As someone who's living with mental illness, I can relate to this song on so many levels. Probably not why this song was written, but I can relate to it nonetheless.
Willie can do no wrong. Hie is Country Music personified. A liviing deity of the arrt. Many artists have recorded this number and for me the Elvis version will always be the touchstone. Willie does it pround, though. Massive respect.

I don't know Mr. Willie Nelson, but my deepest respects for him and his music. I have always admired him as he is truly genuine and down to earth. Keep on moving the spirits.

Oh don't get me wrong. I suppose I was just wandering in my thoughts that night. I love Willie as a songwriter to death. A brilliant talent even as a younger man. People like this somehow lead the way because they have to because they are so gifted it's not funny (if that makes any sense .. I hope so).
@johnrunion 'through tear drops and laughter they walk through this world hand and hand' waylon wrote the rest. he told willie about it over a card game and willie wanted that line added so he would get co-writing credit.
@calco3002 they almost all have that guitar that sounds like a drunk falling down. in '72 o'keefe's original version was a hit so everyone had had access to a radio that could pick up an am pop station heard it. it got lots of airplay. Musically willie is doing no one any favors...except himself.

@calco3002 I have heard all the version's made of this song and the best version is the original by Danny O'Keefe. Bar none. I like Charlie Rich's version a lot too. Leon Russle's version is different it is a lot more polished LA sounding. This is Ok and generic.

@jimincairns willie ain't got nothing on merle haggard and the original hank williams. as a song writer, willie ain't got nothing on merle haggard, hank williams, harlan howard or roger miller. just because someone is/was popular that does not make them the best. if being popular = best, then i guess justin bieber is the best right now...and i know that ain't so. you can not debate logically. you must resort to name calling.
I am just kind of confused as to why the best songwriter of all would sing someone else's song unless it was grand. This song is not grand. It wound be okay if this were a great song or something, which it is not. .. I question why Willie was even interested in this song. Perhaps a bad time he was going through in his life .. drugs or depression ? .. shake it off pal. Let's move on now .. shake shake .. up off our asses . c'mon .. !!
+jdsol1938 Awe thanks .. and did you hear that Guy Clark died this past week ? Great stuff here as well ... awe .... please check out Guy Clark even if you were not previously involved w/ him. He played music his whole life. A great singer/songwriter. He had a definite very interesting singing voice. We all have to go sometime .. :-)
@jimincairns and the vast majority of them are over rated. if not for willie's pro-pot stance + long hair and alleged political beliefs + making sure that the public doesn't forget about him by creating publicity for himself nearly every month he would be forgotten. he's recorded what 2 ant-war songs in what 40 years? and the second one was just a few years ago when it was politically correct to do so. he is just a user.
