The Serpent’s Kiss (1969)
This exciting piece is the third movement of a four-movement suite, The Garden of Eden, with each movement having some reference to the famed story in the Old Testament. The mood in “The Serpent’s Kiss” moves from demonic to carefree to frantic, and includes unusual instructions for performance including stomping, slapping, clicking the tongue and whistling. One might conjure the image of a snake doing whatever it can to make Eve take a bite of the apple - and of an angry God’s stomping feet, banishing the sinners out of paradise.
About the Composer:
National Medal of Arts, Pulitzer Prize, and Grammy Award-winner William Bolcom (born May 26, 1938) is an American composer of chamber, operatic, vocal, choral, cabaret, ragtime, and symphonic music. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan's School of Music in 1973, was named the Ross Lee Finney Distinguished University Professor of Composition in 1994, and retired in 2008 after 35 years. Bolcom won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1988 for 12 New Etudes for Piano, and his setting of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience on the Naxos label won four Grammy Awards in 2005.

A student of mine has registered a strong desire to learn Serpent's Kiss. I got out the score and read it, then immediately thought I should see a finished performance with all the "choreography". This girl's performance is the best I have seen (heard). She has the spirit, an overall rhythmic groove, clarity, fingers, and inventiveness to make this a completely scintillating performance. She has unique gifts for music of our time, as you can see from other pieces on this recital. There is much to be said for her partners making all of the aspects of her performance visible to the audience. Hugely enjoyable! I'm sure her husband enjoyed it as well!

Uh, with serpents, that’s not a very good metaphor.

Perfection! Got the stomps and the whistling there as well! This is my go-to video for demonstrating this piece to my students. By far the best performance I've seen of this piece on youtube!

The first time I heard this song, the young man playing it decided to use his foot on the keyboard where the music had written that the notes were to be "palmed."

I especially love the part with the syncopated knocking on the piano! Sadly, I could only find the rendition for two people, the four hands version. Does anyone know where to find the solo sheet music for this song? I would be very grateful! :)

Thank you so much! This piece is part of The Garden of Eden suite, which is included in the complete volume of Bolcom rags. You can find it here: www.amazon.com/William-Bolcom-Complete-Piano-Revised/dp/0634001825 (I haven't seen the Garden of Eden solo version sold separately.)
