Ashley Pointer | May 1, 2024
On a call ahead of her Tiny Desk taping, WILLOW told me that she "just wants to feel it and be in the vibe." Many artists worry about having to tailor their music for the space, but if done right, a beautiful synergy can be achieved. With boundless energy and magnetic stage presence, the artist's exceptional vocal range and musicality left the audience spellbound.
Despite being only 23 years old, the singer-songwriter and musician Willow Smith is a vet when it comes to this music thing. She's been consistently making music and on a journey of sonic exploration since she was just 9 years old and is about to put out her sixth album, empathogen, in just a few days. Zach Tenorio on upright piano kicks off the show, cueing the first few bars of the jazz-infused, odd-meter vibes of "Symptom of Life" from the new album, later complimented by trippy Ebow effects courtesy of Liso Lee on guitar.
Then, a couple throwbacks: a stripped down arrangement of "Split" from the 2022 album and fan-favorite "Wait a Minute!" from her 2015 album ARDIPITHECUS, which undergoes some mind-blowing bass riffing from Mohini Dey. Dey continues with some severe stank-face on a world premiere of the funky, bass-heavy "Run!" from the upcoming album, locking in tastefully with The Pocket Queen on drums. Closing the set with "Big Feelings," the band gets busy while WILLOW's vocals soar, effortlessly teetering between emotive highs and lows, leaving us all wanting more.

Fun fact: The marking on Willow’s forehead is called tilak- it’s made with a clay from a sacred holy river and the paste is called Gopi Chandan. A mantra is chanted when applying it asking God to reside in the mind and open our minds to His presence! (It’s placed on 12 different parts of the body too) It’s a beautiful ancient Vedic practice from a spiritual lineage called Krishna Consciousness. Or God consciousness! Its main teaching is that we are all spirit souls, not the body.

@@niklassilen4313 You’re wrong. There is learned talent and natural talent. As a professional in music and art and casting, there are many differences with learned behaviors and innate behaviors. They exist on quantifiable levels. Like the day my brother had Dylan in his recording studio. Dylan is the grandson of Carole King. He was 12 at the time. He was studying guitar with my brother, but was playing drums in the background while we were on the phone. He played like a seasoned 30 year old drummer. My brother said “he doesn’t even play drums or have a set at home.” That is natural talent. That is also genetics. A person that studies and learns the arts is like Madonna learning to sing the parts for her role in Evita, and Patti Lupone’s version. Anyone with a decent ear can detect the difference.
@niklassilen4313
@niklassilen4313 18 часов назад
@@paulbrighton3303 Okay I see what you mean. I do agree with you, but only when it comes to "extra special individuals". My point was more towards people in general. Take for instance the myth of many people thinking they are tone deaf.. yet when you measure the ability to reproduce and detect pitches in Asian countries that have significant cultural meaning in pitch detection (literally the whole word can change meaning depending on how you vocalize it) you find that the absolute vast majority of the people can detect pitches very accurately. Thus you aren't born to be tone deaf, but you do loose the ability if you don't practice it from a very young age. When it comes to every day "pretty darn good" artists, it almost always comes down to pure determination and the amount of training and effort put into something, not a natural born talent. This is the myth I'm combating as it's such a silly gatekeeping mechanism (and also a good reason for some people to be lazy and blame things on lack of talent). You could however argue that people with very good self-discipline have an edge.. but again I'm pretty sure that's a nurture vs nature thing in itself. Having said that, I see what you mean and I do agree. There are some rare genetic freaks in all walks of life that were indeed born with different genes but these people, are quite rare.. and possibly the vast majority never "graduate" to super stardom because talent alone doesn't take you anywhere unless you practice your talent. This is a known phenomena in sports. Those that find things very easy at a young age sometimes forgo practice and end up being washed up could-have-been's. As for determining who is this kind of talent in a subjective field like art, is a whole other can of worms.

Of course her parents fame and financial status has benefited her immensely. But you can throw all the money in the world at someone and the best you can hope to do is turn them into a one dimensional entertainer if they have no natural substance of their own. True artists are born and Willow has that extra little something in spades. If all she wanted was to be in the spotlight she could’ve easily taken the Kardashian route but she chose to stand for something, apply herself, put in the work and, yes, utilize everything available to her, including the wealth of the family she was born into. Unless you’re stuck on whining about how unfair life is, you should take zero issue with that.

Insanely impressive how she balanced pitch with expression with breath with pronunciation and enunciation of the lyrics because the lyrics are so huge…wow.

I almost jumped out of my chair seeing Mohini Dey and Pocket Queen in the thumbnail. I already love Willow’s voice, so this is quite a treat.

@@cjourneys5785 - Mohini Dey is the bass player, and Pocket Queen is on drums. To get the other band member names, I needed to check the description because I wasn’t familiar with them as I’ve followed Mohini and Queen for years.
