Wow, Ms. Rudolph ran like a gazelle with those elongated legs. She's from my Mother's hometown, CLARKSVILLE, TN. I used to love listening to the stories my older cousins told of being a classmate of hers. I was fascinated. She's an American hero!

I was 14 at the time but remember watching all of Wilma Rudolph's races on TV. She remains in my mind the most beautiful runner I have ever seen. When the news reported that she had died in 1994, I wept.

Considering how far she came from such an unpromising start in life, Wilma is, for me, the greatest sports personality of all time. Watch her run!

When she found out that the ticker tape parade in her honor was going to be segregated, she refused to attend. Her parade was the first desegregated municipal event in her town's history. She wasn't just an amazing athlete, she also used her fame to change America for the better.

Wilma was one of the greatest female runners of all time. Her career wasn't very long but that was typical of that era in women's sports. She set World or American records in the 60, 70, 75, yard dashes and 100m, 200m, 220 yard dashes, and was part of two 400m relay records. Way to go Wilma.

70 and 75 yards? There was no such race!
@Pooquie1
@Pooquie1 3 года назад
Yes there was. Wilma ran the 75 yard dash in a time of 8.3 seconds in the 75 yard dash in the 1956 Junior AAU Girls Championship prelims. That record was later tied by Wyomia Tyus in 1962. She also ran 7.8 in the 70 yard dash in 1961 (indoor). The 7.8 followed a 7.9 prelim. Both time broke the existing record of 8.2 set years earlier by Stella Walsh.

In school I learned about Wilma Rudolph, and my teacher read us a book about Wilma's life and showed us this video. My classmates and I were amazed on how fast Wilma was. We wanted to watch it over and over again. We were inspired by Wilma's great success. Thank you, Wilma Rudolph!

It's just sad to think that they won all that medal for the country they loved, yet to come back to home to America in the 60's....still being hated, through no fault of your own of merely being born Black.

@@greenhornet8262 ; So, No one in the North gave her returning to New York a ticker tape parade?. Similar to the Astronauts who returned from space in the 60s, who did get a ticker tape parade like “Rudolph”. And standing there among the thousands lining the road, I wasn’t there either, since “Rudolph” wasn’t liked by the North or South. . . . . . . Hmmmm, sorry, don’t believe your assuming the entire US did not like “Rudolph”, having earned three gold medals. And don’t tell me you were jealous, having polio as a kid, learning to walk, learning to run.... my best friend (from the south) commented on her ability to run by saying, “ Wow, look at that her run”. She could run, kept her stats (9.8 seconds) for a long time

I well remember "very tall" Wilma Rudolph at the 1960 Olympics in Rome sprinting as though she was on fire .... so many years ago .... Wilma was a great inspiration for women athletes who - after her - would otherwise not have dared to participate in olympic competitions ... BLESSED BE HER SOUL FOREVER .. THANKS WILMA :)

If the Olympics, and track and field were set up back then the way they are now, she likely could have run in 64, 68, and maybe as late as 72. Today, Olympic athletes compete until they begin to decline, in track, that's usually in their early 30s. Wilma was 20 years old in 1960, but back then, there was little money to be made, and of course if you took any money, you were no longer an amateur, and could no longer compete in the major events. Athletes got on with their lives after their one shot of glory. Very few competed in multiple Olympics like they do today. Imagine the times she might have posted running during her absolute physical prime of around 24-25?

Just to emphasise that. The 1964 Champion would have finished fourth in this race, which is incredible when you think that the time posted by any sprint champ is usually eclipsed over the four years to the renewal. None of the three medallists here ran in '64. Rudolph and Leone {Ita} had retired while Hyman {GBR} was the red hot favourite to emulate Rudolph and win both the 100 and 200 in Tokyo but suffered an injury before the game which ruled her out.
