Érico Schmitt that’s a common sentiment- and yes in some ways safety is increased with altitude... but not as much as we ‘think’ (it’s an emotional feeling of being safer, rather than logical thinking). Higher means more TIME between a catastrophic failure and impacting the ground... but time doesn’t necessarily equate to increased safety. In many hang glider structural failures the pilots have reported a rapid buildup of forces that- had they not deployed their parachute quickly- would have made them unable to do so at all. So if that’s how it goes, all the height in the world won’t help. Then, there’s the fact that after a deployment there is no directional control, so a deployment up high is a greater unknown where you’ll come down, with more distance covered drifting in the wind... compared to lower, over a known clear and safe field. Also, hang glider aerobatics are primarily done by visual reference to the horizon, and the higher I am the less reference I have. So it could be argued that lower maneuvers are less likely to be messed up than when doing them way up high. None of this is to say higher ISN’T safer... or smarter overall... but it’s not as way-safer as it feels like it would be. It’s complicated... risk management is a complicated process!

@@RyanVoight Thanks for your reply! I'm learning HG now :) not sure aerobatics is my thing but I may try one day in the future. Frame failure was a too extreme example I guess, and all you say makes a lot of sense, yet theres the "pilot mistake" factor and reduced reaction time as well... Like badly calculating time needed to pitch up after a dive and hitting the ground, I don't know. Well, you seem to know very well, as well as that crazy guy Wolfgang Siess who does so many amazing super low speedruns (those look fun!). Anyway, remembering to stay safe must not be a too bad thing I guess! Have fun on your flights, and thanks for posting!

Érico Schmitt welcome to hang gliding! The thing with aerobatics, and speed runs like Wolfi does, is practice practice practice. We spent a lot of time working up to what you’re seeing. It’s just like learning to fly, small steps, careful progression. Keep flying! :-)

These were 4-minute smokes used for emergency signals for boating, but most of the time my favorites are from store.enolagaye.com they work great, different colors, and lots of smoke. For most flights the shorter times are actually better… don’t always have 5,000 vertical ft to play with :-)
