Disney has confirmed they're making changes to their Disability Access System. This, in an effort to limit or prevent guests from abusing or mis-using the system. The changes may or may not work, but today we'll get into not just what those fixes are, but also why the problem may be worse than they're letting on, how it began, and if maybe Disney is fixing the wrong problem.

@@calebhoward8940 I can't go so far as to be so melodramatic as to say that they "ruined the parks." But I don't disagree that Chapek-era changes have turned the experience of going into something often more grueling than flat-out enjoyable. If Disney doesn't get its head on straight when it comes to guest experience, the ongoing bad PR is really going to take a toll. Hell, it's taking a toll NOW. Being a SoCal resident and long-time Disney parks fan, I now second-guess any thoughts of going, and that never used to be the case.

@@crytsanana3592 They don't ask for documentation because that would be a lawyers dream and they would get sued. The reality is they cannot stop it because anyone can lie. The reality is they made a mistake when they started they decided autism was a valid reason for DAS. If they stuck with the original system where it was only used for guest with mobility problems it was much easier to police. Frankly I don't understand why anyone with a kid with autism that was so extreme they couldn't stand in a line without having a breakdown would be taken to Disneyland... It reminds me of the moronic parent that took their kid to see a Dora the Explorer live show when the kid was so far gone he started freaking out and screaming non-stop as soon as the show started. I know everyone wants to think their kids can do anything... but reality is some cannot.

That's the detail that does concern me a bit. I doubt anybody is going to be banned for doing it the first time, at least not at first. They'll probably have DAS pass access revoked and be warned that if they do it again that there'll be a permanent ban. The reason I say that is that it's probably going to take a bit of time in order to figure out just how accurate the process is for identifying fakes as some of these conditions are going to have significant minorities of people where reasonable medical professionals differ in their opinions.

The core issue here really is the ridiculous lines at Disney and well really just money. They have every ability and clearly the technology needed to keep everyone out of the queue if they wanted. They wont do this, because long lines deter usage and this allows them to pack their park with far greater attendance than they should be allowed to. Whether it is possible or not, every person that pays for a ticket "expects" that they will be able to ride every single ride in the park. They believe "this" is what they are paying for, when in fact they are just paying for the "chance" to ride every single ride. The difference here is being slightly exploited by Disney. They have they technology to schedule rides on every single ride (this "is" DAS as it exists). They experience is significantly better with DAS than without. If you could buy DAS how much would you pay? I would easily pay twice the cost of current Genie+ for the "privilege". This also just highlights that at the core this isn't a "cheating" issue its a "money" issue.
@agentmaine8126
@agentmaine8126 2 месяца назад
Another issue is how bad of a rip off Genie Plus fast lane is. Once you use it on a ride your unable to use it on that same ride for the rest of the day, They act like people don't like to re ride the same.rides in one day. The previous system would allow this and was roughly the same price, so now they Decreased the value but maintained the same price
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 месяца назад
@@agentmaine8126 I have a lot of issues with the Genie+. It's just too complicated and unless you're absolutely set on running your entire day around the Genie+ wait times, you can wind up getting very little for your money. As expensive as the Universal equivalent is, you know what you're getting. You will get to use it on every covered ride and attraction and the only way to not to get to use it, is if you leave it until too close to closing time to sit through the much shorter waits. But, really, Disney should just bring back fastpasses, give everybody that comes some limited number of them per day and it would take a lot of pressure off the DAS and Genie+ to accommodate too many people. They can probably still charge for Genie+, it might just come in the form of additional fastpasses at a time, or having a set number that are set aside until the last minute.

It's so sad when things like DAS need to become harder for people who really need it to use it, because of people who misuse it. I experienced DAS for the first time last summer when traveling with my niece with Down Syndrome, and her dad, who has a traumatic brain injury. It was such a big help for them, and we were grateful that it allowed us to still experience rides with them. BUT, I will say that, while DAS was a vacation saver for this family, it was still more difficult experiencing the park with their disabilities than my family usually experiences with lightning lane or just standing in line. In other words, while DAS is wonderful for guests with disabilities, those same disabilities still make their vacations more difficult. This just makes me more angry at people who misuse it just to save some money.

What’s being abused are families who can’t afford to pay for Genie plus. As someone who requests DAS under my physical issues, I do not feel comfortable outing myself otherwise. Especially after speaking to a CM tonight, who while wonderful, had zero medical training or understanding. The CM asked why I don’t purchase a walker to use while in the parks- that’s what the collapsible cane is for. I have multiple physical issues that aren’t readily apparent. I have never used other issues I have because, again, I do not feel comfortable outing myself. I can imagine that there are plenty of others who feel similar. If there is no training, does that mean that they will move to a functional/nonfunctional sliding scale that is up to a CM that may not understand the nuances of neurodivergence and disabilities?

Instead of accusing these new DAS users of being people looking for a loophole, Disney should also recognize that their previous FastPass system was also another free accommodation for people with disabilities. The increase in DAS users correlates with the termination of the FastPass system because more people with disabilities were able to access the park/rides without asking for specific accommodations from DAS. Now that FastPass is gone, some of those people are seeking DAS assistance.
@tjtennisicmroll2k
@tjtennisicmroll2k 2 месяца назад
Disability has a very specific legal definition and so does reasonable accommodation. There is no such thing as a free accommodation legally, only reasonable accommodations under the ADA, which Disney can choose what kind of reasonable accommodation to provide, but they only have to provide one if someone requests it and provides the proper documentation showing that the person an a disability which affects a major life activity and what that disability prevents them from doing. Only then, can Disney know what options it has to allow that person to use the facilities. People don't have a right to choose their reasonable accommodation, they have to accept or reject the one that is offered to them.

The previous fast pass was also superior to this rip off version. I paid for the last one as part of the max pass, and I could fast pass the same ride more than once in one day, but now I can only use it once for each ride per day but still pay the same price. It's basically a rip off
@davidiwolf

That’s exactly the case. Five years ago, max pass was a thing. People used that instead of DAS as it helped in the same way. If Disney would just allow genie+ as a magic key add-on for a flat fee for the whole year, I’d just pay for that instead of messing with DAS. But there’s no way I feel that $60/day for my wife and I to get on rides is reasonable.

@@tjtennisicmroll2k You are 100% incorrect. It is illegal to charge any kind of fee for a disability accommodation. I mean really, how could you get such a basic thing so wrong? You are also incorrect about choosing accommodations. You can't turn a disabled person away just because you don't want to provide that particular accommodation. It has to be a HARDSHIP to the company to provide for ANY requested accommodation. People who feel entitled because you are now paying an additional fee for something you "used to get for free" are also the problem. Times change. Businesses change. If you don't like those changes, you don't go. When I took my young children and grandchildren to the Parks, they didn't want to wait in the lines either. My grandmother could only ride a couple of rides a day because of long queues. This is what it is. Everyone knows the situation going in. People who need REAL assistance SHOULD be assisted. Disney can look at each disability and decide what is a reasonable accommodation, a reasonable accommodation can be anything which allows a person with a disability to be able to use the facilities, in this case it sounds like allowing a line skip or allowing you to wait in line in a wheelchair would both be reasonable accommodations, you do not have a legal right to get the reasonable accommodation of your choice, you just have a legal right to a reasonable accommodation of Disney's choice. That being said, many will argue that an accommodation that Disney chooses is not reasonable in their specific case, that is why it is always safer legally to give people the accommodation that they are asking for.

Is that to account for the additional time required to stand in the lightning lane once checked in?
@raytheflyingsquirrel12
@raytheflyingsquirrel12 2 месяца назад
From what I understand, that’s to account for the time they’ll spend in the LL line when they return to the ride. A lot of times the LL wait is more than 10 min so the DAS holder ends up waiting longer than a standby queue guest. Plus, a lot of times the posted wait time is longer than what actual queue is so that 10 min helps balance that out.
@ohana8535
@ohana8535 2 месяца назад
@@mrswhite808 No, it was because you used to have to go to kiosks to get the wait time signed on to a card. They took the 10 minutes off to account for the time it took to walk to the ride. I believe there are people who still use paper, so that is likely why it is still there.

As a DAS holder, I disagree. With a disability, that 10 minute window can turn into more when you are going a diferent route, taking longer to get in to or out of a ride vehicle, etc. I have mobility as awell as neurological issues and the DAS has made it possible fo rme to visit at all. While I don't alway sneed an ECV (depend son the day and flareups) I always end up renting one for my own psychological well being, too. The ECV helps provide a social buffer the the corads don't give you without one. IT's hard to explain. But, I while I look like I have mobility issues (which I do), I don't 'look' like I'm on the spectrum... until I do, and I come off as a lunatic. Just ask those poor cast members at the tiki room who stared at me in confusion when lost it after I was given 4 different instructions about where to park my ECV. I was fed up that they kep making me move and one of them ended up telling me I had to transfer and sit on the bench, smashe dup against strangers and they had to move my ECV out since another one was in there -- mind you that second one came in after I did and between me driving all the way down the ramp and around the back...where they told me to go! I felt so bad, but I'd had enough and I just screamed for them to stop talking at me and I drove off and away. I spent the next hour in a corner having a panic attack and recovering while my sister tried to keep people from getting too close. Anyone who knows me or looks at me wouldn't think I'm on the spectrum, but I am, and it got worse after a TBI when I had a bad car accident a few years ago, when I was almost killed by a drunk driver (hence the mobility issues). All that said, manueving around the parks in an ECV is NOT a time saver, on any level. it often takes much longer than the posted standby time for me. That part about these new rules that I don't like are that they are creating different classes of disabilities. DAS accomodations are free. Mobiliy accomodations are not. That's my issue. Even on days I may not 'need' the ECV, I end up renting one anyway for my sanity. I think that's pretty cruddy considering I'm also an INspire Key holder and I spend tons of money in the parks. My mobility disability isn't accomodated at all, frankly.

Disney seems to forget that there’s other reasons that people rely on DAS. I’m diabetic and take a drug called jardiance. It’s a great drug that helps to control my blood sugar, but the side effect is that I need to use the restroom every 45-60 minutes. I can wait in a short queue, but if I want to go on space mountain, by the time I’m ready to ride, I’m also ready to use the restroom again. So, either I disrupt everyone and leave/return and get dirty looks for jumping the queue, disrupting everyone along the line - or I just wait for the ride not in the queue, and I can use the restroom just before I get on the ride. I can now enjoy the ride, and I’m not disrupting everyone else in line. I don’t look disabled at all. I look healthy, and I’m sure I get side eye from people wondering why I have DAS. But, I, and many others like me, use it to make our days more pleasant, and to not disturb everyone else in line over and over again during the day. Not everyone with disabilities looks like they’re disabled. And, it’s not only autistic kids that can’t wait in a line.

Having to use the restroom on a 45 minute frequency is a stretch to characterize as a “disability”. Yes, you will likely lose your DAS privileges because you are able to stand in line and wait. And by watching fresh baked regularly, you would know to be at the parks early in order to maximize your time in lines. Surely you’ve seen the episode where David walked on 5, 6 popular attractions in a row? It can be done and I think you already know that. To be honest Disney has done better than 20 years ago when they would flat out look at my little brother with Autism and say "i dont see anything wrong with him" and dismiss out of hand. But with DAS constantly having to be renewed (as if Autism is going to magically disappear with Tinkerbells fairy dust) to the way they handle wagon strollers for kiddos on the spectrum. I feel it’s understandable to have to reregister if you haven’t been there in a certain amount of time or if the party has changed. You can do it online before you go with a video chat and they let you sign up for your first two rides. The rides have to be in the same park. That might be a better way for some. They’re also putting the registration spot in some of the ticket booths so you can take care of it before entering the parks and then when you enter you can just go wherever you need to go. Great video as always! As someone that uses DAS for an invisible issue, DAS has been a game changer in the way I enjoy the parks. But I think another reason for the uptick isn’t exactly the cost of Genie (though that’s part of it), but more the limitations of the system when it comes to re-ride ability. Some DAS users on the neurodivergent spectrum will sometimes have a singular attraction that is their special interest and is the only ride they want to revisit during their stay throughout the day. Because the old FP didn’t limit how many times you could go on a singular ride, and neither does DAS, that might be a huge reason for the increase for families who didn’t necessarily see the benefits of DAS in the first place. I personally think if Disney adjusted Genie+ to have an unlimited ride option (like Universal), the DAS numbers would go WAY down. But that’s just me.

I have a severely autistic child, with a serious seizure disorder. We went together as a family in 2021, right as they were letting people in without the mask restrictions, as my son can't wear a mask (he would eat them). So we were excited because in the past using the DAS pass we would sign up for a ride then after the hour or so, we would go through the exit and get right on the ride. In fact we could always time it so when our friends and family waited in the normal cue, we were able to get on roughly about the same time. It was great for our family. But then after 2020, they changed the DAS pass so we wait the normal wait time away from the line, then when we returned we had to stand in the lightning lane line which was an additional 20 min to an hour before going on the ride. And my son can't stand in a line for more then 1 min. without screaming at the top of his lungs making everyone around us jump, and he gets super violent if we try to keep him in one place for too long. We do put him in a large wheel chair stroller as he is also a flight risk. So lines are absolutely impossible for us. So we would try and would have to leave because the lightning lanes were so long. So I just sat in secluded corners of the park the whole day waiting for my husband and the rest of my children enjoy the park. We realized after that trip that we just can go back. It is great for disabled people that can wait in a lightning lane line for 20 min to an hour, but it prevents those who truly cannot stand in lines. So sometime the answer is you just can't go. It was a hot and crowded that day, and I cant imagine putting my son or myself through that again.

The last 2 years we have used a DAS for our son in addition to our genie+ purchase. Our family has never experienced a genie+ line anywhere close to an hour long wait. Most are in the 10 to 20 minute range. There have been a handful of times the wait stretched to around the 30 minute range but those were generally due to the ride going down fairly recently or from an influx of DAS pass returns much past the initial return time, like right after a parade or right before closing.

As mentioned, the threat to bar DAS abusers has always existed. The ability to enforce such a threat is nearly nonexistent. They are just making it a bit harder to get a DAS, not easier to detect or punish a DAS abuser. Autism is specifically stated as an example of a qualifying disability. Well, autism is a spectrum. In fact, autism is within a broader category of neurodivergence. Short of a doctor's note listing the diagnosis (which is still not required in the changes), who can identify a person with neurodivergence in a short online video chat? A doctor certainly wouldn't; the medical evaluation for such diagnoses is quite extensive and can require hours of testing. All it takes is incorrectly barring one DAS user to have a huge legal headache on your hands, especially when the evaluation process for DAS makes no requirement for medical documentation.

But put in a fast pass system, offer 50 fast passes for every 10 mins. 50 people from standby and 50 people walking in with passes get on the ride every 10 minutes. You can tell your standby people how long they're waiting if you know half the places are going to passes. That's with a set limit, half the places are available to passes every 10 mins. If you take away that limit, and anyone who buys a pass can get on the ride ahead of the standby line, they might be waiting hours for a gap in the traffic to get on the ride! Lightning Lane is obviously a lot more complicated than that, it does have a limit, it can sell out, but it doesn't seem like it's anywhere near is balanced and regulated as the older systems were.

@@ItsameBS so it’s my belief they would limit how many guests could get a fastpass for a said hour when a limit was hit they go to the next hour and so on, so example when Toy Story Mania was brand new by 8 pm they were completely sold out of fast passes on the original fastpass system because throughout the day people got fast passes each hour, so if it a lot of people used it they wouldn’t tell you come back in an hour it could tell you come back 2 hrs later 3 hrs later and so on. I believe they used to have a limit of how many people could get a fastpass each hour. With lightning lane since people are paying for it there’s no limit and now both the standby and lighting lanes lines are well over an hour, Disney doesn’t care because people are paying for it.

Thanks for the coverage of this. We have a Downsyndrome grandson and have used this in the past. It saddens me that people would "cheat" the system but it also saddens me that Disney now charges for fastpasses. We are going again in June. Still love it!

The percentage of guest that purchase genie plus is around 40-50% average price per park $20 Why not consider getting rid of genie plus and just spread the cost 💲 to everyone on the daily entry fee. Disney would still get its revenue while making it more enjoyable for guests to visit the parks, and as a bonus if they choose, they can then reinstate the paper fast pass as a way of giving something back to guests for Free.

Wow! Very interesting. We were just there over Easter and actually tried applying for the DAS for our son. He has ADHD and can have issues standing still or being stagnant. The wait time to speak with a cast member before the trip was well over 3 hours most days and we were NOT able to get the DAS pass. I decided to just do Genie+ and it worked out fine for us. However we had a party of 5 people, mom/dad, 2 kiddos, and grandma. So Genie+ was a little steep price point. I'm happy to say our son did great and the longest line we waited in was maybe 40-45 minutes. Maybe the problem is with the interview process, maybe the restrictions should be more strict. If Disney gave the DAS pass to someone then they should accept the responsibility for handing out the pass. Maybe they're too relaxed on whom receives it. Genie + only goes so far though. Especially when you have to pay extra for rise and racers...

My son is autistic and its unfortunate so many ppl are abusing it. DAS has changed Disney for my family as before we knew about DAS, we would have to avoid entire sections of parks because my son would want to go on certain rides but wait times were too long. Universal has the IBCCES Accessibility Card, where you have to submit official medical documents. I like that because I don't have to explain every 2 months to an employee my son's challenges. I even tried showing a Disney Cast member and they said they are not allowed to ask for it.

I have been able to use DAS for the past few Disney vacations and it has been so wonderful. I see it as a request, not an entitlement and all this verbage about "abuse" of the system freaks me out as someone with invisible issues. People with DAS end up waiting for their return time + the wait in the LL queue so in my eyes we end up waiting longer than anyone. Disney is allowed to deny more people but in my case it would make me probably plan a trip elsewhere, as much as I love the parks.

I believe it is important to address the DAS system as it can be abused by many if they so choose. One interesting comment is that on your last video on Knotts of Fast Lane is it needed or is the $100 worth it. The clear answer was yes with how long the wait times were. Especially if you were trying to get onto rides. When is come to Disney, if you are wanting to get on rides, Genie + is a definite must these days. But one thing that should change is the ratio of Standby (More) guests to Genie+, DAS, VIP or any other skip the line. This would greatly improve the Standby Guest experience. As a user of Genie+, waiting 10 to 20 minutes in a Lightning Lane Line is OK. They should also raise the price of Genie+, they get the same revenue, fewer buyers, thus standby moves faster as well. We will see how this all works out in the end.

Part of the reason Genie Plus Lines are long are also ride closures Hyper SM, was down for 2 hours when I went so the line for Genie Plus was 45 Mins because of the back up. While I'm sure DAS abuse doesn't help, I think ride closures are the bigger reasons for back up since many rides I see keeps letting you get a time even if the ride is down

It’s nice to have someone with you in the park when you have a drop, especially if it’s a stubborn low-and the person traveling with you would most likely know at least some of the ins and outs of your co-morbidities (if you have any) or where your glucagon is and how to administer it.

She does not use a walker or chair and occasionally visits the park with just her sister who also has mobility issues so ride swap is not really an option. This will definitely be an issue. Mega greedy executives now charging for rides AS WELL as charging admission. We came to the US last November from Australia. Usually we spend a month in Anaheim and go to Disneyland every second dayish. This time we spent a month in pigeon forge and did the sites and Dollywood. We also did universal and Knotts. ZERO DISNEY. This is what you have done Disney with your greed and your horrible reservation system. We spent 50,000 Australian dollars in the US (23,000+ US dollars) and for the first time in 30 years not one cent of that went to a Disney park or downtown Disney. Disney doesn't seem to care about guests or offering a friendly, premium guest experience anymore. I don't mind paying if the experience is outstanding. Disney lost the magic by being greedy and weird with their messaging.

Enjoy myself. We don’t go on a lot of rides, but it’s nice to have the pass so I don’t have a freak out why I’m standing in line but yet they want to take it away from us that really needed. I understand people who are abusing it but people like us really need it, it really hurts us at the point continuing my annual pass because that’s the only way I’m able to go and enjoy myself on certain rides and feel good about it now for those people that need it like us are being stripped and they’re limiting rides that you can no longer get return times on and also DCA is not doing return timesfor the DAS pass it just sucks universal has been such a blessing to me and it helps me out when I have their special pass.

My daughter has several challenges that make it difficult to wait in line for her, but I’m afraid these restrictions will make it more difficult for people who need it. I use DAS with my autistic son (age 6) when I take him by myself to the park. This way I am not stuck by myself taking care of one of his fits in the middle of a 45 minute line. But I ALSO pay for Genie. So if the issue is abuse of not paying for Genie I guess that is a way to show we are genuine. I have always offered in the interview to show his school documents showing his eligibility since it’s hard to see his autism on the outside, but I believe it’s against the law for them to ask for it. The system is god sent for me to be able to have a great day at the parks. I am able to walk away to a quiet spot for him to decompress without compromising a spot in line for a ride that he loves and is probably having a fit cuz he can’t comprehend why it’s not our turn.

As an autistic patent of an autistic child, I am fully aware of folks with legitimate diagnoses who REALLY don't need to be using the DAS system but do anyway. Their children are disabled, but the way their disability manifests does not at all affect their ability to wait in a line... but they use it anyway. If Disney can ask a wheelchair user to wait in a normal queue, these people are capable of boredom. It is absolutely 100% abused and will absolutely continue to be even under the revamp.

Great breakdown as usual! While I agree with you that the main reason Disney is doing this is to get more revenue out of genie plus I’m also absolutely relieved. I’ve been going to Disneyland with my youngest brother who has severe autism and is non verbal since 1996. While the DAS system has changed over the past two decades the abuse has never been this bad, cast members will frequently apologize to me as I guide my brother into the attraction because of the wait. We do the virtual interview before going to WDW for food and wine festival every year since fastpass plus was done away with and it’s a quick/easy process! I’m hoping the threat of trespass really does make folks think twice about stealing this service and time from these kids who really need it to enjoy the parks.

I wondered about this and is most likely rampant and is correlated with start of LL.
