I believe Wonka's horrible treatment of Charlie and his grandfather is part of his test. Even after that Charlie still chooses to do what is right, proving that he is the heir that Wonka has been looking for.

Just reading the title of the song I am getting nostalgic. As a kid that song was always a favorite. I told me that I could do anything I wanted. Make this life my own and live it however I felt was right. I know that if you didn't grow up with it, this movie might not be that special, especially seeing it for the first time as an adult. That said, this isn't just a classic, it helped shape a generation of people like me. I certainly haven't taken the most traditional path through life but I am glad for that and the influence this movie had in giving me the courage to do it.

I have read elsewhere that in that final scene, during the rehearsal Gene Wilder played it as he was just disappointed when he told Charlie he gets nothing. Then when the cameras were rolling he did the scary Wonka and the reaction on Charlie's face was real because it was such a surprise. Wonka is portrayed on the edge of insanity throughout the movie. Is it surprising given all he did to set this up that he might feel rage that not one child followed the rules?

I have a theory about Wonka yelling at the Grandpa and Charlie that it was a final test thing where he comes across as mad and angry to test if that could cause them to double cross him and give away the secret. Notice how he wasn't angry when the other kids messed things up. I mean he kinda was when Augustus fell in the chocolate river but not as much. Like he was saving up his supposed anger for the last remaining child to test them. Another theory of mine is that he really was angry but it was because he saw a lot of potential in Charlie and didn't think he would mess up and felt let down but his spirits were lifted back up when Charlie gave back the gobstopper.

Wonka, being nasty, was crucial to the plot. There must be a believable drive that might tempt Charlie into betraying trust to Slugworth. "I'm sorry dear boy, but you broke the rules" just doesn't cut it, as it allows so much room for fence-sitting in regard to whether one (of as much character as is seen in Charlie) turns on Wonka or just walks away disappointed. THIS is all part of great (not luke-warm) movie making.

11:33 the tunnel shows them their deepest fears. Wonka doesn't seem to have a fear. Or he just distracted himself for the length of the wide by screaming nonsense so he wouldn't see his fear. All the others have normal fears. creepy crawlies, death, gore, etc. But Charlie, his fear is Slugworth. A man that poses a (perceived) threat not to Charlie, in fact, he would help Charlie, but poses a (perceived) threat to Wonka. I thought that was interesting. None of the other kids were scared of Slugworth at all.

Two other films featuring the incomparable Gene Wilder, that haven't been mentioned so far, on this channel, that I'd HIGHLY recommend: - Silver Streak (1976) - The Producers (1967). Both are very solid, entertaining films. If I had to pick one, it'd be 'Silver Streak' - the first of what turned out to be four films that paired him with Richard Pryor. The film is a thriller-action-comedy, and has a number of unforgettable hilarious bits that probably could not be filmed today without being edited out. The film also has two other 'crossover' actors from the James Bond films: Clifton James plays a small-town bumbling Sheriff very similar to the 'J. W. Pepper' character he played in the Bond films, "Live and Let Die' (1973) and 'The Man with the Golden Gun.' (1974). And, Richard Kiel plays an ominous henchman very similar to the 'Jaws" character he would go on to play the following year, in the Bond films "The Spy Who Loved Me," (1977) and then again in "Moonraker" (1979).

:: Points up to the date:: Many reactionaries 'go/say/react' with their own experiences - especially their view on things as 'they are now' and do not account, albeit it is probably hard especially when you didn't grow up within those times... But do not account for 'the times' in which the movie was made. Please note that Black and white TV's where the norm in 1971 and we didn't get our color TV till the next year or so. We did see it at the theaters where you could see it on the "Big Silver Screen" and in color but later it came on TV. Things or for that matter everything was different back then: Smoking was fine but as 'we found out later (1986?)' that smoking was bad due to the collusion of the tobacco companies. People would start up their cars in the morning and leave them running till they had to go to work or bring their kids to work. Kids would go and play outside until it got dark outside. There was no 'real need' to lock any of your doors and most people didn't. But again this is a fantasy movie lol It was one - next to The Wizard of Oz that we looked forward to watching every year! Look at the 'sense of morals and values' within the messages/songs in the movie, that really isn't done now-a-days... Now-a-days its virtually all action with little or no 'morale values' given. OH! So like 'special effects' (not sure if much was done except for the tunnel' but now-a-days you get entire movies with special effects, back then it was limited until Star Wars. And I do mean Star Wars cause that's what was on the billboards when I went to go see it at the theaters 4 times. For my part this - excuse me - but I need to include 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 as part of the Golden Age of Cinema, including the 1980's. Lost my thought, but some special effects stand the test of time, whereas others don't. IE: One movie which is 'good' may have been released in 1989 and its special effects suck, whereas one that was done in 1982 may still look good... Also note that kids in these days - up to the 70's and maybe mid 80's had been taught 'manners,' morle's, etc. and at least showed them while in public. Now-a-days that's virtually gone. Anyway - its something to consider as in some movies you'll see things that you'll be 'appalled at.' I mean look at 'black face' - when I grew up it was 'socially acceptable' (due to those 'in power' at the time) but now is extremely 'be-rated' because of the racism and for soo much more! I mean as for Willy - being mean to Charlie - I'm sure he heard the comments from Charlie, etc. understanding him to be a candidate and probably thee only one it upset him (Willy as a character) and he blew off some steam in getting angry (at least) towards Grandpa/Charlie for breaking the rules. As for 'testing him' that's going to be a 'given' (algebra?) as far as the movie goes. Least we all forget that Willy actually apologized to Charlie. I mean - and again this isn't required as an 'reactionary' that 'you put yourself within the movie - but if you were Willy Wonka I'm sure you would 'test' the candidates too (which is why it is a given). The thing I don't care in this one is calling the test douchey as it has very negative connotations for myself; albeit there are hundreds of different 'kinds' of reactionaries and that maybe the way 'you' call things like that. As someone noted below - it might be a generational thing, or a 'locality' thing (where you 'grew up' etc.) and that is totally fine. Otherwise its at least pretty good. Here I am speaking mostly for myself but I have talked and will continue to talk with about 5 other Paetroners and we're all of the mind that we watch these reactions mostly cause we want to 'relive' and experience the same of what we experienced in any given movie; least I forget that we can and do at times love it when they do and don't; so it pretty much comes down to 'taste' and presentation. But then again that also leads to 'your viewers' and 'consumers' which are two different things. Thank you for sharing!

The actor who played Slugworth isn't the same one in "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?" You're thinking of Christoper Lloyd, the actor who also played Doc in the "Back to the Future" films. And good job predicting that one of the golden tickets was fake and Wonka's anger was a test.

1. I first saw it when I was 10. 2. Ronald Dahl the book author was a well-known LSD user. (you can see why) 3. The Umpa Lumpas told the reverent portion of the story. Anything beyond that would have been unnecessary and overkill 4. I suspect Wonka knew which children would win the tickets (lessons for our behalf) because Slugworth was at the scene almost immediately. 5. Many people (especially women) seem to get a creepy feeling from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. 6. This is the only roll Peter Ostrum/Charlie. He's now a veterinarian. 7. After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp, then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied. that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know what's real and what's not." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth." 8. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎 9. You can get away with anything in a musical.

But I didn’t see that as worse than potentially m*rd*r*ng kids, bratty or not. I was in fact surprised Charlie and his grandfather got off so easily after (stunningly) breaking the rules. As in, they weren’t threatened with some heinous fate like the others. 👀 Though I guess I also feel differently about his relationship with Grandpa Joe as well. I get your point, Charlie's sacrifice of handing back the gobstopper would've been far more meaningful if the Slugworth character was real (truly giving up a potential fortune). The problem is its totally out of character for Willy Wonka (who was always was 5 steps ahead of everyone else) him risking handing off his next biggest money-maker to a bunch of spoiled brats who could sell it to his competition? No. I think its a far better message if the whole thing was a life lesson and a test for these kids with no chance of financial gain for doing the wrong thing.

Yelling doesn't make the decision unfair. Also, The test started in the beginning, Mr. Slugsworth offered all kids a deal. If you look back, you'll see him around for the announcement of golden ticket holders wearing different outfits. I just noticed this myself recently. So the gobstopper was always apart of the test. How pure are your intentions? Are they worthy enough to be my successor?

Oof, it's a shame the misframed HD/Blu-ray version is still so widely available. Paradoxically it shows too much most of the time! I have a demonstration of what's wrong on my own channel. Next time you watch Willy Wonka, or anyone else reading this does, do yourself a favor and find the 4K version or the widescreen DVD. You'll know right away because the title sequence on the bad one has a thick black border. It's subtle but the framing is much better. (I hear most recent editions still have some small audio issues though.) Good luck! (Also, wow, whoever subtitled that copy: "The little GROOVER's getting smaller by the minute"??)

With all due respect to Johnny Depp, whom I love as an actor and human being, Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka to me. Like Johnny, Gene was such an incredibly kind person. There is an interview with him about this movie and he talked about the little boy who played Charlie being such a sweet, soft spoken little boy. He said he was so tempted to sit and talk to the little boy about how he was going to have to yell at him in that last scene but don't worry because he's not really angry with him. Of course he couldn't do that because it would have made acting out the scene more difficult for the child, but he felt so bad for yelling at him even in pretend.

Johnny Depp in the movie is 10 times worse than Gene Wilder. He’s so much more mean to the kids. He enjoys torturing them. Where is Gene Wilder doesn’t but I’m glad you enjoyed it. That was fun. Thank you.

Knife sharpening used to be a business in the old days. You will see it in the 1969 movie, "Oliver", too. No he is not Christopher Lloyd in Roger Rabbit. Violet is put in-between to styrofoam spheres to become a blueberry. She hit her head on the door frame when they rolled her out. Your edited out all but one song. :( Being subjected to 3 minutes of brashness from Wonka after they purposely broke the rules and overcoming that with the return of the everlasting gobstopper is a pretty low bar to receive a billion dollar factory.

I have, and the Witches. Roald Dhal was very dark, but thats because he knew kids loved it and could take it. He never talked down to kids; he knew we werent stupid. The part in the witches where grandma tells the boy about the witch who turned a kid into a porpoise who just swam away, never to be seen again, just chilled to the bone, and i loved it.

@@paulinegallagher7821 According to the book, witches don't seem to be able to alter children's minds or human abilities. The narrator pointed out that he didn't lose any of his cognition as a mouse, despite the Grand High Witch assuming a child turned into a mouse would be tricked as easily as a real mouse. The book mentioned that the reason they knew the porpoise was a child was because he talked and joked with them, so apparently he could still talk. The other children mentioned was the little girl who was just led away, never to be seen again, the little girl who was trapped in a painting and yet still aged over time and appeared in different positions over that time, and the girl who turned into a chicken and her parents kept her in the backyard.

A classic made-for-tv movie from 1971. Gene Wilder absolutely owned this role of the charming, peculiarly eccentric and unpredictable Wonka character. I first read the book "Charlie Bucket & the Chocolate Factory" in 1968, and saw this movie rendition three years later. Memorable. Not as dark and off-putting as the later "Wonka" Depp movie.

This film wasn't a made for TV movie at all. It was only ever intended to go to cinemas and had its theatrical release on June 30th 1971. It was a flop initially though and only gained its current cult classic status through television showings over the years and is now a beloved film for many.

Omg, there should be a law against younger generations watching classic movies. The glaring problem is you have no context. You did not live in age of imagination so you don't possess that hopeful quality of the heart which is endearing. This current age are like robots and with them living in an age of technology, you can understand it. It is very sad. You are not alone. Film critic Leonard Maltin gave the film 2 1/2 out of 4 stars and said that a "cruel edge taints [the] film's enjoyment". I believe he was also referring to that last scene. As a kid it didn't bother me, since the whole movie is satirical and over-the-top, but in our more aware society of today it can seem like a pretty nasty scene.
@strawberrysoulforever8336
@strawberrysoulforever8336 10 месяцев назад
I'm not so sure of that. Roald Dahl was often very cruel to the characters he didn't like. The bratty children are given very cruel fates, and unlike the book, we don't see them leaving the factory with their lifetime supply of chocolate. They were a bit altered, though - Augustus was squeezed thin, Violet's skin was still blueberry-blue, Veruca was scratched and covered in trash and Mike was a bit overstretched.

This film is great not just for the performance of Gene Wilder and the fantastical sets and music, but more importantly the critique it offers of capitalism. Wonka is not a hero. He's not a good guy. He lives in incredible luxury and wealth literally across the street from slums so poor that a loaf of bread seems like winning the lottery. He operates his factory on essentially slave labor (in the original book it was literally an African tribe of pigmys that he enslaves). He invests incredible amounts of time and money and energy into candy: arguably one of the most frivolous luxuries you can buy. He has the power and ability to do incredible, magical things that defy the laws of physics and does he use it to help people? To be kind to others? To make a positive change in the world? No, he uses it to play fantasyland and make cool candy. He's Elon Musk firing a car into space. He's Bezos spending $50 million for a ten minute space flight for himself. The film doesn't hit you over the head with the lesson and the subtext has to be noticed to be followed, but watching the film with that lens in mind changes the perspective quite a bit. And the ending scene with a screaming Wonka doesn't feel nearly as abrupt. That's why I really don't think the new Wonka is going to do very well. The times are different and the concept of Wonka in the modern world is dated and offputting really. Frivolous billionaires frittering away their wealth for their own entertainment while people around them suffer just isn't played off for laughs as much. People don't laugh at, "2? I can't figure out 2 so let's just say 200!" like they used to because laughing at how poor a kid is just isn't taken the same way. A grandpa just choosing to stay in bed for a decade when he could walk and get around all this time doesn't feel quite the same when we see struggling 70 year old greeters at Walmart who have to work to live. I still quite like this film, mostly for Wilder's acting and the musical numbers (Pure Imagination is a banger and always will be), but I also see it in a very different way than I did when I was a kid.
