In this video, whilst I take a look the new Polar Pro Peter McKinnon variable ND filters my focus is on the diffusion side. There is a new “mist” diffusion version which is very interesting. I compare it to some well known diffusion filters. There will be a full comparison of the variable ND side to other brands in my next video.

Unfortunately there is no part 2 as not long after this I had a huge amount of gear stolen from me which included the Canon R5, a7siii, many lenses and all my filters.

This will obviously not be new to you, but the visual style and (sometimes not so) subtle jokes with your professional attitude is incredibly refreshing. As you said, one could have watched a hundred more or less identical videos on these things on here already. Your different approach is very appreciated, thank you. I was up in the air on these or the Tilta Motorized Variable ND Matte Box - this obviously will give me a better look, but the Matte Box probably will be more convenient. I think this helped make up my mind, glad you keep making content, you're one of the few video reviewers I trust.

I have to say, out of all those examples, I like the Tiffen Black Diffusion FX the best. It's the most natural looking of the lot. It's not as intrusive or effect looking, if that makes sense. The PMKNVD comes in a close second. Hope your dad feels better!

Cheers for mentioning about increased softness with telephoto lenses. Was shooting recently on a site at 200mm, with the SigII mist, on distant buildings and was wondering why the footage was not entirely sharp. Head scratching ensued. Pilot error as usual.

Wich one are the advantages of having this filter with VND Mist Edition instead of VND Signature Edition + Black pro mist. Isn't better to have both separatly and use it when you want? Thanks

I've posed this question on two other channels regarding the haptic feedback/hard stops on these new filters, however no one is willing to answer it, so third time lucky maybe - what is the real benefit of this new 'feature'? I use VND's myself for shooting video, however I don't care how many stops I'm dialling in, I'm simply concerned about is 'is my exposure correct', so all I do is rotate it until the histogram looks good. Then if you're using one for long exposure photography, again you're not really concerned about how many stops you're dialling in, all you're concerned about is 'I want a certain length exposure time, so I'll rotate the filter until it gives me that'.

Can we ask for other filters? The Schneider Black Magic filters are among the hottest sellers on B&H. Reason being IMHO that they are subtle, especially in strong light, with good (not overwhelming) bloom. Thanks Phillip.

Hello Philipp, I don't get how you could find the PP VNDs "best you've ever used", have you never seen the crazy White-Balance Shift changing from Min. to Max. Mark? I have compared so much VNDs and honestly this shift in Color Temperature was the highest on the PolarPro VNDs.

Schießstand - Foto & Video did I say those exact words? Did I go into detail about them at all? Did I say I will be comparing them to others in my next video? I personally have never found a variable ND without a colour shift and my tests for the upcoming 2nd video prove this but then 2 of the key tests in that video the PP ones did the best; but you will have to wait for that video. Please do your own video in the meantime showing your findings. Ta

I found them to have the least color shift, feature wise they are like PPs but just for half the money.

God I hate the look of the diffusion on every single filter besides the polar pro and even those I didn't care for. They all just look like foggy lenses. I swear people trick themselves into thinking stuff looks better when it doesn't. The ones that weren't overly strong didn't seem like the effect was consistent throughout the frame and it was confusing my eye. This probably isn't the ideal scenario where these would excel but idk. I just don't think the diffusion look is for me I guess.

Brilliant video Philip! Would love those filters but they are priced out of my range! And nomatic no longer allowed to sell in Europe from tomorrow I was saving for the nomatic x mckinnon bag but that looks like it’s not happening now! You got any advise on a nice camera bag with a little storage for a few shirts etc to?

It wish it had IR and UV cut in addition to being an ND, rather than mist. With Blackmagic cameras, I need IR CUT, and I rather not stack many filters.

TopicRuben yeah don’t go to polar pro. Go to dealers who have stock of the original one. You might get lucky but the old ones aren’t inferior, some may prefer them as they don’t have hard clicks

They are great filters but at that price it's hard to recommend them knowing the Freewell Variable NDs are out, you can buy a pack of one 2-5ND, and one 6-9ND Freewell filter and two black promists, one 1/8th and one 1/4th all for 82mm for the same price that you can get the two PMVND filters.
