Another great documentary, part of the problem with tourism is the area is not promoted enough. Before I visited a couple of years ago I knew very little of the area. What I knew of Scotland was, Lochness Monster, Edinburgh Castle, Highlands, Glasgow. I will be the first to admit I was very ignorant of the land but it is what is promoted by tourism, since my visit I have become obsessed with the Border area. The reason is part family heritage , but mostly the rich and fascinating history. Im from Australia and most of what we learn in history is mostly English. Keep up the great work Mark.

Could not agree more. On my trip to Scotland I skipped the big towns and spent my scant time touring just the Borders and I've not regretted it. Such a wonderful bit of country, people and so much interesting history. Someone just tell the conservancies to stop tearing up Border Reiver archaeology to get to the Roman stuff under it.

Would be something if all the Armstrong's could get together at the fateful site. Such an ancient heritage, indeed. In respect as well to the many more clans, too.

Agree with you Mark, your videos are brilliant and I've learnt a lot from you, and as an Elliott who's family hail from Tynedale I do my bit by telling people around the area where I live area (Somerset) about the border reivers and debatable lands history , a fantastic and fascinating history. Thanks for your efforts

We were in Edinburgh in March and went to the National Museum of Scotland. Very little metion of Border Clan reivers, lots of Highlander history though. While staying in Haltwhistle, the earliest Armstrong grandfather we were able to trace came from Brampton, Cumbria in the early 1700's. Would have loved to have traced the line across the border but alas Time caught up with us.

Great stuff! I hear what you're saying about Edinburgh. Cities seem to monopolize the history tourism, their connection to royalty and the high profile razamataz that conveys. I'd much rather know about the myths and legends of the people, our ancestors and the land they lived and worked on than the dubious tyrants they were ruled by.

Thanks for making and showing your video♡ As my father being Alexander Armstrong born in Glasgow 1919. He told me as a young teen about the treachery the Armstrongs had with the English in history. Being raised to not trust anyone, as he would put me standing on a wall (as a young child) ask me to jump in to his arms and I would jump, he wouldn't catch me. Was never spanked (I was totally intimidated by him) instead he would throw hook boxing punches, that I needed to bobin duckin n weavin as to not get hit. He was a character and a half, being a bearknukle boxer that fought in a traveling circus, that if could last a few minutes fighting with him would win a cash prize; he wasn't big, 5'7" he killed one of the challengers in one of these bouts! He was a cook in the merchant navy and stuck with it in cafeterias and eventually in posh restaurants till his death. He could cheat at playing cards, snooker, darts and would use this talent in local unsuspecting customers in pubs. He had four boys before meeting my mum and as he couldn't marry her he adpopted her to give her the Armstrong name and had three children with her; as have probably many half brothers and sisters also after they split up, as he was a wife beater. His hobbies were, fighting, drinking, gambling and womanising; all conveniently feeding his addictive disposition. He was a bigot and was especially very rude towards nosey people, as when we moved to a new flat and the neighbour introduced herself, he told her to "get lost and called her a nosey cow" His favourite expressions was "Who the hell are you!" He had a terrible temper, when he was in a bad mood, my mum would need to hide the carving knives. If my mum cooked his dinner not up to his standards, he would throw it plate and all at the wall. As a young teen my mum gave me a job, it was to go to the local telephone box to call the police, then when they arrived he would settle down. If he didn't like what was on TV or he watched a horse race that he bet on and it lost; well it would get kicked off its stand. He would come home somtimes when the pub closed and bring homeless smelly alcoholics or haggard prostitutes with him, where we had to give up our beds for them. Othertimes when he was drunk he would cry his eyes out over the treachery of this brothers selling his greyhounds. What more can I say, but it isn't easy being an Armstrong.

JIN TAO AL WING CHUN where were you living when you were young and your father was up to all this?
@starshipdjs7524

This started for me in the Angel, Islington, with the five of us living in a small two room basement, one room for sleeping and the other was the kitchen, no bathroom only a mental bucket under the stairs. We where there up to the age (for me) till the age of around ten, all five sleeping in the same room. The health conditions became so bad due to mold and gas heating fumes, that it wasn't fit to live in any longer. We moved to a council flat in York Way, near Kings Cross station, for about 4 years, that is when my mum moved out, my brother joined the arm, my sister moved out and was staying with a young couple as a live in baby sitter and I was living alone with him; not good! Could be asked, why my mum was with this abusive Scott's man? The reason is she was Maltese and not speaking English at the time they met. She was running away from her sexually abusive step father that was part of orgznised crime. So he, my fatherm not intimidated protected and cared for her in the beginning but eventually he became abusive to her. Her step father, put a hit man out on my father and she reconciled with her mum and stopped it from happening. So yes, this Armstrong story starts to get better and worse but never boring... As my mum seemingly jumped out of the fire and into the frying pan and back in to the fire... As for my father being born at the beginning of WW1 in Glasow, in the Gorbals area and living through WW2. While my mum being born in Malta, growing up during WW2 on an Island, considered to be the most bombed place on Earth, hard times has always been present. Want to know more?

Growing up having a Scotttish father and a Maltese mother had its differences compared to other kids living in the concrete jungle of London. During that four year period (for me) in York Way, from about ten to fourteen having a bathroom with a flushing toilet in it, was a luxury item, that only posh people had. Before that, living at the Angel, Islington, London, considered to be high class for some, as a close neighbour was Roger Moore, lived only a stones throw away. We could see him and his friends having black tie dinner parties on occasions. Meanwhile on the other side of the canal... As before not having a bathroom (at nine years of age) hygiene wasn't much of a concern, as oftern times, there were moments at school before PT, I would quickly have to run to the school toilets to wash my feet, as they (embarrassingly) were filthy dirty. Coupled with the age of nine and before, was wearing the hand me downs of my four years older than me brother; where everything was far too big, as pulling my trousers up all the time was something I was known for at school by everyone. Being a very skinny kid at this time, was a nightmare, as was growing up freezing cold (during the winter months) having to wear shorts in school up to the age of eleven, where standing next to the school radiators was the nearest thing to happiness I could find. My mum (bless her) knitted wool cardigans that would itch so badly that I would look like I had fleas, as was scratching constantly. So there I am (at winter) a smelly, skinny, kid, freezing cold, wearing clothes that are too big and scratching constantly due to wearing woollen cardigans. For sports I was put as a goalie in the soccer team, that a bus would pick us up from school, to take us to the soccer field. Remember just standing there as a goalkeeper, wearing just shorts, T shirt and plimsoles; in the cold mist, freezing to death, crying, while all the action was happening at the other end of the field WTF So it wasn't like primary school was any better than home life. Where living in London as a child, in a basement, with only two small rooms (for five) without a bathroom, below sea level, smelling of mold and it growing on the walls, where my brother and sister occasionally passed out due to the fumes of the gas heater. At night could sometimes hear the scurrying of rats beneath the floor boards, as was living situated very close to the canal. The LCC London county council gave us a three bedroom flat to rent in York Way, as the basment at the Angel Islington was uninhabitable. The primary school where we three kids attended, was pulled down soon after going to secondary school, due to it was insulated with asbestos, as discovered at the time to cause cancer. Now a new school and a new flat to go to, with a new view and way of life for the Armstrongs. As no sooner we arrive there was a gas explosion that blew a great big hole in the next door neigbours flat and a young child living above us, fell out of the top floor window to her death due to the window latches not being child proof... These flats were demolished about six years later, as they were found to be out dated and a danger for everyone to live in. While living there a new chapter for this Armstrong's, as learned how to cheat at playing cards for money, in pubs, a very dangerous game if were ever to be caught doing it... as was sometimes, taking the wages away from adults while myself still a new teenager. Would you like to know the story, of how my father, from the Gorbals of Glasgow, Scotland, taught me the art of cheating at playing cards, for money up to the age of fourteen?

Petrina Joye Fisher Reivers were the Cross Border raiders that lived in this area roughly 1300-1603. They lived a life of cattle raiding, theft and blackmail. There was no other way of life as the region was so torn apart and destroyed by the Scotland / England wars over the centuries.
