You really need to re-watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it went way more in depth with the character's psychology. He had a bad relationship with his father so he had a low opinion of parents, he also didn't trust people because of all the people stealing his ideas. He spent more than a decade locked in the factory not talking to people, leading to an inability to talk to people very well. He was so cynical when he was looking for a successor he wasn't looking for the most virtuous person, he was looking for the one who was "least rotten". Also I mentioned in another comment that Johnny Depp's acting had a lot of subtlety, Gene Wilder had no subtlety.

Why do people still not get it? This is NOT a remake of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. It is Tim Burton's (love his work) adaptation of the book.

I actually didn't like the original movie. I felt it so slow, the writing was a bit bland, the acting was decent but nothing memorable, the songs I dreaded. I disliked the songs so much. I just really enjoyed the modern one more with Johnny Depp.
