Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor P71/P7B 2,500 miles into my oil change I drained 1 quart of oil and replaced it with transmission fluid, then I drove for a couple hundred miles. What happened to the oil that came out? Did it clean out the engine? What did I refill with? Will my gas mileage get better? Only time will tell...
By the way, this is NOT a brand new car... it's a 2008 that had, at the time the video was filmed, over 110,000 miles on it

I had an old Mustang that I changed every 1500 miles. I bought it with about 15k miles on it. At 56,000 miles I bought a stroker motor for it. A friend took my factory motor for a project car. He said it still had the factory markings inside the cylinders. So despite the car being driven hard, the engine was "like new"

My grandfather was mechanic always use Marvel Mystery Oil. I've been changing my own oil for almost 40 years. Every vehicle that I have owned or have change the oil in I have always added a half a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and then topped it off with either regular motor oil or synthetic oil. Whether it is a new vehicle for a used vehicle I've always done that. On some of my older vehicles I have used one quart of transmission fluid and topped off with whatever oil I was using for that vehicle. Transmission fluid will not hurt your engine Marvel Mystery Oil will not hurt your engine transmission fluid will not hurt your engine Marvel mystery Oil will not hurt your engine as long as you do not go over the recommended usage amount. If you keep your oil changed at regular intervals you will not have any sludge build-up or discoloration of the oil to the extreme of black or dark brown. Modern vehicles use modern Vehicles use zero 20 or zero 30 synthetic oil and with the additive package that is in the synthetic oil they're should be very little sludge build up if any. I have what is considered 5 new vehicles ranging from 6 years to 6 months old all of them have had regular maintenance and have had regular oil changes with what I have said that I have always done. The oldest vehicle has over 250 thousand miles on it just recently had the valve cover pulled off and it look like it was brand new inside. The mechanic asked if I've had a valve job or the head replaced or head gasket replaced I told him no I just wanted to see what the inside look like and I told him exactly what I do with the oil changes. That vehicle does a lot of highway miles and the oil is changed between 7500 miles and 10000 miles. It runs on 0 20 oil synthetic and a half a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil that is all that has ever been put in there. I would not recommend putting a thickener in there like STP or Lucas and Les you are adding more than a half a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil or transmission fluid to your oil if you're going to be running it for a long period of time. If you do add a thickener to it I would recommend Lucas synthetic and only do a quarter of a quart there is no need to go beyond that. I'm a truck driver I drive big rigs are oil is changed between 20000 miles and 25000 miles which is every 3 months. Being that it is a diesel with a turbo oil is black but on some of the vehicles that I have seen when you pull the valve cover off it is clean inside with a very very light black oily residue which if you take a rag and wipe it off the head is clean. Just remember that the oil packages that are in modern oil now are meant to keep everything clean. If you check your dipstick regularly at 3000 Miles your oil should just start to change color you can run that same oil out to 5000 miles. So if your engine has over a hundred thousand miles every once in awhile you can send a sample out to have it checked and they will tell you if there's any wear or problems going on with the motor. In the past I had an old Ford van that had five hundred thousand miles on the motor when I changed the motor. I was the second owner of that vehicle I personally put 300,000 miles on that motor and did all the oil changes like I have said when I pulled the motor out to change it the inside was clean and there was very little engine wear. I put the new engine in did the proper break in switched over to the Marvel Mystery Oil and motor oil put 100,000 miles on the vehicle and I gave the vehicle away when I moved out of state. I have moved back into California and from time to time I see that van on the road I have talked to the owner and he has not had any mechanical issues with it and changes the oil the same way that I was changing it. Sorry this is so long but this is just an experience I'd like to share with you. One other thing I'd like to mention is we are trying motorkote on a vehicle recommended dosage it is added to the oil every third oil change and the oil changes are using synthetic oil and stretching it out to 10,000 miles. The oil in a vehicle is synthetic but it was something that my son-in-law and myself wanted to try we have put roughly 90,000 miles on the vehicle using the motor code so it has been reapplied 3 times per their instructions. Anyways apologize for this being so long happy Motoring

The compression repair is an oil thickener and Marvel is an oil thinner, they are fighting each other to some extent. If you read the descriptions on the bottles they say some things that are the opposite of the other. Marvel is good for removing sludge, freeing lifters, and similar things, so if that's an issue go for it. The compression repair is about reducing blow by. If you have sludge and blow by then doing several flushes with Marvel then using compression repair with your regular oil changes could be a good way to go. Both at the same time is probably not doing much.

Been doing this for years as a mechanic. Works wonders to neglected engines. It always amazes me how such a simple thing can be so neglected. Had a fleet van in the shop today to check the A/C. I looked up at the oil sticker as i always do, to no surprise it was 14,996 miles past due. Not a drop of oil on the dipstick. Funny enough, the approved the $1,000 A/C repair and said they would change the oil at home.....pure stupidity

Brian Landers - intersting argument. Too bad i don't work for a quick lube facility where untrained people service cars. I own a mercedes. I use mobil syn oils which are designed for the car. I changed it every 15k miles per the manufacturers recomendation. I couldn't agree with you more on proper drain intervals with proper oil. But when vehicles come in for service and the customer hasnt change the walmart brand oil in 15,000 miles on a ford E250.... that is neglect and stupidity. When i changed my valve cover gasket at 170,000 miles due to leaks, the engine is clean inside. I'm sure the vehicle i refrenced in my original comment won't see the same fate.

I drive a 2002 Crown Vic with almost 90,000 miles. Low miles for the year, but still spotless inside the valve covers. Never flushed, just used Motorcraft 5W20 every 3,000 . If you change the oil often and use good oil you won't need to experiment with flushes.
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 5 лет назад
if I had this vehicle from new (or early) and knew that I had done all the oil changes, then yes, I wouldn't do any flushes. But since I got it with almost 100,000 miles and no way to know if maintenance was done properly, and add in over 4,600 idle hours when I got it, hopefully you understand why I wanted to do a "flush"
@simonreeves2017
@simonreeves2017 6 лет назад
Nice video, you certainly pamper your car. Many people ignore how important oil changes are, and car makers don't help by claiming silly oil change intervals - here in the U.K. many makers state 20,000 miles or 2 years - even on diesels, this is nuts if you want the engine to last. Makers don't care, they want to sell you a new one in 3-5 years time. Personally I would only run the engine on the correct grade oil only between changes, and if you change every 3k miles as you say, a flush would not be needed.

The reason that your flush didn't really show any black sludge is because your regular 3000 mile changes have kept your engine internals in really good condition. One negative, be careful when you torque, as soon as it clicks, stop pulling on it. You went another 20 odd degrees. That doesn't seem a lot but it could be 50% more torque. Well done for actually using the correct tool though.
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 4 года назад
remember I got the car used with almost 100,000 miles on it. So I was unsure of the history and if they did change the oil on time or not. I've been changing the oil regularly @ 3,000 mile intervals since I got it though. I'm going to have to look at the video because I always stop the torque wrench when it clicks so I'm wondering if I missed it or if the video just creates the illusion of turning afterward

I always wanted a Jeep, "Universal," from the time I was four years of age and I went to a beach with my parents and saw a metallic blue Jeep CJ-5. It was my goal to own one one day. It went well that the legacy Jeep, "Universals," were manufactured from 1941 to 2006. Thus, achieving my dream vehicle was not as hard as it is for most children. Usually when a child says, "I want that car when I grow up," well, that is all good but most vehicles are out of production in just a few years. The, "Universals," were all similar until 2007. I also have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited JKU as well. The JKU is rather a departure from the traditional, "Universal." But it does have solid live axles and a manually actuated transfer case. I test drove the JL and brought it back from the test drive in less the a kilometer. I am not going to be stuck buying a vehicle with a design flaw like the engine auto stop and start defect. There is no way an engine with that defect is going to last as long as an engine that is allowed to idle and keep the proper oil temperature and the proper oil pressure. I will buy a used JL because the price is lower and I can find a way to bypass the design flaw permanently. But I will not ever buy one new and be forced to pay for that design flaw.

As a gm tech I can tell you how important oil changes are. Its common to replace piston and rings on engines with 60 k due to carbon bound rings....stop letting your oil change light tell you when its time, 3000-4000 miles. All newer engines are like this . I did a job on the side, took the pistons out and soaked them in atf for 24 hours, fixed... Change your oil!!!
@robsorgdrager8477
@robsorgdrager8477 6 лет назад
Sea Life unless its called for by the manufacturer is a waste. I've seen cases where synthetic oil will polish the cylinder walls causing the rings to loose there seal and consuming oil. The trick is to find oil with good amount of zinc. Zinc allows the oil to resist breaking down from being squished and heat. New oils have less zinc and oil intervals have been extended , so you do the math and figure out what " the man " is trying to do. Use normal oil and if you add anything add zinc.
@robsorgdrager8477
@robsorgdrager8477 6 лет назад
Sea Life I ran royal purp in my svt focus engine and it started consuming it after four k. Ford had intervals of 5 k and royal purple reps ( in person ) said I could go 10 k with a filter change a five. That was a high compression engine ( 10.5-1) with oil actuated intake cam timing and piston squirters and oil coolers . I switched to the 5w20 hydrocacked semi syn blend and I could go 5 k before I noticed and consumption loss. In your case that high feature v6 is very sensitive to oil condition . stay with the mobile one and stick to intervals between 4-5 k and if your a short tripper then 3 or 3 months...engine temp is important to allow the moisture to be evaporated out of the oil. Your engine uses oil to lubricate and control timing and keep tension on the timing chains and the oil its self is 60 % or more of the engine cooling . not only does your engine have oil consumption issues it also has oil leaking issues, front cover, oil pan , cam covers, spark plug tubes . also has breather issues, pcv is all in the cam covers and gaskets. When the cam covers fail it will fill the intake tube with oil and turn it to a gewy mess and can suck unmetered air causing all sorts of driveability issues or can push out crank seals or foul induction sensors...moral of the story ... Keep the engine clean inside and out , it starts with fuel ( more important if it direct injected ) new cars don't spray fuel on the intake valves so carbon is a big deal, that carbon ends up in the oil and starts this whole oil issue with the GMs . once a day you should floor the gas pedal and blow the carbon out( like your old man would say " I'm blowing the cob webs out" ). Just maintain the systems and keep things clean, use the car every day and don't be afraid of miles, you can't drive a yard gnome to work and you can't make your car a lawn decoration, if you try you will destroy both .
@robsorgdrager8477
@robsorgdrager8477 6 лет назад
Sea Life sea foam if it works for you then use it. Most problems around oil consumption deal with straight out lack of maint and made worse by the pcv system failing . no there is not a valve on newer engines ( 06 and newerish ) ( four cyl and sixes ) it is a built in channel in the cam cover that contains small restrictions to slow the engine air down to allow the vapor to drop out of suspension . in the cold climate regions they will fill with condensation and freeze either fully restricting or in some cases rupture . trans fluid in the oil is a good practice but fuels have a large detergent package these days and seafoam is more for cars that sit or ATVs . its all about if you have port injection or direct injection . if fuel isn't sprayed upstream of the intake valve then it will never be clean ... If it were up to me I'd run carbs and ethanol with fuel heaters for the winter. Also if your car is flex fuel run a tank through it once a month. It will clean the fuel system better than seafoam. Plus it smells good out the tail pipe.
@robsorgdrager8477
@robsorgdrager8477 6 лет назад
Sea Life just drain and fill, drive it around the block and drain and fill. It will be good after that.
@robsorgdrager8477
@robsorgdrager8477 6 лет назад
Sea Life the plug in the pan is the stand pipe / drip pipe. I can't for the life of me remember where the drain is for that trans. We saw very limited caddys at our dealer and most people do not believe in maint . the only time we would service is when they failed and at that point I would just pop the pans and let em drain. Now that I am at Volvo I have to loose a lot of my gm or any knowledge I had gained so that I may learn volvos systems .

Had a 97 ford explorer that I changed the oil in once. Ever. I rinsed out the filter with gas and slapped it back on. That thing quit counting miles at about 525000 and I drove it for another 4 years after that. It never would die. I gave it away a couple of years ago and I have seen it around from time to time. Used to take it off roading in the spillway and rock climbing in Texas. It had no lift or modifications of any kind. It couldn't go exactly everywhere the modded trucks went and couldn't climb the biggest rocks but more times than not I'd still be slicking right through the mud while those jacked up trucks were outright stuck. Only thing that needed regular changing was fuel system components. Filter, pump, lines. And the O2 sensor! All the time with the freaking O2 sensor. Or whatever the one on the intake is

Your engine recommends 5w 20 oil. You should not any additional additives especially when the first additive you use was about the viscosity of an 90 weight gear oil. The time it takes to pump that thick stuff up through your engine premature wear is already happening. Just take that same money you spent on additives, and just buy a better synthetic oil.

I have an 00 f250 v10 and when I 1st got it I didnt change the oil for about 4 or 5 months and the oil was already dirty from my initial checking of it when I bought it. After the 5th month or so it developed a engine tick on cold starts that was last about 10min or so. I changed the oil and the tick went away BUT about a yr later the tick would be there between 2-3krpms which is the sweet spot that the engine is reving at during normal driving. When towing things it was really awful. I swear i just knew the engine was gonna shoot craps 1 day. Last ditch effort, a few100 miles before I was gonna change oil I added a half qt of ATF. changed the oil after 3 or 400 miles and its been 2yrs and I having heard the tick since. And I only did that process 1 time.

Paully Castallano I don't have a problem with cleaning out the engine that way. I was trying to say and didn't say it right was if you have a fairly new engine you don't need to ever use additives if you run full synthetic oil. One that is old and full of sludge you did need to get the sludge out then will have to use conventional oil and maybe some additives. Don't like additives at all but in some extreme cases you don't have a choice.

The only additive that really works for high mileage engines is Restore it comes in 4-6-8 cylinder formulas and have used it on cars with extreme miles, first car I used it on was 1980 Ford Mustang inline six, had over 300 thousand miles and smoked horribly, blow by Really Bad, I took a chance with the engine Restore and between 3-500 miles it stopped burning Oil and barely any blow by, from Then on I used it every Oil change and the mustang lasted another 3 years till traded it in, but was running perfect when I let it go. Amazing product out of Ft Lauderdale Florida. It does build compression back up. I know one product I won't use is slickk 50 that company had to buy a new engine for a friend of mines brother because main ingredient is teflon and just like on a skillet 🍳 starts to break down from Heat and it clogged up the screen in the oil pump and blew up the engine.

I work in an oil change shop Ppl dont get that no matter how often u change your oil on time or often eventually u gonna need to flush it after 100k or 150k miles. Sludge will be there either from low oil or leaks because its gonna cook the remaining oil in the crankcase. Overheating will cause it. Blow by will do it too. Used cars that u dont no about if they were leased nd ppl dont change it on time or they skip the oil change. Recommended to be flushed so oil passages will be cleared nd sludge wont stick to the internal parts of your engine.
