Willie continually came to Fort Worth from near Waco in the 50s to sing and play. A man with no legs used to sell paper, ribbons, pencils and so on from a box on the sidewalks of downtown Fort Worth. Willie wrote this song as a tribute to the legless man that was always there. What a tribute!

Willie wrote this song about a man that had no leg's. He would get around on a creeper scoot around town selling ribbons , paper roses at Christmas in down town Fort Worth Tex. But the man was from Mineral Wells Tex I would see this man when I was A kid around town Willie saw this man and wrote this beautiful song with the mans words

Listening in 2023. My Godmother passed suddenly on December 1. Christmas was her most favourite time of year. We would always sing this song, she played piano and sang - it will always remind me of the true spirit of Christmas. ❤

This is my favorite Willie version of the song. My wife grew up in Fort Worth and remembers the man as well as a lady ( wife? ) who was there and sang with a guitar on the downtown streets of Fort Worth.

Love the original. Used to listen to this one with my Papa when I was a kid. He had it on an old cassette mixed tape, I think. It had this, Funny How Time Slips Away; Hello, Walls; Good Times; Phases and Stages; a song with a line like, "footsteps match my heartbeat, funny heartbeats on lenolium"............... I've been looking all over for it, but I'm afraid it was a one if a kind compilation my Papa made from multiple Willie Nelson tapes..... I wish I could remember every song, because now that he's (my papa) has passed away, I'd give anything to hear that tape again...

I believe the song you're looking for is "She's Still Gone". I remember listening to a lot of these with my dad too, especially "Hello, Walls". "Four in the Morning", "Shutters and Boards"... My dad passed a couple of years ago and I wish I had his music collection, too!

Yes. WILLIE Nelson wrote and recorded it in 1963. This is the original version of the song. Roy Orbison recorded it in 1964.

I love love this song. We heard Little Jimmy Dickens sing this on The Opry one Saturday night and Jimmy has the voice for any kind of a ballad. I do like Willie's version here. Thank you for posting Willie's original version, and not his later remake. When he rerecorded it, it lost some of the poignancy in favor of a too slick sound.

This is a different version by Willie than I have heard before and I like it better. Wille did write the song and Roy Orbison took it and made a hit out of it. Willie re wrote the song in 1979 for an album but that was not as good a versiion as this one. or the one's Oribion did. One thing to remember is that when you think Willie Nelson and Roy Orbison you are thinking of two of the very best with a song like this. Personally, I like Roy's better but that is only my personal feelings. .
