I have been called out. And rightfully so. Here is how well the Fara-J works on 70cm and it does work. Just not all that well. Much like most other 2m antennas. This is also to show you a 70cm Fara-J capable of 13km! WAY better than a rubber Ducky.

I recently built an Ed Fong design, Roll Up J-Pole, 2 meter antenna. Upon testing it, I discovered that it worked equally as well on 70 cm. as it did on the 2 Meter band. 1.02 : 1 VSWR (Depending on the frequency I used!) But, it is close enough for emergency / field work, without even tuning it. So, I wouldn't worry to much if I had a Farra-J antenna and ran it on 70 cm. for a little bit.

Great news on the 70cm version Ben! We all make mistakes but you're a legend for making a dedicate 70cm version! Can we expect maybe a 6m version in the future? :)
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie

6m would be huge! Not saying I won’t try. I’ve been asked quite a bit about this so I better consider it. What would max power you would try and jam through it?

@@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie Well me personally.. maybe 50W? But most HF radios with 6m will do 100W... could make for an interesting video... can you melt a Fara-J 😂

I did notice that your Fara-J antenna is a bit wind resistant. Which makes sense, to me, after using various nylon tie down straps over the years. Those things love to fly around in the wind, even when cranked down tight! I suppose a person could add a gromit for an anchor rope, at the bottom side? or just add an addition anchoring buckle (like the one on the top). Just a thought! Thanks for continuing to design this NEW antenna.
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie 4 месяца назад
There is a tie down on the bottom just like at the top for this very reason. You can either tie it down or weight it. I was changing out antennas and wanted to respect the other operators time and did not tie the bottom down.

For the ISS and a select few other satellites I've used a ¼ Wave for 2m and it's almost a ¾ wave but the main thing is that the radiation angle on 70cm will be anything between 20-45° So most of your signal will go skyward and be best at those angles previously mentioned for 70cm...YMMV 👍
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie 4 месяца назад
Interesting and never thought of it that way. I need to re-test but get the antenna at least one wavelength above ground.
@ScottEvans-vk7hse
@ScottEvans-vk7hse 4 месяца назад
@@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie For 2m/70cm most favour ⅝ Wave as for terrestrial use that gives you a lower radiation angle of between 1-10° and that will favour ground wave comms. Again YMMV! 👍

It takes a real man to admit being wrong. Thanks Ben. FWIW I have used mine on 70cm without any issues. Then again I have been pumping it with 25w so that might have something to do with it. :)

Thanks for sharing! :) Keep in mind if it is wet and the SWR is high like it would be at 70cm it might get warm. If you have any issues let me know and I will replace any 'test' units you might melt :)

Very cool innovation! I’m also in Calgary and I would be very curious to see how your Fara-J GMRS antenna would perform indoors - maybe attached to a window. Why? With your nice winters, it would be interesting to use GMRS between our house and vehicles. And even if the performance is suboptimal, it is still a plus in my view since we would t have to mount anything outside. I could see this as part of a comms plan for families in the neighborhood. Maybe I shall test this 😊 73, Diego VE6DPC

I thought I saw somewhere that if you shorten the 2m version using the upper clip you can get it resonant on 70cm.

You can definately help the tuning but you would need a antenna tuner to get it properly done. Here is the video you might have seen ru-vid.comJYkSCSzqHQc?feature=share

Ben have thought of making a 220 version of your antenna
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie 4 месяца назад
Yes I have. Here is the thing that is happening right now. I am establishing the logistics, supply chain and manufacture of one antenna and slowly going to release others as I get comfortable with how things are going. With this comes having to choose what products to release next. I am choosing 2m, 70cm, and soon GMRS. 220 is on the list but these will have to come first.

I am interested to know if you could mount the 70cm antenna on the reverse side. Feed them both with the same feed point, kinda like a fan dipole. You could test by mounting the 70cm antenna on the back side of the 2m antenna, and using the tap points you use now. Just a crazy idea. 73s, KG5PRT
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie

I have thought abut this a lot. I will definitely try. Here is what I predict though. Is that any metal or animal within 2 wavelengths of an antenna will create a effect. Having two antennas stacked will effectively detune each one, likely making both ineffective... Now that I am typing this it occurs to me that one might just have to tune both antennas in conjunction with each other in close range and possibly this could work kinda like how the DX commander works or a fan dipole... Anyhow YES! this is something worth testing. Thanks for having me type this out and flesh out the concept.
@mgarza5157

If you use a vna, you could test to see where it is tuned and possibly adjust.
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie

Yes exactly
@paulthelefty
@paulthelefty 2 месяца назад
What if you took this concept and mounted both antennas on the same pole with one inverted? So stacked one above the other? You would still have to deal with the coax passing near the lower antenna, but then maybe you only have to do fine-tuning on one of them? This plus the idea of some kind of grommet at the bottom to help keep everything from getting stress on your cable and connection points… Bravo for being honest and forthcoming, and for science! :-)

I'm curious how the SWR performs across some oddball ranges, specifically from 118-174mhz and 430-470MHz range. It could be really handy for us. 73 de VA6ELT.

For lightweight RG316 but no more than 15' amzn.to/3WxfsHG (this is what I am using in the video) or if you need longer RG8X is good amzn.to/4byeW0F

Yes-ish. Thing is that the antenna at a lower SWR does work better. Substantially better. However if you just need one ‘utility’ antenna for both bands the 2m will do
