The USMNT is all set for Copa America after friendlies against Colombia and Brazil to prepare for the tournament. Gregg Berhalter will be judged on how this team performs in Copa America. Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Folarin Balogun and Matt Turner will all be under pressure to deliver a strong performance. But what level of outcome is enough for us to say we had a successful Copa America? The American Soccer council discusses.

Have to remember that GGG was on that gritty 2002 team. Plus he was the one who headed the ball against Germany

I was at the game in orlando. Would love to send some footage of the game .. they played good. Even the Brazilian fans i spoke to acknowledged that. It was funny listing to all the booo's from the stadium when Berhalters name was announced.

This analysis gets to the heart of one of the biggest problems I have with GGG. There is more talent available to the USMNT than ever before but there is not enough talent available to “seal club” the opponent to victory with any chosen style of play. GGG seeming preferred style of play seems to ask everyone to do something that they aren’t best at and refuses to build a playing style that best utilizes the talent available to the USMNT. A playing style that demands the US team to possess the ball and work the ball up the sidelines to ARob & Dest only to fire in crosses to Pulsic, Weah, Gio, Balo, & Pepi, none of whom would be thought of as players who are best with their foreheads, is bonkers!!! All of those players I named are CLEARLY better with their feet than their foreheads and better in space than in a crowd. Also, we’re not in a position to “out-technical” the best 15-20 teams in the world so effort, attitude, & coaching are going to be critical for the USMNT to be successful.

@2:00 i think theres something inherently wrong with this team's mood and mindset that originates from the coaching and coached tactics.

The US men’s performance was a start. However, it’s also not telling of anything. Just that we did okay in a friendly. Friendlys are not taken seriously for these big WC winning teams.

I agree with so many of the things you guys talked about, but wanted to add something about Scally. I'm not sure why so many are surprised that he stepped up and demonstrated he can fill our RB role competently. My comp on him is an upgraded Cherundolo. He's played nearly 100 Bundesliga games at this point, many as a starter for a good team (that had a bad year after losing their best offensive player on a free transfer last summer). At the same age, Cherundolo was also breaking through as a young starter in Germany, but in the 2. Bundesliga. He didn't play his first game in the top flight until he was two years older than Scally's current age. Cherundolo was never doing the types of things we see from Dest, but would easily be the greatest RB we've had preceding the current generation. He was a responsible defender, and when asked could deliver generally consistent and accurate crosses (he had the bonus versus the current team of McBride or Dempsey or even Altidore as potential recipients). I absolutely see Scally as being a player that can provide the same sort of steady defensive work and periodic assist when advancing up the right flank. But he is better in tight spaces than Cherundolo was, has a stature advantage for set piece situations, and is building top level experience earlier in his career. The root of Scally's inconsistency with the USMNT is a mixture of youth (almost all players develop a more consistent baseline performance expectation as they approach their prime) and GGG's inept tactics that aren't flexible in a way that leverages our players' strengths.

Great synopsis of Scally. I’m glad he is getting the nod from Gregg. He will not let us down if given the right direction and role.
@alexscott380
@alexscott380 Месяц назад
Completely agree with you! Another thing I’d like to kinda piggy back off of your points is a superb defender. I’ve seen the likes of lalas and I think McBride state dest adds more defensively which is comical. We will miss dest going forward for sure and his just flair in general. But I’m far more confident in Scally defending 1v1 against elite level wing play. So much that I think we’ll only miss dest in our first two games against the two weaker opponents I anticipate will sit very deep. He made some decent runs vs Brazil and even played McKennie through to find pulisic on the shot Allison saved. Just wish Gregg wouldn’t try and get Scally to be the attacker dest is.
@chrishenderson1262
@chrishenderson1262 Месяц назад
@@alexscott380 100%. I think he can add some offensive help via periodic crosses, but he's not going to get forward and combine in a way anywhere close to what Dest does. Honestly, that's OK too. We have other players we can rely on for creativity in the final 3rd. I'd be more than happy for Scally to pick his moments to serve a few decent balls each game, but mostly concentrate on defending and keeping balance on his side. Regarding Lalas and McBride, I think Lalas is intentionally provocative with many of his comments, which I personally find annoying in any commentator. To me he's sort of the Skip Bayless of soccer commentary, which I am happy to tune out. McBride is someone I respect much more, especially for the level of play he achieved with Fulham, but I've also seen some stuff recently that leaves me thinking he's not cut out to be a strong evaluator of other player's roles and talent. I've seen him on several of the CBS Golazo podcasts, with Jimmy Conrad and Charlie Davies (both of whose commentary I generally like). McBride mispronounced Folarin Balogun's first name every time he said it in several of those segments, which to me is just odd. Especially since McBride had a prominent role with USSF during the time we were recruiting the player. You'd think he could get his name correct. Perhaps it's just a innocent inability to pronounce a somewhat unique name, but I think it might expose a lack of nuance that probably bleeds over into how he might judge factors that require a higher level of thoughtfulness.

17:30 to 19:09 + AWESOME analogy on how Coaching is representative of how a Team’s persona is! 🇺🇸⚽️🙂 As a life long Detroit Lions American football fan, the current TEAM 100% represents Head Coach Dan Campbell!!! MCDC is Awesome! And is pretty much the polar opposite as ggg / gregg behalter! The Team takes on the Personality of the Coach! So curious to see what this teams potential would be with a Competent Coach!!! 🇺🇸⚽️🙂👍🏼

I think the elephant in the room no one talks about is our federation's relationship with the women's side of the game. The way they blackmailed the federation in the court of public opinion really showed how political things are for our federation. To me the biggest handicap in hiring any coach to replace gregg the first time was, since that successful black mail by the women's side, we HAVE to pay the women's coach the same. So maybe we could have afforded a quality coach but, we'd be literally paying double that wage that most other federations wouldn't have to deal with. We're also, as opposed to every other major soccer nation, in a quandary where the public cares way more about the women's side than the men's side. (This point is not a critique, just an observation). So with all that being said, whatever coach they had to decide on could never ever criticize the federation's political decisions politically (and yes rainbow numbers on a national jersey is 100 percent political). So for me Gregg was a shoe in for rehire, he's fine with the paycheck they could afford him and is clearly fine with the political culture of the federation. Furthermore, our federation is fine with mediocrity on the men's side as it keeps the highlight on the women's side. Now I realize I may not have put this post as politically correct as some would deem necessary, but I hope it gives other minds some food for thought. Admittedly I am a mouth breather, who in my hubris, can define what a woman is. Also I wish the best for the nation, and the male and female side of the game. Period.
@nerychristian
@nerychristian Месяц назад
True. We will never reach our full potential until we unlink the men's team from the woman's team. They need to create two separate soccer federations. One for the men's, and one for the women's side.

More importantly de-link the MLS from the Men’s team. MLS is who runs things.

I've coached youth teams before. Players may play bad but if all the players play bad then its on the coach. The Colombia performance was on everyone but the coach is chiefly responsible. The coach has to 1. Get the pkayers motivated for the game (Gregg did not) 2. Tactics need to be suited for the opponent (they were not) 3. Make clear the intensity he expects (he did not) 4. Make in game adjustments as needed ( * HE DID NOT!* ) Everything a coach is *REQUIRED* to do *HE DID NOT!*

Great analysis but as an argentinean I think US still has to master the art of coaching. I'm sorry but the system is not working. Encouraging draw against Brazil but make no mistake this Brazil is not the one we'll see in the Copa. I believe Panama and Bolivia are accessible games, forget Uruguay, la celeste will prove too much for Berhalter. Beyond that I don't see USMNT reaching semis.

We don't hurt teams in transition attack because GGG has the team hold the ball back so we can set up our offense. But that allows the defense to setup their defense as well. It's like making the Lakers of the 80's a half court team versus a fastbreak team.

GGG fired post-Copa due to horrendous performances means US Soccer has 2 thoughts if GGG were to be fired. a) hire a credible int'l mngr who quickly shows the fans that the last 6 yrs were a complete waste of time with GGG or, b) and most likely, another mediocre MLS manager is hired to replace him

A 0-1 loss and some ties. That's all you'll ever get from Gregg's teams, no matter the level of opponents. Also, I don't think we played a "mid-block" against ENG in Qatar. We held the ball all day in the middle third because their midfielders are a bunch of tactically inept forwards playing in the wrong part of their formation. The only exception is Grealish, who seems to understand that his job isn't to compete with forwards for time on the ball and space in the final third.

Gregg Berhalter coached the team to pass & move better before the Colombia. Tyler Adams said in an interview that Berhalter told the players that almost all of the Copa America teams were better in tight spaces, so the team worked on improving this. Berhalter still has bad tactics though, plus an overemphasis on pressing, and he doesn't take risks calling up new talents or new players.
@bryseisme2

Gregg Berhalter can't force the players to pass to certain places because there's no way for Berhalter to predict where the opposition will be. The players play their passes where the opponents aren't. They aren't thinking of where Gregg wants the pass. We saw this against Colombia and Brazil where the passing was twice as good as before.

To answer the main title, the short answer is No. Berhalter has only beaten Mexico as coach of a team considered decent, and this is the worst Mexican team in decades. Berhalter is a terrible coach and I think we get grouped. Their arrogance will show in the Bolivia game and get a draw, may beat Panama, and then get boat raced by Uruguay.
