Take off the front wheels or the rear and let the roller serve as wheels, you will turn better because it pivots better when it’s not fighting an extra set of wheels
I was getting worried about him. Started thinking the worst then I saw him in trailmakers on scrapman’s channel and was so relieved! Nice to see him back on his own channel as well. I suppose he just needed a break from scrap mechanic which I can understand. I wouldn’t mind watching him play some other games on this channel just to keep variety and prevent a game from getting “stale”. Doesn’t even have to be a sandbox builder game either.
The outer pistons are fighting the middle piston all the time, making turning from one direction to another slower. You should have that middle piston contract half way to zero whenever you press A or D so it turns faster with more force.
That's what I was thinking. The middle piston needed to be half length. It would especially help when turning from one direction immediately to the other direction.
I did something interest once, I had a mobile base, it was one of those land trains with the cars and everything, but it was powered by a single mono-wheel, it was slow and heavy, but I liked it, also after a while I got tire of how hard it was to move at a decent speed so I added a second wheel which made it harder to turn so I returned to one. Land trains are really fun to make and makes exploration interesting with all of the obstacles.

This is a pretty cool build. You should definitely load it up in a test save and see if you can at least plow down a farmbot. Perhaps extend the braces for the roller upwards above it and put some spud guns that are slightly angled down so you could shoot the farmbot if you are able to knock it down.
If you mad the back tires steer with the steamroller it will turn hella sharp. I always do all wheel drive and all wheel steering it's actually really good in the game you can even adjust em and make your truck crab walk.
You are actually fighting that middle piston... just get rid of it. You only need the outer two pistons. You could put a regular hitch like you had and have the two pistons set up as a push/pull to double the strength... then make the hitch bearing steerable to add even more. This way you could have a far better steering speed... which would let you do this with only 2 controllers (for steering) and less upgrade kits. I would double up on the bearings on the drum and vehicle wheels for more speed (try just powering the drum first). Scrap Man got me into this game, but I did not run across even him until 1Q 2023. I am doing a mostly nomad build with only a farm and glow bugs at a fixed location. I have saws all around the farm on a peninsula and the 2 side they typically attack from has an arm on the corner that swings back and forth pushing the bots into the saws. It is not very powerful so it struggles, but gets them pretty good anyways (mostly because they can not jump back and slowly get pushed in). I have tested it with a second day raid on 64 oranges and it worked well. I just had 3 hay bots stuck in the water on one side as it is too steep to climb out. All the reset were4 killed by the saws. The arms actually do a bit of damage to the bots too. I kept it compact so 1 gas engine could power enough saws to go about 70% around the farm. I have 8 water cannons on a pivot in the middle hooked to 4 water chests with 4 pumps and this is plenty as the pumps are MUCH faster now (around 4x or more). My vehicle is WAY smaller than Scrap Man's nomad vehicle as I run 6 chests with 4 on the bottom and 2 flipped over on each end and the craft bot in the middle. Then I tipped the whole thing on the side. I walk on the screen and the back sticks out the bottom a bit, but this makes the floor the thickness of large container on its side. The refiner plugs into the end of the crafting chain but sadly I could not put it on its side. I only have one resource collector though as I put my bed in the floor with a door over it. Around my bed is the gas and ammo canister and all the controllers and gas engine. This way I hit a button to reveille them if I need to adjust something. I have small 2x2 block giving me access to each pair of containers in the craft chain. I have one extra in the back of the vehicle to my pump for the packing stations and a water tank. I have a hatch that opens on the roof and a door on each side that flips up when I get out of my seat.. I have the chef bot on top of the battery container in the back with the dress bot. I have a table with a mug and all 3 sandwiches. I even have a toilet, toilet paper and sink. In the new update they are adding fire and I built my vehicle out of wood (with cardboard on the ceiling) to keep it light and have a very low center of gravity. It is almost impossible to flip. Well to protect my vehicle I added a water cannon on top pointed at a 45 degree angle that spins around like a sprinkler. Every time it goes around it angles up 15 degrees until it hits 90 degrees. This covers the whole vehicle and everything around it. I can do this maybe 2-3 times before running out of water, but I have probably double that amount of water in my crafting chain too. I have 5 drills up front on a bar that can angle up and down 30 degrees. This works great for mining and is hooked up to its own electric battery. This kills anything but a farm bot on a ram. I can swap them out for 3 saw blades underneath. I leave the bearings for both on so I do not need to reconnect the motor. I have saw blades under the edge of the vehicle sticking out, but unpowered and drills on the 6 evenly spaced wheels (with front and back steering and the middle tires fixed). It is pretty fast and turn well and does not flip over and the regular bots are scared of it. I have lights inside and lots of lights on the front and all the windows are the large bubble windows. They look so nice I had to use them. I have 4 in the front, but sadly the refine bot takes up a lot of space on the right side. I have a single strip of wood between the windows (as the vehicle is an odd number of blocks wide) and have 2 spud guns out the front... one on top of the other instead of side by side. I did an old school paint job of cream (pail yellow was the closest) and dark red... red on the bottom 1/4 and roof and cream on the side with black underneath and in the wheel wells and on the floor inside. I do not have a horn... yet. Sadly my map is odd. I have very few farmers (5 total) and 3x 4 floor warehouses and only a single 2 floor warehouse. I hate running those 4 floor warehouses. They take forever and dying sucks. I have plenty of everything else pretty close to my farm and the packing station. I also have only found 1 farm bot location and one more in the 4 floor warehouse I cleared. I am wondering if I will need to start over when the new updates come out (hopefully sometime this year (2023). They are adding a bunch of new bots (6-8 it looks like), some new outfits, better lighting, fire, bug fixes, less lag... and it will be the retail version finally. I think it has been in early access for what, 7 years.

Great vid, try removing the front wheels from the rear half, also you may find it works better if you allow the piston on the outside of the turn to extend, as it is its limiting your turn.
I suppose you can improve a little more the turning performance by having the middle piston set at half the length (4) instead of being zero. Initially it was contrasting the turn, but now it contrasts releasing it, making it slower to change from left to right turning.
Rather than fight your middle piston, you could use two pistons in the middle, each attached to only one of the two controllers for left and right. When you turn , retract a single middle piston reducing middle length by half
You didn't have to make it steer from the front side, you could just make it steer from the back wheels which is a lot easier and stronger for these types of vehicles!
Great to see you back on this game! Loved the StreamRoller. Would it be worth adding a resource collector to the back to collect the Haybot bits after you crush them?
you should try making another roller that goes in the back of the vehicle. that way if you miss squishing a bot you'll be able to reverse squish that way your build would be a double threat
Can you stack bearings for more speed? Would removing the middle piston work as it is only really limiting your speed? Would splitting the roller in 2 halves with a freespinning bearing in between allow for some sort of differential steering? Also building your seat above the roller and removing the last set of wheels might allow for tighter turning
This is literally the exact mechanism I tried making AGES ago, and I mean before the devs were announcing Survival was gonna be a thing. I used my cousin's pc (I dont have one yet) and failed. I was trying to replicate a futuristic kind of steering I saw in a video. It was on an actual car, though because of the steering, it couldn't drive. It was simply a concept. I still loved the idea though and wanted to replicate it. On the steering I tried replicating though, instead of pulling one side in, it would push one side out. The wheel well had a flexible, stretchy inside layer whith a hard shell split into hexagons on top, so when it would steer, the shell would separate and you could see the lower layer between the hexagons. Imma try to find that video and link it later. Edit: ok, I was kinda hella wrong, it can drive and it doesnt have a mechanism like this, but how it looks makes it seem kinda like it does. It's the BMW Vision Next 100, which overall is still a phenomenal and incredibly futuristic car, right up there with the Mercedes Vision AVTR. Ok, maybe the AVTR is more futuristic
I do must say that I am a little bit disappointed that there was no Red Crush :( Woc, Haybot and Totebot (and corn, fences, and pile-o-leaves) but at least as a video exit you could have went for a Big Red :( Nice build tho! I remember the big-wheel subaquatic vehicle from way-back-when... :)
I think that can destroy A boss but if you put a cover over the mechanisms because you don’t want your important mechanisms of turning and pushing pistons to get broken
