This subject of the Winter Fuel Allowance for ALL Old Age Pensioners will never go away. At the very first instance, and then for ever onwards - of Pensioners being admitted to hospital 'Gasping for their last breaths" it will be on the front pages of every newspaper and news outlet. It's very worrying that the very first thought of this Labour Government, when it was trying to save these "billions" of pounds, was let's remove the Universal Winter Fuel allowance for Pensioners. I dread to think what is next in store to pummel Pensioners.

It is not just the WFP, it is the absence of honesty in the Labour manifesto that promised a fully costed plan to freeze energy prices, then they simply act to ensured pensioners freeze this winter! It is the lack of honesty, in their manifesto promise, echoed in his speech, to work in the interest of the working people, then act in self-interest, lining their own pockets with non-taxable “gifts”? It is also about Reeves, putting in a claim for energy costs of £820 for March and April, asking the taxpayers to pay for it, then dishonestly picking the pockets of the vulnerable elderly who have paid tax and Ni all their lives, stating there was no money for WFP? He says he understands that politics “can make or break a life” then pledges to go after the long-term sick taking their benefits to fund public services, I suppose the elderly and the long-term sick will have an increased need for them when he has finished attacking them. He rails against “politically easy answers” but penalises the vulnerable instead of focusing on the “broad shoulders” he previously talked about. His Chancellor Reeves offers a bowl of porridge to young children, (Breakfast Clubs) rather than making the political hard decision to scrap Universal Credit two child barrier, the real reason for child poverty. He made a good speech, his ability to do this is why I voted Labour, but actions speak louder than words and his actions have already done too much damage - he has eroded confidence and trust, his speech was not enough to mend this. I will not be fooled again.

Starmer has not realised yet he doesn't need to 'blame the Tories' any more now he is in government. Somehow he thinks people will think he is clever continuing to blame them and taking revenge on pensioners, instead he makes himself look foolish and small minded. The whole country would prefer a U turn rather than a stubborn man who doesn't listen to good advice from his own people, unions, charities and common sense ordinary people. A simple solution is to pay it to everyone eligible previously but make an adjustment for higher rate tax paying pensioners to pay through the tax system which can be done easily and produce the same end result. If Starmer lets this go ahead, it is a sign that he will be as rigid on other crucial decisions whether he is right or wrong which will be a disaster for this country.

Why wait until the next election , when you can seriously make them look totally empty by voting them all out during ones local elections !

I get really annoyed. I am a pensioner just over by a couple of pounds. But that couple of pounds I have to pay tax. If I get a pension rise. It's more tax for me yet again. I wish I never worked all my life. Then I would get all the benefits and all that goes with it. Free glasses dentist rent rates etc etc. How fair is that

Apparently on TV this morning, it said Starmer took a donation of £20k for accommodation, because his son was studying for exams and Journalists were around his home. He is a millionaire, so why cant he afford it himself.

He should try telling that to the pensioners who will freeze to death this winter before they get chance to pick up the triple lock. The winter fuel allowance costs £1.4bn yet he gave £10bn overseas for the BS climate 'emergency' and £4bn to Ukraine.

Is a £900 increase in your state handout not enough for you? You want an extra £300 as well? Pensioners were protected in the credit cruch, protected in austerity, protected in the cost of living while those who are the poorest in society get starved of food, heat and housing. I’m not angry or appalled by the means testing of the winter fuel allowance. The threshold could have been widened granted. However no matter how high the threshold was there was always going to be a pensioner that was £1 over and doesn’t get it. This happens with all other benefits. This is certainly a lesson for my generation and Gen Z that you should not rely on the government or your kids as your retirement, it is your own responsibility.

Labour keep on with this £22 billion deficit when that is a drop in the ocean on a public sector budget in excess of £1 trillion. Whereas the last Labour government left an annual budget deficit of £165 billion. So who left a better economy ?

the lady who was an ex nurse will be getting an NHS pension on top of her state pension. Other than that she could have opted for her pension to be fully converted for a lump sum. I know this because my sister in law was a nurse and she opted to exchange some of her NHS pension to a lump sum. She will not suffer unless she has used up her lump sum. I am 72 so I get the old state pension at almost 50 quid a week less than the new state pension. I am not affected by this because I retired to live abroad and we do not get the winter fuel allowance here.

I don't see any problem with this benefit, like most others, being means tested. Many pensioners do not need this benefit. They own the majority of the housing stock in the UK. It is children that live in the greatest poverty in the UK.
