Speaking while volunteering in Ukraine**, William McCulla explains his journey to Ambassador Communications Officer Rachael Whittles from his Teach First Training Programme in 2020 in the West Midlands, to now fundraising for a Ukrainian school to have a bomb shelter to enable education to take place in person safely after three years of virtual teaching.
William explains his joy of being a Computer Science teacher at Aldersley High School in Wolverhampton just two weeks after applying for the training programme, and the different projects he’s been volunteering in Ukraine for the past four months - as a driver for an animal welfare organisation, working in a kitchen for a humanitarian charity, supporting a church group, and fundraising for a school.
In his story, William shares:
- How the Teach First mission resonated with him having grown up in Northern Ireland with limited transport opportunities, job prospects, and tougher living conditions at home. And why he feels education can unlock students’ potential, like it did for him.
- His passion for computing science having started programming when he was 13 years old to helping develop programmers and game designers of the future.
- Why he’s so driven to work with school teachers in Kharkiv, the Ukrainian government, and other contractors and volunteers to create a safe space for pupils to revert back to in-person teaching.
