. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has only really directed the 2 Ms. Marvel episodes and didn't set the tone with the pilot. A big budget Star Wars film is quite different than that. I would have liked her to direct more live action fiction films before Star Wars (I know she did documentaries but that is different from fictional films). Steven Knight is hitnor miss as a writer usually is best for dramas and most of his attempts outside it have not been successful (Seventh Son and 2019 Serenity). And looking at his work over the last decade he has been much more miss than hit. I could be wrong but I am just saying what gives me doubt about the films quality. Also lucasfilm usually runs into problems when filming begins( Solo, Rogue One, EP. 9, etc) so they aren't out of the woods yet for production problems. Also they already had pre production problems with the change in writers.

It all just comes off as completely out-of-touch on Disney/Lucasfilm’s side. And that, to me, is the most disheartening aspect. How can I trust that they will make a great film when every single move they make and every comment made is a shallow attempt to appeal to half of an audience? God forbid they attempt to make something universal and leave modern politics out of the film entirely.

Damn bro, you nailed it!!! It's not about politics its about entertainment. However, I do feel with the current regime at Lucasfilm, that it is about politics first. I don't have hope for this movie, or The Acolyte for this exact reason, and so far they haven't done anything to prove me wrong. And I WANT to be wrong. I want Star Wars to be awesome again with a united fanbase. I just don't see that happening with the current climate over there. "Agenda" seems to the norm.
