Three years since this was posted I just acquired a Godox XPro II and I already had a Yongnuo 565II so this is the kind of "thought experiment" explained in a sensible manner. I think I can't be the only person who wonders if there is a short cut to get the different systems to play nice with each other, and what will you gain or give up if you want to try getting odd things to communicate. Nicely done.

I eventually chose to simplify my life and go with Godox solely. Their camera independent protocol allows me to use the flashes off camera as long as I have a camera specific trigger.

Initially, when I mixed Godox and Yongnuo flashes, I typically set the Youngnuos to S1 for triggering, and then controlled their settings with the Youngnuo trigger not on camera, but in my pocket. When I used a friends YN685 which lacks S1, I just connected the Youngnuo trigger on top of the X1 trigger on camera and used the XPro trigger in my pocket for more convenient Godox flash adjustments, so you can almost always combine systems, as long as you can live in manual mode, either daisy-chaining triggers or using S1. Sometimes I use one of my most unfortunate photo purchases, the minuscule Fuji EF-X20 in S1 mode, aimed at the "real" slave flash if it is in a light modifier or umbrella or a moonlight located behind my Godox flashes and wouldn't reliably see the radio-controlled flashes when they trigger. I dial it down so low it won't light pollute, but it will still be enough to trigger the flash that I am using. Btw, if you put a Youngnu flash in TTL mode, on top of a receiver sending a manual flash trigger, I don't think you will get the intended light settings, since normally when you send the manual trigger signal it comes as the photo is taken, and the TTL flash would then in most cases flash at 1/32 or 1/64 and then wait for the camera to calculate exposure needs, and send a second trigger pulse including final power requested for when the photo is taken. Since the photo has already been taken, the TTL flash would not actually contribute in a controllable way to the actual photo, since it would always just use its default baseline pre-exposure setting, expecting the camera to tell it what settings should actually be used for the "real" shot. I think you would have more control by daisy-chaining the triggers and have both systems in M. So I guess this boils down to that you should probably have bought the X1 trigger, not the receiver. Since the XPro trigger, doesn't have a hot shoe for other triggers it cant be used for daisy-chaining. But combining them and using the XPro off camera is a much nicer way to control your Godox flashes, and that can be done without having it connected to the camera. as long as it uses the same channel as the on-camera trigger. You also need to set the on-camera trigger to passive triggering, so it doesn't override the settings you do with the non-attached trigger.

Wow! Thank you for sharing! I ended up getting more Godox flashes. I think it is so much easier that they amongst each other "speak" the same protocol, and that if you have a trigger that works for your camera brand, then the flash itself is practically camera brand independent. As long as you of course shoot you flash off camera.

@@frederikboving You might consider only getting x1 triggers for the other brands, you only need one xpro for convenient adjustments, and when shooting TTL the x1 does the same as an xpro. It also can have a secondary trigger daisy-chained to it

@@ipadista Jaclu, remind me to consult with you before I buy gear the next time! That potentially will save me a lot of money! I did the simple and expensive thing and bought 3 pros, one for Sony, one for Nikon and one for Fuji. Now my 3 Godox flashes can be fired irrespective of the camera body. And the user interface is the same :-)
@ipadista

@@frederikboving A bit long, sorry about that :) For convenience whilst in the Godox universe, having an XPro for each system makes total sense. You might want to consider an X2 next time you get a trigger, the screen is smaller but usability is otherwise the same as the XPro, and it has Bluetooth, so you can use a phone/tablet app to adjust and save your settings, great for fixed setups! And of course, it has the pass-through hot-shoe. However if the purpose is daisy-chaining triggers, the X1 makes more sense, it does the job and is much cheaper. I have opted for one XPro and two X1 for brands I don't use as much. The XPro can still be used as a pocketable controller regardless of the brand of the camera, and as long as its the right X1, I get TTL/HSS. For me, it's usually if I borrow/rent other light gear that the XPro turns out to be suboptimal due to no daisy-chaining abilities. And if you are fine by running the other controller in manual mode, you just need one X1/X2, since for manual mode the brands don't matter. If you are borrowing/renting a studio, the lights there often ends up being non-Godox, then an X1/X2 saves the day. You can use the available studio lights and your own flashes. Of course in such situations, you could also use S1, but then you lose the ability to control the flashes without having to walk around as you adjust them. Technically you can use a Godox trigger to adjust the Godox flashes even if they are S1 triggered, but that is getting into very peculiar territory, and is probably not something most photographers would bother with unless they are pretty nerdy :) Unless I'm running and gunning at an event, I rarely use TTL. And at such times I usually use an on-camera flash, making triggers a non-issue. If you do studio work or other preset lighting setups. You can already use your extra triggers to help you a lot. Set the trigger on-camera to only trigger the flashes, and not send out any settings, and use one of your other XPros and a light meter, this way you can stand at any point, trigger selected groups with the detached trigger and use a light meter to verify that you get the right level of exposure from the flashes. And conveniently adjust settings without having to run back to the camera all the time! If you develop in the direction of using flashes in static situations, studio, product photography, etc, then you will probably not use TTL much anyhow, so then the brand of the camera or trigger becomes a nonissue, and you don't need to match cameras and triggers. I hope this has given you some food for thought, Good luck with your lighting!

@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 года назад

When you have more than flash (like above) do you set all in same channel and group or like one flash will be A 1/32 and other will be B 1/16
@frederikboving
@frederikboving Год назад
The latter. But it comes down to how much complexity you want to manage. You can make things simpler by having more flashes on the same group and sometimes that works fine. However, if you really want to control things and make sure the balance between the different flashes is exactly like you want it, then you need to use more groups.

Uh, I don't think it will work with any speedlite. This one is designed to work with Nikon (hence the N after the name) and the Yongnuo YN685 has the same protocol (or close to) as Nikon. This one: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1341963-REG/godox_x1r_s_ttl_remote_controller.html is designed to work with Sony flashes and so on. So you have to buy the receiver specific for the flash brand you are using, as I understand it.

But I have an older flash intended for Canon and when I put it on the x1r-n it doesn't even trigger. I wanted to use it purely as a manual flash and I thought that at least the central pin should work with any flash but now I am confused. Am I doing something wrong?
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 4 года назад
Hi Conox, have you tried to push the test button on the X1R-N and see what happens? Does it make the Canon flash fire? If not, try to wriggle the flash in the hotshoe a bit - sometimes a little mis-alignment can cause the flash not to fire. Quite counter intuitive, I find that the flash sometimes fires better when it is not pushed all the way into the hot shoe, but a tiny bit of space is left so that it is not pushed all the way in. So give different positions a try and see if that makes a difference.

If your Cannon Speedlite has optical slave capability, then you should be able to use the Godox as the master and the Canon as the optical slave. But of course the Canon has to be in line of sight from the Godox, and the Canon would have to work in manual mode. Hope that was the question.
