I was 14 when I started watching Star Trek in 1966. I wrote a letter (I still have a copy) to keep the show on the air, I have been attending Trek conventions since the mid 1970's, and I write fanzine poetry (have done so since the late 1970's). Star Trek was positive, hopeful, demonstrated what was best in people, and displayed a future where we were all able to get along regardless of race, religion, nationality, or even what planet you came from. As Kirk has said a place where "Mr. Spock and I are brothers..." Nothing then, or since, has painted so beautiful a future for humankind, as Star Trek.

I'm very proud to say the D.C. Fontana (Dorothy) was an alma mater of my high school. She was graduated from Passaic Valley Regional High School in Little Falls, N.J. sometime in the late fifties, many years before I was. Nobody talked about it when I was in school, probably because Star Trek was not yet in syndication. I think that's something to brag about. She wrote a few of the best episodes in the Original Series like "Charlie X" and "Tomorrow is Yesterday" and a few others. She went on to write in the Next Generation and possibly some of the early movies. Dorothy, I hope you're still with us and if you ever read this stuff, you were wonderful.

I ended up with the flu decided to watch all the Star Trek movies in order. I was always a fan not a mega fan but definitely a fan and more of a fan of Star Trek then I was a Star Wars. Watching the Star Trek Movie series I realize how wonderful and enjoyable intelligent and BEAUTIFUL it truly is. There is something truly to be said about grown-ass adults doing grown-ass adult things having grown-ass adult emotions in the movies we don't make movies like this no more. The true bond between teammates, the true bond between friends intellect as something wonderful to have. The adventures in life is life it's self. 🌟 A team that had one concept in mind to seek knowledge, from the cradle to the grave. 🌟

Star Trek is so engrained into me. I grew up with it as it was in syndication. I was only 2 yrs old when the Cage pilot was created. Spock is my hero and I learned so much. I am along in years now and it still touches me and takes me back to my childhood and probably always will. As you get older and the world changes around you, you will find yourself wishing things were again as you remembered them when you were much younger, it brings a certain comfort inside.

I didn't watch the original run in the 1960's. But in the 1970's I'd arrive home from a hard day at college classes with 3 hours of study facing me in the evening. But my mother heated a TV dinner and gave it to me while I watched Star Trek reruns on WGN-TV Monday through Thursday. It was magical.

Star Trek was the best of us as human beings on this planet and beyond. We wanted a better world, where there was equality, empathy, dare we say love for our fellow beings. No more war, no more aggression, no more territorial possession, a cooperation of knowledge, and peaceful co-existence. Is it too late to make this a reality now, even only with the people on this earth now?

+Nick Clutterbuck See you in 20 years when you catch up! I almost envy you. I watched the first episode with my parents when I was five, and several more, but did not really get hooked until the early 1970s when my local station started re-running episodes at 5 o'clock every day. It was "must see TV" for us. hen we watched the Star Trek Cartoon when it came out, and it was nearly as cerebral as the show - something we never saw on Saturday mornings before. Then of course came Star Wars, and then the Star Trek movies and all the new series, and it was a wonderful ride. I sort of wish I could take that ride again, but I can't. I know every twist and turn and while I enjoy going back, it is like Scotty said in the TNG episode "Relics" - "Ah, it's like the first time you fall in love. You don't ever love a woman quite like that again." You have a great ride ahead of you.

Thank you for the happy tears that stream down my face. I began in the 60's not realising what Vietnam was. Then in college my entire gang dared anyone to use the parlor for anything except Star Trek at 5 pm Monday - Friday. Mr. Roddenberry's ideas were coming through to us in the 70's. We were living what he wrote. Thank God for Star Wars which was conceived BECAUSE of Star Trek. Lucas was inspired by ST and when Star Wars did so well, Paramount brought Star Trek back to the big screen, a family reunion begat....and you all know the rest. This was grand!

Lee, having read your comment about Shatner's Star Trek Memories, well, you won't get teasing from a kid who when the show was live made his own communicator from a fine piece of one by three pine and handwriting the controls on with pencil.... It is unfortunate we must now think of the original as Star Trek TOS, but only because others were denied our coming of age experiences, richer to us for being our own. Personally, I was always an Enterprise fan first, then Shatner, and last the others. Good luck to you, sir.

Just attended the last Star Trek Convention at Cherry Hill NJ. Nichelle Nichols was there and it tore my heart out to see how time has caught up with her. She was talking about her experiences with the series, and was answering questions, however she began to answer questions in a confused way. There was a lot of nervous laughter among the audience as we looked at each other and didn't know how to respond. We still love her, but felt bad that this has finally, happened to her. I still got her autograph, and was in awe of being in her presence!

@davidmustoe4935
@davidmustoe4935 8 лет назад
+pvtawol (Spock) Indeed! (-:Actually I think William Shatner answered his own question. I think Star Trek is an example of modern day mythology. Mythology inspires creative thinking and dreamers,that end up contributing to reality. I think cultures have always been mythology driven. I remember reading about a woman who went into the space program because of Nichelle Nichols. We even make people mythical. If Mount Olympus actually existed, and people were allowed to gaze into it for awhile, bserving the Greek Gods so to speak. What would they do? Paint them? Draw them? Then later make statues of them? When people gaze at the stars on the red carpet, they don't paint or draw, but in this modern era, they do take pictures, and try to get their autographs. Mythology is literally a part of our reality. I think the mythology of Star Trek is what actually created such a 'storm the gates' following.

Perhaps Star Trek is representative of the world in which we all want to live. Onboard the Starship of life with good friends that, even though very different, have each others back and succeed as a team and, in the end, never let each other down. Qualities such as, loyalty, duty, understanding, integrity, vulnerability, deep respect, adventure, risk, excitement and of course surviving successfully for the next episode. I.D.I.C -- Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination - with a constant effort to understand those differences. "These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."

I watched Star Trek from the beginning and still enjoy re-runs of the episodes today. I also watched the spin-offs, but was never really that impressed with them,. Once in awhile they hit it, but they missed the mark too many times. Star Trek came at just the right time. People were becoming more and more aware of the racial situation in the US, and many of us were thrilled with the diversity and daring of Star Trek. I went to many many of the conventions and wrote many letters trying to get the series revived, but they went for the movies instead. I would say it was my favorite tv show of all time.

Don't know if he had already passed, but it was HIS vision of a future where we all got along that was the essential core of this series. I didn't get into Star Trek through the original show but through the movies. On the small screen, TNG and Voyager were my shows. I didn't get to really properly watch the original until a rerun in 1999 when I was 11, where it was paired with new episodes of Voyager (at the time the fifth season in my county). My first episode was "Devil in the Dark" and I was amazed how nuanced and just well written it was (though I wouldn't have put it that way back then as a lad). I was intimately familiar with the big screen adventures, but that was quite an introduction to my heroes' early years. It's the kind of show where you discover new things every time. After film school and my own time spend watching and researching old movies, knowing what films at the time looked like, again gave me a new perspective on the show in the late 2000s. Star Trek is just my favorite for its varied and of ten though provoking stories, great characters and the optimistic future I know we are capable of reaching a semblance of. Even the new shows still carry that in their hearts... more or less.

No coincidence, The Space Shuttle 'Enterprise' was named after, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)
@colquitt74
@colquitt74 5 лет назад
Also not a coincidence that members of the cast were at the inaugural presentation of the Enterprise and the marching band started to play the Star Trek theme as it was unveiled. Ironically enough... There is a tie between Star Trek and 2001 A Space Odyssey. That connection being Richard Nixon. He watched 2001 created a budget for NASA and told them that he wanted a functional shuttle craft like the one in the movie. So when the first one came to be, they named it 'Enterprise' as a direct homage to the series that was an indirect inspiration. Many who worked at NASA were huge fans of the series and saw inspiration within it as to what could be possible. To this day, This show, the original series, has been the inspiring muse that has pushed the evolution of technology. If you don't believe it... Look up various pioneers in the technology fields. Many of them were huge fans... The cell phone... Which everyone seems to be addicted to these days. The most popular models for a number of years was the flip phone... And I must confess, I programed mine to make the communicator sound when it opened up. Lol

Thanks to Star Trek I went into creative writing mode for a while very influenced by the episode A Private Little War. My main character was influenced by Nona from that episode and the Hill people became my make believe tribe of women warriors. Ran out of ideas though in 2013. Still have those stories. Thanks Star Trek for helping me learn to write my short stories thanks to that one episode. Watching Star Trek taught me how to do dialogue and scene changes and character development.

Roddenberry for Star Trek, Bob Holmes for Doctor Who. They were the best in each respective show!

There was a magic to TOS that is hard to explain unless you actually grew up watching it before the movies came out. Before it was popular, in other words. We watched the show in my home, and my parents told me I was fascinated by the show from the beginning, even as a toddler. When it was canceled, it went right into syndication: M-F. Needless to say I've seen every episode more times than I can count. The new movies don't capture that. But then, I think the main vision of ST as a whole has been degenerating since Roddenberry died.

I believe that opening quote was from the Ultimate Computer as M-5 took Kirk’s place for a while and he thought he lost a job. He was having a drink with McCoy. I didn’t see Star Trek to 1972. I changed from a Chekhov fan to a Spock fan. Had a friend who was a big Dr. McCoy fan.

00bikeboy MLK was a very smart man, and would be horrified seeing how jackson and sharpton have bastardized his teachings. Democrats hijacked his legacy. He was after all a Republican as so many of the black community in those days.

Yes, it was very moving and deep. Martin Luther King was only in his 30s at the time but he saw the big picture.

I always loved this show. The movies were great too but all of the other Star Trek that followed the original series and movies 1-6 just wasn't the same and I didn't care much for them. Star Trek just wasn't Star Trek without Kirk, Spock, Chekov, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Dr McCoy and I just couldn't gain interest in any of the others.

don't know when this was made, but it's interesting to hear William Shatner describe George Takei quite positively and in detail, despite his current claims that he doesn't know the guy!

I was only 10 years old when the original Star Trek came on television in 1966. Even at that young age I thought Nichelle Nichols was sexy with her little mini skirt. I was a fan then and still a fan 50 years later. Thanks for sharing this and bringing back great memories.

They persist in this myth that Uhura and Kirk was the first interracial kiss on television (they mean in a television series) . It definitely wasn't. There were at least 7 previous to it.

Yes, Mr. Shatner, "Star Trek" has been amazingly popular and successful...but it wasn't the only one. You ought to try a show called "Doctor Who." It is 3 years older than "Star Trek." It's fandom base is comparable to "Trekkors." It, too, was cancelled for several years only to reemerge again to(what's still continuing) over 10 seasons more popular than ever. So far, no Star Trek show ever made it past 7 seasons, so you might want to show a little bit of respect. Star Trek is amazing and I love it. However, I'm also a Whovian who recognize greatness in both shows.
