Answering the burning questions you guys have about the Ninja 400.
G’day guys! I’m Kwackajack and I ride a 2019 Kawasaki Ninja 400. Lately I’ve been making my way through the list of countless questions that I receive about my bike here on the channel and answering them to the best of my abilities. Some questions are easy, like how is it on the highway, how fast is it and so on. But one that I often get which can sometimes puzzle me is ‘Will I get bored?’.
What you guys want to know is if you’ll get bored of the engine, outgrow the bike or I dunno, just like be riding around not enjoying yourselves? So in today’s video I’m gonna answer these burning questions and give you my honest opinion.

I went from a 150 to a 1000 to a 600 to a 250. Now I'm on a 650. All I know is that it's more fun to ride a slow bike FAST, rather than riding a FAST bike slow.....

I’ve had my 300 since 2016 and I still love it it’s dumb to me that so many ppl get bigger bikes so quickly when they don’t know how to really rip it on the 300 ….

I think it's a lot about riding style too, personally I prefer to hit the twisties where you won't be able to use all the power anyways. Plus the ninja is comfortable enough to do long trips.

I agree, however the seat is really uncomfortable on long rides especially if you have a boney butt. I usually start feeling it after one and a half or two hours of riding. I know kawasaki make a thicker, higher, mode comfortable seat, but I don't know how effective it is

I come from much much larger displacement sport bikes and love my 2020 400 ABS. Probably the most fun bike I’ve owned excluding highway fun. That’s not to say it’s no good on the highway, just not a top speed toy. Love it. 10yr+ riding experience prior to buying the 400.

I have a 2020 Ninja 400 and can honestly say, you couldn’t ask for a better beginner bike. I love mine honestly. I am looking to upgrade to try new things out, but when it comes to curvy roads and a comfortable ride, the 400 is the way to go. Power is nice. Easy to ride and a lot of fun!

You will get used to the acceleration, period. But that probably goes for any bike eventually. What doesn't get boring is how the ninja400 is light, you can run the gears, it's easily maneuverable, cheap to service/maintain, cheaper to insure, and fun to flick into the twisties. It is quite comfortable compared even to R7 or other "less aggressive bikes" in the sport bike category. I still hate the smaller rear tire on summer roads with loads of tar snakes. Awesome video! The Ninja 400 is incredible. Had a 2019 in red as my first bike that I wasn’t even close to getting bored of. But I had an extremely unfortunate incident occur when I hit a deer (they are absolutely everywhere in my area) late last May and totaled it. My 400 was resilient enough to do me one last favor and kept me upright the entire time; so no injuries. Even managed to ride her home after the accident. I’m upgrading to a Ninja 650 now, but will forever recommend the 400 as a first bike to anyone looking for this type of ride. Can’t wait to see what your next upgrade will be.

@Michael Sullivan ninja 650 is like 10% faster. I wouldn't even call it an upgrade unless it's just for touring. Ninja 400 is an absolute beast in the twisties or on the track.

After owning much bigger cruiser and touring bikes for years I bought a 2023 Ninja 400. Far and away the most challenging and engaging ride I’ve ever experienced. I’ve learned more and have had more fun on this bike than any of my previous bikes. I also appreciate that the Ninja is easier to get on a stand, cheaper to maintain, and much faster to detail than my previous bikes. Better still, it’s awesome on the freeways and country roads in my area. I’m 6’ at 220 and have no problem getting through freeway traffic. Thanks for your informative videos that closed the deal for me on getting this bike!

First time rider with a Ninja 400 2022. I love how light it is and how easy it is to lean. Almost like my bicycle when I was a kid. But can hit highway speeds and pass most things on the road.

I just bought a brand new 400 KRT. My first sport bike. I wanted something light, good on gas, and yet has enough power if needed. I’m 50 years old, so let’s see how this goes. Yes, I’ve rode other bikes for years. Mostly smaller displacement dual sports. Should be fun!!

The 400 is a great bike! I have a 19 in all black, and also have a CBR954RR and CBR929RR. The 400 is a great bike and is extremely reliable and fun to ride. It is a bit light and it struggles on the highway when it comes to easily overtaking cars and dealing with winds. With that said, it’s very beginner friendly and easily able to dip into corners without any problems. Due to the lack of excessive power this bike is also very forgiving when it comes to making mistakes with throttle control. I love my 400 but I will admit I don’t ride it as much and I have grown bored of it. I prefer the power and riding position of super sports over the 400 but I can and still have so much fun on the 400. It never fails to put a smile on my face when I ride it honestly.

I just got a 2022 z400. It's not a beginner bike, it's an awesome bike. One of those bikes you'll always miss once you part ways with it. I was worried it wasn't going to be enough bike for me but it's way more bike than you think it is. If you're considering buying it, do it!

Love my ninja, i went from a old cbr600 to a new ninja 400 and I wasn't disappointed, it's not as powerful or fast but it's still fun as hell and I don't have issues keeping up with my buddies

Had my Ninja 300 for 2 years. Loved it, and was not maxing out the skill potential the bike had as a ride. But I upgraded to an R6. Not because I needed more power. I wanted more power. I wanted a ,imo, a better looking bike. I wanted supersport ergo's. I wanted a 16k RPM redline (although only really touch that in 2nd). Are these logical arguments? No , they are not. But as a motorcyclist, I feel that the emotional reasons are just as important. As long as you can keep youself safe.

My first bike was a 2016 Ninja 300. I loved it, but I abused the shit out of it. Not on purpose, I just was 100% self taught and it was rough at first. I’m very happy I had it and learned to ride on it. I had to get rid of it when my daughter was born, and not having a bike for 5ish years really broke my heart. I just picked up a new N400 yesterday and I feel complete again. They are amazing little bikes. My dream bike is a GSXR 600, but I’m gonna cut my teeth on the little Ninja for a few years before I get it. I’m old enough now to know that I’m not invincible.

I got my 2021 Ninja 400 new and I’ve put several thousand miles on it. I hate to admit it, but I’m a street squid. I love popping wheelies, I love putting a knee down in the twisties, I love pulling from every red light, but damn I want to do highway wheelies, I want to do more than 113mph on the highway, and I want to do highway pulls. I love this bike, but I want the stock street stunted that is the xsr900. The only thing I’ll be missing out on is the knee down in the twisties for awhile. I think you can outgrow the 400 if you’re a douche on the street like me. Also, I do find the N400 to be a bit uncomfortable in the ergonomics department for my size (6’3” and 205lbs). If you’re not a street squid and you’re not a bigger person, you’ll love this bike!

This was very nice to watch. Real funny. I also started on a Ninja 400 and used it for a year before i changed to a CBR600RR and six months later, wished i stayed longer on the Ninja to learn more. I enjoyed watching your video man...subbed

Great perspective on smaller bikes. In the past I have had all manner of bikes from old brits to German tourers to Japanese missiles. Then kids came along. Now the kids are growing up and one has a bike of his own. Time to get back on the road. Despite having an unrestricted licence I decided on an A2 bike for my lad to grow in to when the time comes and to ease myself in gently. So I opted for the naked Z400. And in the two months I’ve been back on the road I can honestly say I have never had so much fun on a bike. Being able to exploit the engine to the full coupled with awesome flick ability I can really enjoy the twisties without dancing with my own mortality. Now I’m not saying a bigger more powerful bike won’t be in my garage at some point but I’m in no hurry and can’t wait until the next ride. Stay safe folks.

@@treybirdo7223 : To give some context of my evaluation, I was placed in the intermediate level. I've done several track days now. It's been perfect for me. At my skill level, I don't believe I could've chosen a better bike to start doing track days with. I've even crashed a couple of times. Not having a lot of power allows me to focus on my form and technique. But at the same time, it has enough power to make you respect it. I'm really glad I didn't start on a bigger bike. Especially glad I wasn't on a bigger bike when I crashed the first time. Thing is tough as nails too. All I've had to replace from the 2 crashes was a left riser & a left rear set. I would highly recommend it for any beginner, novice & intermediate level track day rider. I will say though that it seems like once you start getting into mid-to-upper-intermediate level, you are probably going to want a little bit more power by then. You can usually hang in the corners with the bigger bikes, but at times they will blow by you on the long straights. But don't get me wrong, on the flip side I've gone by plenty of guys on bigger bikes when the track tightens. I get a kick out of going by the bigger bikes. I'm just focusing on my technique, form and carrying corner speed. Those are my top priorities. Honestly, power shouldn't even be a concern or issue until you start approaching advanced level. I'm going to finish up this season, and do the 2022 season with it. If things go well, I will probably move on to something a little bit stronger after that. But not much stronger. Perhaps a Yamaha R7. Doing track days has made me realize that most riders don't even need a really powerful bike. Honestly 99% of riders in the advanced level can't even extract the full potential out of a 600 on the track. Definitely been an eye opening experience.

I started on a 2018 ninja 400 and then 12 months later 6k miles later I upgraded to the 636. The 400 is a great bike I really enjoyed it and never got bored of it but with a slip on since its 2 cylinders it sounds like crap. I've always wanted a 636 and got the 400 just to learn. But if I had enough money to keep the 400 and buy the 636 I would've owned both but since I could've only had 1 I traded for the 636

I have my 2018 Ninja 400 for three seasons now and 'no' I am not bored of the bike. It has more than enough power to get you into trouble with the law, pass on the highway, get out of situations should the need arise. The ergonomics are good however not great, I'm 6'2" 240lbs so not likely the target audience for this machine. The seat is not that comfortable for long rides which can be fixed. The position for spirited riding is not ideal because the bars are raised. The position for cruising is not ideal because the bars aren't raised enough (at least for me) so it's in a weird sort of no mans land in that regard. The bike looks great and I have received many compliments from people and overall have been very happy with the purchase. Learned a lot about what I want in a bike and don't want in the future. It has been a great tool to learn on and grow in my riding journey.

As per my other review....you sold me. I'm going to make the deal in couple days. Just a recap...My first bike was a 2002 ZX7R which I rode for 10yrs. I only bought it because it was a good deal. I never needed the power. I never unleashed the power (left that to my much experienced husband who rides an unrestricted ZX10R & far too many years under his belt). However, in 12 years I've never ridden anything smaller than a 600cc. I've been convinced that the 400 is all I really need for my style of riding and I highly doubt I will get bored of it. Thanks for the review & everyone's comments that helped me see things from a different perspective.

I sold my ninja 400 2 months ago i did upgraded to a bigger bike. I needed more power but i learned everything on my 400. I had a lot of fun as a beginner on it

Im an Aussie aswell and also in the 400 club, The Ninja 400 is the first bike I've ever owned and I have recently gone to my P's. This bike is AMAZINGLY easy to control and I don't feel unsafe or like it has more power then I can handle. But it definitely has enough power if you open it up to have a very good time. Also when you get the revs over 10k RPM she sounds so beautiful!

Completely agree, it was the first bike I ever rode on the road after my Learners course so I literally learnt to ride from scratch with it. Do you find there's a fair bit of wind buffering on the highway? I mentioned that in my video on the Ninja 400 on the Highway due to the overall lightness of it

Thank you for this video. Living in Viet Nam, I don't think a 400cc engine will bore me. I considered a bike with a large engine, but my friends and I agree - I'd never get the opportunity to use the engine to its fullest abilities. Road conditions aren't predictable enough to open a large engine and traffic patterns in town are too unpredictable. Such is why I'm considering a Ninja 400 or Yamaha MT03.

Think the question is related to where the pilot lives too, like if they're surrounded by straight highways and relatively flat geographical area, I think they will def. outgrow it fast and get bored simply due to the region they are in, needing something that gives the beans on a drag style push.

I was gonna get a ninja 400 earlier this year but some complications arose, but I’ll be buying one either next month or in September. I’m not a huge huge motorcycle geek, I just need something to get me from A to B in a timely manner. 400 has everything I need personally, I won’t be doing track days or races. Anything bigger can’t be rode to its fullest **legally** on the road anyway. Think once I get the bike I’ll be hanging on to it until I’m too old to ride anymore. Love the design of the 400. One I’ll be getting might be a teal one but I’ll most likely put on a few mods to make it feel a bit more personal

I have a 2023 Ninja 400. Yes, you'll outgrow it so quickly. Then see that could've bought a used 636 for almost the same price but near triple the horsepower + it has traction control and other electronic upgrades(if you buy a later model). Will you get bored of the 636? Not for a long time mate. Don't get the 400 if you're looking to go fast, if you just want to be a putt around town guy, go for it

The only problem I have with smaller engined motorcycles (< 600cc) is the stress that is put on the engines at highway speeds. High revs for a long periods arent good for engines.

I suppose, but as I mentioned in my highway riding vid, my 400 sits around 6.5k on the highway quite comfortably. I suppose a much higher CC bike would be a lot lower in the top gears though?

The 400 is not stressed at all on the hwy. I easily cruise at 80 mph with more go juice if I want to pass some one.

I don’t think I’ll get bored with mine, even though the power delivery isn’t AS exciting as when I got it, I’m still quicker than 95% of cars on the road. I’m not a top speed guy anyways, I like the twisties.

If you’re bored on a 400 then you aren’t on the right roads. Take one of those “boring” bikes into a canyon or mountain road, especially the sorts with tight technical turns, yup, now THAT’s perfection. 👌

I still got bored lol, I upgraded to r6 then r1 now paningal v4 and I can take the twisties just as good as I could with a r4 and keep up with friends, although I might be different bc I do ride competitively but still I don't get the twisties argument, you can easily do everything in 600 that you could do Ina 400

A Kawasexy Ninja 400 2023 will be my next bike. From KTM 200 to Ninja. In just a matter of months. Don't need a 650 don't ride that fast so for me it's fine. Just need something to ride with enough power, light and got the technology I wanted. Can flat foot and bit upright. Cheers!

One thing that I have noticed is the people who say “I need a 600cc or Liter bike” are fools. The balls these guys have, these same people do not go over 100 no more than I do on my 400. Realistically people who crash and die on 600 and Liter bikes die around the same basic speed as everyone else. (70-90mph) it’s an ego and money thing. Yes bigger bikes are fun and fast but who realistically is pushing these bikes to the fullest potential everyday? Not unless you go to the track Four days out of the week. And don’t you notice the bigger bike riders don’t start out like douche bags but become one…

This was a interesting video for me, I bought a 2019 Kawasaki Z400 (basically the standard version of the Ninja 400) last year for my starter bike. So far I have been having a blast, its nimble, gives me enough power, and its not an intimidating bike to ride (it also made me realize I hate chain bikes). I know it wont be my forever bike (I like cruisers more) but its an amazing bike for its price. My only gripe with the bike? Its not the most comfortable bike to ride for my height. I at 6'2 am too a tad too tall, it makes me feel cramped most days. Otherwise, its been great. I know I wont keep it forever, but that's okay. I'll learn a lot from this bike, and in a couple of years I'll change it out for something that suits me better.

I have had my Ninja 400 for 2 and a half years. Just bought myself a 2021 Z900. I hopefully pick it up on Friday. I use the Ninja daily for commuting and for weekend fun rides. I am still not bored of it to be honest. The only reason why I am upgrading is just like you said, it's time to try some other flavours. I have always preferred the look of naked bikes so that's what I am getting. Good content mate!

I bought this bike 6 months ago brand new and I’ve put 11,000 miles on it in that time. The ninja 400 has enough power. It feels fast. You don’t get bored especially if you practice cornering. Am I planning to upgrade to a zx6r in the spring? Absolutely. But it’s not because the 400 is lacking. I want gobs of unnecessary power, high RPMS and a good sounding exhaust. I’m ready for it. If you just want to go fast though the 400 is enough.

I have a different Bikes for that reason. Most make the mistake of looking for a Unicorn. Smooth and Easy on the streets, light and nimble but want it to also hit 200MPH on a track. I have small city Bikes, from 300-500CC and a Ducati to hit the Track and an other ones for cruising. I choose the bike for each specific ride . Stop looking that 1 Unicorn , I always say.

I ride dual sports. I just want a bike that can go on the high way for long trips and have passing power if an escape from a situation is needed. Seems like it’s checks all those boxes.

I own a 2018 Ninja 400 up here in Canada. I ride it to work sometimes @ 70km round trip, and on the occasional twisties / town trips. My only gripe is the wind buffeting at highway speeds. I am short 5'5 with an aftermarket windscreen and I still get it most times. Oddly enough I cannot remember getting this much on my Ninja 500 from yesteryear. Love my bike, and will not get rid of it. However looking into a slightly bigger bike with a more upright position like a bmw adv bike. A go anywhere bike. All these backcountry roads are tempting but just cannot on a Ninja!

I completely understand what you mean about the buffeting on the highway, I mentioned that in my highway video actually. It's got a lot to do with the overall lightness (169kg wet) of it. Those big ADV's are SUPER popular, and you know what? I get why. They're comfy, tough and can go anywhere, it makes sense!

Nice video. I’m a new rider and own a CBR500R (which is more or less the same as the Ninja 400) and I agree with most of what you’re saying. I will say though, the one thing one gets bored with rather quickly is the exhaust sound, as nothing quite matches the scream of an inline-4. I don’t want my exhaust to be annoyingly loud, but I do wish it had the high pitch sound of a super sport. My bike gets to 95 MPH (153 Km/h) rather quickly, but anything after that is somewhat “slow” (if you could call it that). And that’s just fine for me. The speed limit where I ride is 65MPH (105km/h) anyway 😎.

Ya know as a new rider looking for Amy first bike. I’ve come to the conclusion if you are a safe and reasonable drive that wants a bit more than just the ninja 400 then I’ll look at the Honda CBR650R. Heard it’s super comfortable and it’s upright position makes it easy to drive. Doesn’t have more than 100hp and is a perfect track toy.

I have 2019 R3 and 3 years in I haven't got bored of it. It is plenty fast, it is plenty economical and it is very comfy for longer trips. Recently I changed tires on mine to try something new other than Dunlops GPR-300 like it comes with. Got a really good deal on a set of Battlax S22 and with different tires it feels like a completely new bike once again. Can't wait to see how it will be when I get my new levers in that are on back order. Just as a side note: from time to time I ride on a 50cc scooter and even on that I manage to have some fun.

Grocery carrying capacity seems non-existent. 100% of my trips into town are to fetch groceries on my Honda CM450. I mean, how do you sport guys stay alive? Do you eat a lot of McDonald's, use a second vehicle car (fail) to go get groceries, or your mom just does all your grocery shopping for you?

Hey man i have the 2019 ninja 400 too, i'm from Portugal i really love My bike because i'm a daily rider and i love the way She teaches me things that i wouldn't learn on a bigger bike, i love the throttle who doesn't scare and i can have fun with it, the ONLY thing that i hate its when you shift, that thing is so easy to shift i almost can't feel it and its annoying to adjust the cable every time. i think it has a lot to do with who u ride with, i have cbr 600rr And most of the people I ride with have 600s or bigger we have one guy that has an R3 and when we hit the highway are go on longer trips he struggles to keep up up When we're just chilling around town he likes it just fine and even beats some of the guys on a bigger bikes in the twisties LOL I firmly believe in learn how to ride a small bike properly before you go bigger, great video bud!! cheers from Canada

This is true, I didn’t mention it in the video. Of course something like an R3 will not keep up with a 600cc or higher purring away on the highway, but like you said in the twisties it’s a different story. Cheers the for the support mate!

I’m gonna buy one soon. Around Winter time. Lol. I’m 46 and have driven everything from a 32 foot box truck to an original 250r 3 wheeler. Right now I have a 2005 Ninja 250. Great bike. But with my riding style A 400. I’ll never Need another bike. But I might want another bike. Lol.

That's nutty. I just read that and laughed to myself. I'm also 46 and have a 2005 ninja 250 (currently in the shop) that I'm still learning on (after having it for 8 or 9 years mostly putting only a little mileage on).I didn't think there were many of us left that still own one of these things. I was deciding on the 400 or the ninja 650 or z650, or even the kawasaki vulcan s (all those 3 bikes are from kawasaki AND share the same parallel twin 650 engine with the exception of the 400 of course). Within 6 months I'll probably take the plunge & upgrade. Manny btw ( I think this account is on my wifes name). Im out in California where I have PLENTY of road to choose from! Safe trails.

I learn super fast when it comes to athletics, but figured I wouldn’t push it bc my life depends on it…. So, I bought a 23 ninja 400 bc people said to start on a 400. The first week was tough and scary, but after about a month, (less than 60 miles) I’m already super comfortable on it and can control it way better. I feel like I should have gotten an R6 bc this shits too slow. Gotta switch gears A LOT, which can be fun, but damn… lol however, I think if I would have started on a 600, I wouldn’t have made it to this point. I’d say, borrow a 400, or find some beater 400, then after a couple months buy a bigger bike. IF YOU HAVE RIDDEN BIKES OR MOTORBIKES IN THE PAST.

See and that’s my concern with getting such a low displacement bike. Yeah the 400 or R3 are great and easy beginner bikes but there’s not that big of a learning curve with them… (btw I’m trying to get my first bike but I’m nervous about getting the wrong one and not being happy. For example getting an R3 and it being too slow and I learn too quickly on it.) I’m looking and more than likely buying the R7 yes it might be just outside the category of beginner bikes but it has much more room to grow in it and after hearing this comment I think I know which bike I will go with or maybe a bike similar to it in power/displacement.

If you ride a bike because of the engine power, get a big bore, if you like to ride hard and maximize your potential on the twisties, get a 400cc or 500cc.

Been looking at the 400, or ZX6R. Never ridden either. I'm told the larger one has a more aggressive seating, where the 400 is more comfortable for everyday riding.

I gave up my litre and above bikes because you lack engagement with them (it becomes easy to do most things on them). I now ride smaller engined motorcycles where you use the gears and motor more (more engagement) in general riding. Be happy with what you have because bigger is not always better.

I used to ride a z400 in the early 80's and it kept up with all the large bikes because it handled better in the twisties, had heaps more to go on the highway and was able to hold a pillion with ease.

i currently ride a 800(789cc) Crossrunner and find its plenty of power for what i do :) i've ridden my dads FIrestorm & Africa Twin & had plenty of fun on those, but never ridden a proper 1000c super sport. i'd like to try one some day, just to experience the power.. but for the style of riding i do, commuting to work, long distance stuff & hitting up the mountains, i love my bike.

I miss my 400, got a Zx6r last year and yeah I’d rather the 400. City riding far better, in fact better all round. 2 hours on my Zx6r and my back is broken and don’t start me on fuel 😳 but the sound 😎 Really it’s down to ur needs, my bike is a nice day toy. One month later on my 400 and I do want something a little faster. Not purely for speed per say, but for interstate mpg and so the exhaust is not screaming at me. Then I’ll turn my 400 into a track bike

Ninja 400 was my second bike after I written off my ninja 300 after a year. Took me 1 week and I outgrew it. Felt slow and losing to sports cars and modified jdm at the traffic lights sucked. So I got z900. Wayyyy better and not that much harder to ride and control.

I bought an mt07 as my first bike about 3 month ago. Now I want to trade it for a ninja 400 so bad. I like the looks of a sports bike alot more. I got peer pressured into buying a bigger bike for my first bike but honestly I dont use any of the power it has. I would much rathater have a smaller 400.

I have a friend who got an MT-07 after having an R3 and he loves the MT much more. But it depends on what kind of bike your prefer I suppose
