Willem Dafoe Discussing David Lynch Wild At Heart Character Bobby Peru

“David Lynch gave me such a good set up and really didn't give me any choices like in terms of costume : he basically brought this thing out on a hanger and said 'Willem, this is your costume !' and I was good with that. [...] And then he said 'We gotta send you to the dentist' [...] It wasn't studied, it was kind of intuitive, but I think Bobby Peru is one of my most complete character sessions.”
Willem Dafoe interviewed by GQ in February 2019 about "his most iconic characters." You can watch the whole interesting interview at • Willem Dafoe Breaks Do...

I love Willem Dafoe. He's just absolutely brilliant. Bobby Peru, will always live on as one of the sleaziest characters I've ever witnessed on film. David Lynch and Dafoe, what a combo. I would go as far as to say he's a genius and undoubtedly a legend.

Seriously. That character lives in everyone's dark imagination forever after they've seen that movie, and haunts our nightmares. It's almost too bad he didn't have a bigger role because compared to him, most of the other characters seemed a little flimsy, including Sailor Ripley. I wasn't terribly impressed with Nick Cage in that movie as much as I wanted to like him.

Lynch has talked about the importance of casting: he’s basically said that the doesn’t have to talk about performances with his actors if casts the right actor-and I don’t have any doubts that Lynch has access to these top talents like Defoe, that bring such highly developed acting skills to the set. The part of this interview I really liked, though, was the description of how Lynch sets up the character for the actor to inhabit-in this case, the costume and the dentures. It’s another reason that Lynch doesn’t need to talk to the actor about choices. He’s creating a specific exterior (what the audience will see) of the character for the actor to inhabit. Lynch is setting out very specific physical guideposts for the actor. The actor has unconstrained freedom within limitations that Lynch has set. It all sounds paradoxical, but it also makes sense if you contrast it with the “normal” way of directing, through words. Maybe someday you will be a director, Juan. There is no time like the present for us to develop our creativity, our vision, and our artistic skills. Perhaps one day our creative paths will cross, who knows? In the mean time, I send you my encouragement to continue walking your path of creativity. Buena honda, mi hermano.

@@MarcosElMalo2That might explain why the acting in Lynch movies is so wildly uneven. He apparently doesn't do hundreds of takes like Kubrick used to do to get the perfect delivery. He just takes the first thing that's on film.

DeFoe is so good at explaining things. He isnt pretentious or arrogant, he is concise and honest; and he is such an obvious professional about his work. Sounds like a great guy to work with, he doesnt interfere with the vision of the director, hes there to bring the directors vision to life, in his own special way.

The irony of Willem Defoe discussing needing prosthetics for stumpy, discolored teeth. I honestly thought, 100%, that he was going to finish his assumption at 1:15 with "I made the assumption that we'd just do it with mine". I had to replay it to make sure I heard it was "makeup" instead.

Then I did it right when I directed Midsummer Night's Dream. The casting was excellent but some people complained I was not getting involved enough, as a psychopomp, in their character. I did when I could I had nobody else managing, producing, but I did create a good atmosphere and most of the actors were fine with my directing. One said she didn't know what to do in a scene...I didn't know what she should do in a scene so I said "fake it"...which is a cop out but a good one. Another time is to say...and its in particular tonality and timing...when its right its good direction (like the just Fake it direction...perferct at the moment) which is "throw the line away". Sometimes an actor, who has to personalize and own the line, has a problem with a line, usually its kind of a fugue they get stuck in, and, in many cases the line is not all that important...you could be brushing your teeth or eating ice...so you give a direction to throw it away, and the actor just delivers the line without nuance and it works.

For an actor who has played some of the scariest, most disturbing characters in cinema, Willem Dafoe always comes across in interviews as a really affable and down to earth guy. The mark of a great actor is his ability to transform. Robert De Niro is good but only plays variations on himself and way less affable in person. Did not believe him as 'The Irishman' because he's an Italian American and has limited range. Someone like Dafoe could have played the Irishman and we'd have believed it.

Yo are you serious with the Deniro comment? I’m with ya on The Irishman thing & honestly as we are on the subject of The Irishman. One of the worst films I have ever seen that was raved about so much.I absolutely hated it. Huge Scorsese fan too & film buff in general my entire life. Anywho Deniro is one the greatest actors to ever do it. Who else could have played Max Cady from Cape Fear? Michael from Deer Hunter? Sam from Ronin? Louis Gara from Jackie Brown? Mudderfooking Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver? James Conway in Goodfellas? LaMotta in Raging Bull? Cmon get out of here writing that rubbish. Imo Dafoe is one of the greatest actors to ever live & so is Deniro. Both aren’t similar & both can act. Just 2 different styles when it comes to selections of the characters they choose to play.
