In today's video, I'm looking at the Valbruch Kaluna Valve Overdrive Pedal.
I'm a big fan of putting overdrive pedals before DSP-based guitar amp processors, I feel by relying on real pedals as opposed to drive effects that are built into these DSP-based units helps with the tone and feel we all associate with plugging into a real guitar amp. Today I'm going to plug in a proper valve-equipped overdrive pedal to see if I can get that bit closer to how my valve amps sound and feel.
Here's what Valbruch says about the Kaluna.
Vahlbruch KALUNA : High Voltage Tube Drive
The Valbruch KALUNA is a new and completely original design featuring an ECC83/12AX7 tube that is 100% pure analog tone! Operating at 250 volts, the dual triode tube circuit is powered by your standard 9V power supply, producing this very particular sweet harmonic content, overdrive clarity, fast pick attack response and complex compression, that we all love from cranked tube amps. The KALUNA is a super versatile, intuitive drive pedal with an extremely open sound that's transparent with great dynamics. The gain characteristics from the KALUNA are organic and three dimensional, delivering mild breakup to creamy saturation.
The KALUNA's unique circuit bears extraordinary touch sensitivity. Every musical nuance generated from your picking attack is exactly reproduced. The post tube, three band tone controls are extremely responsive, which is perfect for tailoring your tone to your specific gear and sound.
The Vahlbruch KALUNA tube pedal definitely sounds different compared to solid state pedals and with its great clarity it will never mask the natural sound of your guitar and amplifier.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Excellent demos on this channel. I cringe at many demos because the guitar is out of tune and the playing is not at my level. You are fully there ad I thank you!

I use the JHS Clover pedal for the same purpose. It is awesome! In my opinion it can even make the cheaper modelers sound a lot better. And since it has an XLR out it is also really useful for tweaking your eq at the end of the chain when you go direct into somebody’s house PA.

Great demo of one of my favorite dirt pedals. I use it into a CAB M+ for home recording, and into a clean-ish tube amp with the band. Never fails to impress.

Years ago people did a similar thing with the Line 6 Flextone amps, putting something valve based in the FX loop to warm them up.

Even at high gain settings, it sounds great! It doesn't get all muddy and flubby and overcompressed. The pick attack was impressive all over! But that might have something to do with the player and the pick. :)

I don't have and digital stuff but this tube OD does act like pixie dust and sounds wonderful! You are a beast of a player, I like to learn licks from you over my morning coffee! Cheers!

Years ago, I had a Digitech GSP5, a very early rackmount multi processor with either "British" or "US" amp simulation. It was OK, but I couldn't get really get that just slightly overdriven, blusey tone I like. In those days, I didn't even have a guitar amp and was just running direct with a powered monitor, or doing recording. I got ahold of a Realtube rack preamp and ran it in front of the processor, which allowed me to get just the tone I wanted. Now days the DSP units are much better, but I can still see where this is a good idea. I also had one of the original Atomic amps for a while, which if you don't know, was basically a 15 watt class A tube power amp with a full range 12" speaker. No tone or volume controls as all that was handled by your DSP unit

That sounded great. I've been using a Wampler Equator in front of my digital processors. It has a volume knob for a bit of drive boost, it's not tube but I believe it does something similar through some quality circuitry. It also has 6 knobs for endless equalization experimentation.

Absolutely stunning, people can get this very cheap I use a beheringer mic pre 100 with a groove tube inside to get the same result just turn the input knob to drive the input signal and go out very conservative this way you drive the tube for harmonic content, and that's like 40 quit to enhance the solid state sound. Good deal indeed! Nice chords though, they sound like Zelda lol.

When adding gain in a Helix , I tend to lower bass for a lead-ish sound.I haven't thought of adding treble instead.I'll have to give this a try.Also adding the Sag and playing with Bias helps with the 'heft' of playing feel.Thanks.

Sounds great, clear and very musical - big question is how does it feel under the fingers, and does it add that feel that playing through valves even at low volumes gives.

Use the old cream machine with a tube in. It sounds similar and you even can drive an amp.

Usually the good valve preamps have 110 v ac (US) but maybe these guys made a design that works good with 9v dc

That sounds very good! Not at all fizzy. At £295, it's not cheap. I'd be interested to hear how it sounds compared to lower cost pedals, and plugged into a decent low wattage solid-state amp. Would it provide the holy grail sound of a cranked valve amp at low volumes?

I might do a vid with a Katana at some point.
@ParaBellum2024
@ParaBellum2024 Год назад
@@TheStudioRats You cannot be _serious!_ Actually, my bias about everything digital aside, that could be a great test: could you use a Katana's built-in effects to get a sound that's identical to the valve pedal? If I can't tell them apart, then maybe I should rethink my attitude.

Hello Paul, could it be that when using a pedal prior to AX effects, for example, you should check the input level to avoid saturating the signal? Thxs
