Very good. I was worried about you after last week when you mentioned the wasps! I'm glad this week that you took control of them free electrons so that they would not be any risk of them interacting with the wasps and surprising you when you would be in a very vunerable position. Keep up the good work. A swatting tool would be handy to have if you see wasps - you could probably print one. Glad I could be of assistance.

Still too cold here for the wasps, and even when it does warm up, they are pretty dumb wasps. Now the hornets you don’t want to mess with, but the wasps seem to have an intelligence level somewhere below that of a krill. In other words, David Attenborough would not have much to make a documentary on, if it was purely on the subject of the Winter Activities of the Canadian Paper Wasp.

Yeah, dropping something over those terminals is not a good look. A few decades ago my boss and I had to do an investigation and report to detail the cost for repairs to a very very large, very very expensive, piece of equipment after a cutlery drawer was upended over some very very large batteries. The full story is not for the internet, so best left for a night around the campfire if you ever get to Aus, but how no-one died or was seriously injured was beyond us both. Love the 3D printed parts for assembling the tee, it's all coming together really nicely and saving a ton of money to spend on other fun stuff! Looking forward to the next instalment and to see what storage you include under the rest of that false floor 🙂

Yes, the amps are much better when they only come out of the battery in a controlled manner! I’ve seen an aluminum pipe short out a deep cycle battery bank - luckily it was kicked off as it rolled on - but a good shower of sparks for sure! I have a feeling that I’ll run out of uses for the 3D printer right about the same time I find the end of the internet 🤣.

nice. remind me again. Are you planning on mini split heat pump?
@BruceandKrista
@BruceandKrista 4 месяца назад
Currently torn between a mini split, and just an inverter A/C. Inverter A/C is a nice small complete package, but having R/C heat would be nice, and save installing a heater. We don’t plan on being in cold places, but suspect will need to take the chill off here and there!

I really liked your solution for mounting the extrusion to the walls with VHB. I am in the middle of a similar interior build with 8020 and would like to do something similar. Are you positing your 3d files any place for those of us that want to copy you? Keep up the amazing work, its been a pleasure to watch your build, I have learned a ton.

I haven’t posted them yet, but once I get through the bench seating areas I’ll post a few STL’s over on Cults3D and Thingiverse. Still have a few more bits I’m designing to fit it.

…the ease with which you peel off the VHB backing is interesting. I wonder if I’m doing it wrong, or if there’s a difference in how different vendors cut the base stock. I have a couple rolls of VHB 5952/5925 cut by random Amazon suppliers and separating the backing layer has been absolute hell. I’ve just about given up and now leave some extra backing on the roll. Ie: I peel off the 2-3” I need, and then cut the foam only, leaving 2-3” of red liner behind. Now I have excess liner so that next time I can just lift it off. I’m not sure why it’s so hard for me to peel off. I should search for some answers.

LOL - it’s not an easy task is it! My trick is “crunching” a corner back a little to cause a wrinkle in the backing - I find that often this opens a little gap along one of the sides where you can then get a fingernail in to start peeling if you’re lucky! - it’s for sure not a “works every time” - but it sure looks like it after editing 🤪

Sorry if you’ve already covered it - what do you think your cost per kWh will be for the batteries including BMS? I’ve got one ~5kWh rack mount 48v battery. Am wondering if it’s time to switch to rolling my own. (I’m confident that I have the right tools / skills / etc, just not sure if it’s worth the time and effort and limits on modularity for doing it the way you are)
@BruceandKrista
@BruceandKrista 4 месяца назад
Well, if I’m doing the math right…. I think about $100USD/kWh for this setup…. I’ll be doing more videos on the setup coming up. I’ll be using 3X 150A BMS’s and 3X Active balancers. (These are figured into the above cost, but nothing beyond that)

@@BruceandKrista Nice. The current sale on rackmount batteries at SignatureSolar gets them down to $220/kWh. I don’t really know how much battery I need. Right now my system isn’t very optimized, and my battery lasts a day. Unistrut on my roof and a pallet of used panels from Santan is my plan. If I was going to add another 5kWh I’d probably just spend $1100 on a rack mount battery. More than that and I’d roll my own. More battery when I get solar would probably help me with longer patches of cloudy weather. Or, if I’m traveling cross-country with shore power every couple days, I could still be “grid powered” for a couple days of driving :)

It can be a little difficult to figure out needs - and having a scalable system is a great way to go. Also difficult to know how much solar will actually be absorbed - as there are so many variables. Like you, I’ll have a starting point, and once we get things rolling we will revisit and revise where needed!
