Bought a pair of Sabrinas X 4 months ago, I bought them based on a SH Forum member who had them in a 12x10 room, like mine, with Linn Selekt Int. Amp which includes a Room Eq software to tame room modes. I live in Chile and choices for brands and demoing gear are very limited. I love my system! You sit down close your eyes and the experience is out of this world. I feel weightless. This is to let you know that your job as a reviewer allow people to make important financial decisions in a better way and in the end get closer to the music at its best. thanks!

Fantastic story about Wilson Audio's history, love it. And there is a best speaker, the best speaker for YOU. It's a pity that no one to my knowledge has ever compared the uber high end speaker manufacturers, Raidho, Yg Acoustics, Magico, Tidal... They all strive for recreating the live event, but obviously their approach is different. And I'd love to know, what taste profile each of these manufacturers serves best...
@SonicFlare

Ha! Thanks for tuning in! There's several challenges generally in the way of doing such reviews... first logistics: Bill Peugh, Wilson Audio's American sales leader came over and spent 2 days setting up XVX, including boxing up Alexx. In general you can count on at least 2 days of setup for such "uber" speakers... sometimes even more. Then you have the challenge of manufacturers actually having review pairs available - most of the manufacturers are small and nimble: they simply don't have the ability to provide a reviewer their top of the line speaker as it would simply eat too much into their financials or take away from customer orders ready to be shipped. Then there are logistics: my XVX showed up in 7 crates, each one big enough to hold a giant refrigerator. Then you have the issue brought about by the very magazines themselves: this is the BEST *mark your component, that's ever been heard! So unless your component also wins "best of" category, who would want to send you their most expensive gadget for review unless they knew with 100% you would crown it "best"... That's why this whole "best" game has shot high-end audio in the foot... with dramatic consequences... hope this helps!

💯 Danny 👌🏼, the first time I heard the Watt/Puppy 7 back then at my dealer …I was infected. Couldn’t get that sound out of my head any more until I had the opportunity to trade in my former B&W N801 for a MAXX model. They require quite a bit of effort and accompanying real quality equipment (just like a race car!)… but then it‘s simply the greatest (at least for me). Thanks for this beautiful story about Wilson Audio.

There’s never been a “best” to me as far as the vast majority of HiFi components go, but rather a “different”, which is pretty much what you were saying. It’s always been about finding the best piece of HiFi gear for me, that I really like, and which has synergy with my system and in my room. Wilson Audio obviously is an absolutely top notch company, and I’d love to eventually experience some of the big boys, but my Tekton Pendragons satisfy my musical needs for now. Thanks for yet another great video, Danny! Now I’m gonna go look at pics and dream about Wilson speakers. lol

Small nit to pick: Wilson's first commercial speaker was the orig Wamm. The Watts came on the market in '86. I had series III Watts from '91, the last iteration before they switched to metal dome tweeters. I agree with everything esp Wilson's latest line. The continuity from smallest model to flagship is unmistakable. It scales up/down without compromising sound quality better IMO than most brands at that level..

Thanks so much for your passion, it’s rare and beautiful. Your channel SonicFlare is brilliant and having you sharing your thoughts the way you do it is inspiring . I really loved ”the motorway is the music and the sports car is the loudspeaker” Will have to try that on friends that think spending money on cars is ok but on hi-fi is crazy. :) Me and my husband got the focal Kanta 3 with Primare electronics and a rega p10 in our house. Of course it’s not in your league but I’m sure you can understand our excitement of having the setup that’s perfect just for us. That is also the reason I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts here in your comments.. Me and my husband both have A lifelong passion for music and we’ve been very lucky that we still think the best evening ever is an evening spent together blasting our music out loud! With that said we always hoped that one day we would be in a place in life where we could fulfill a dream we both shared and that was a great hi-fi setup beyond our wildest dreams. Six years of saving, planning & dreaming is the time it took us! When we started planning we had three main thoughts equally important about our then imaginary setup: 1. It should look good, with a modern look as it’s in our living room. 2. Should sound amazing. 3. and support streaming from your phone or tablet as well as play CDs and vinyl. There you have it a glimpse into a strangers happiness for good sounding music.

First of all great videos, you and the 45 RPM is the reason why I am back to vinyl after 35 years, and I pick up on a lot from your suggestions. And what a feeling just walking out of a record store with LP´s under your arm, that feeling since I was in my teens. I know Wilson speaker are one of the ultimate to go for. I just don't have your space that you have for any thing like you have in your background. Although I live in a house, but my designated room is 15 m2 and do have McIntosh amps (2x450 watts) as you are referring to in you set up but with more power. In your experience would to TuneTot do the job with a sub! I guess though I would have to try it out first....Otherwise, keep up the good work, keep´m coming... Ulf, Drøbak

Ulf, thanks so much for tuning in! Appreciate your comments!!! regarding your room size and such... I would certainly consider Tune Tots, but I would also consider SabrinaX! Very interesting! I've heard the Alexx V speakers (playing Yello among other things) and they are fantastic and did speak to me: timbre was spot on and scale was perfect. Thanks for posting, Danny - interesting stuff. Outta my price range for a brand with a starting price of $10k, but still interesting. Even more interesting: it would be interesting to know what in the world is going on in Utah of all places that allows so many good audio companies to exist there. Off the top of my head, besides Wilson there's PS Audio, Zu, Tekton, Kimber and probably a lot I'm not thinking of. What are the connections? Tax incentives geared toward certain industries, cheap labor force, religious (Mormon) connection/network, etc? For a state generally under Mormon control, so many really good audio manufacturers seems... odd. Cheers! Tom

My 20 cents: “what’s the best [insert component type here]” is a meaningless question. The answer will vary considerably depending on surrounding factors such as ones tastes, other system components, room … I find that no single component can guarantee that musical engagement you (and I) seek. It’s the synergy of the whole signal chain (including the room) that matters most in my book. All the benefits of the “greatest” speaker (or anything) will be negated if used in the wrong context. Hence, my preferred choice is to buy from companies that manufacture everything in the signal chain… that way I can be sure that the overall voicing is complimentary without the trial and error approach that so many audiophiles go though.

Been interested in Wilson speakers for awhile. I have Martin Logan 11a Impression (you just have to try out electrostats at one point, right?). You have any suggestions on any of the mid-range Wilson, Danny? The biggest, except for being incredibly expensive, seems also incredibly massive so not sure how well they would go along with a 21-22 square meter room. Love that you go into the ultra high-end, it is interesting to see what is out there. Great video!

I am not Danny for that matter..but I can tell you that your actual room size would fit for pretty much all Wilson’s (maybe not XVX because of the size of it) but their speakers aren’t that room size critical. The right equipment (including cables and everything) as well as the correct positioning is way more important than a few square meters more or less. Let’s hear what is Danny’s opinion about that …. 🙂

As others have said, I don't think one can ever say one brand or one speaker is inherently "the best." I have heard many speakers and brand over the last 60 years and, for me, it comes down to which ones have the fewest flaws as the individual sees (hears) it, and which one has the most strengths. There is not such thing as a perfect audio component. Every piece has its flaws. But, like with automobiles, which one appeals to you the most and offers you what you seek in the product. Is a Rolls Royce Phantom inherently "better" that a Ferrari SF90? Is a McLaren 570S inherently "better" than a Porsche GT2RS? Wilson speakers have a certain sound and use technology and techniques to create that sound. But is that sound inherently better than, say, the Magnepan 30.7? To me, they each have their advantages, much of which is based on the technology they use. I prefer the 30.7 as I find them to be more three dimensional, create a better soundstage and don't have to worry about cabinet resonances or colorations. The Wilsons, I would argue, are more dynamic and have better bass extension but for long term listening, I prefer the Maggies. But everyone has to choose what is "best" for them.
@SonicFlare
@SonicFlare 2 года назад
That's exactly right... I think high-end audio has painted themselves into a very silly corner with reviewers driving the "best" mantra, which of course in turn drives advertising revenue, etc. all valid points!

Thanks for putting the currently unattainable desire for Wilson Speakers into my subconscious. I have never heard Wilson speakers but now want to be amazed by them. Unless I win a lottery I will never own any Wilson speakers other then a used set of Watt Puppy. Where I live there are very few, if any, (Very High) High-End-Audio stores that carry the extreme high-end equipment. This restricts my ability to hear these speakers. I would have loved to gone to RMAF 2021 to hear Wilson speakers but, Canceled for ever! :( Now I find myself searching the web for a pair I can afford even without hearing them. You can help - my current speakers, Martin Logan Sequel 2s from the 90s are getting long in the tooth and at minimum need re-capping. I know the Wilson’s are the Ferrari, can you point me in the direction of a more modest ride that can still amaze. More like a Camaro or Mustang. I enjoy all of your videos! Thanks

I listen to a variety of music, it will be hard to pinpoint what I listen too. I’ll try to give a quick review of my music listening history (upon review I failed to be quick). I was born in the mid 60s, my parents listened to 50s/60s county such Marty Robins, Patsy Cline, Lynn Anderson, Vikki Carr, and ballad singers like Joni James, Doris Day, older Elvis, and Dean Martin as examples. I have many of my parents record and listen to them. The first music I picked myself was the early Beatles and The Monkeys. I have ~5 Beatles albums and now favor the later Beatles albums. My collection is no where near Mazzy’s. I was also influenced by the music my older brothers and sister listen to: Olivia Newton John, Jim Croce, Pink Floyd, Fleet Wood Mac, and The Bee Gees. The movie Amadeus, put Mozart in my Walkman for 1/2 a summer. I also discovered other Classical music from Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky. In college I started to build my first serious stereo system. I expanded my listening to Phil Collins, U2, Allen Parsons Project, Queen, Yes, ZZ Top again as examples. My wife brought music I knew but didn’t collect like: Aerosmith, Styx’s, GTR, INXS, Adele and Michael Bubl’e. While working in the UK I made it to London theaters to see Les Miserable and the Phantom of the Opera. Les Miserable was so impactful on my listening it was the only tape in my car for a year! I listen to a few of these songs now but they have lost the impact they once had. I also discovered Jeff Wayne's “The War of the Worlds”. My serious listening took a 5 plus year hiatus. After a move in 2018 I staked out a space in our new home for my stereo. This is when I began listening to vinyl. About 2 years ago I began listing to Jazz. I started with recommend albums from the Vinyl Community. Currently my go to Jazz artist are Miles Davis, Bill Evens, Dave Brubeck, Thad Jones, Sonny Clark, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane. I’ve also been using the Vinyl Community to expand my listening such as Yello, Shelby Lynn, Eva Cassidy, Balmorea, and more. I listen to just about anything but Rap and the “new” stuff on the radio. I guess I’m old. My current focus is Jazz, Classical, and “not sure what it’s called but music like Yello. What I like or listen for; sound stage, my goal is to be in the room. I enjoy focusing on one aspect or instrument, and the details of that instrument. Next time I listen to a song I may focus on a different detail. I enjoy hearing a single note hang in the air of the room as it fades away. Not sure how to describe it yet , but I like the action of the Race throughout the sound stage. Does help define what I listen to?

Bull crap. I listened to them for years, using various drivers from scan speak, focal, et al and the crossover is rotten and sound is not even close to good. Nice kickbacks. Soundlab- that is a speaker that is infinitely better at a fraction of the price. Maggies are just as ugly in their internals and the top of the line new Yamaha, Technics, Majico, and the idiotic BS horns of today with very few exceptions are all crap. GR Research took apart some of the 4K - 10K garbage and found 10 to 20 dollars in crossover parts and rotten wiring. Drivers are idiotically over priced when put into these pieces of garbage.

Wilson to me is your typical over priced, overrated speaker company that produces speakers that sound high-fi in a bad way.
@SonicFlare
@SonicFlare 2 года назад
Everyone has their opinions - nothing wrong with yours; that said, I used to somewhat feel that way too, alas, as you get older I guess you learn to appreciate things differently. If you look at what Wilson does (since you used them as an example, though many others qualify too), the effort they invest in manufacturing technologies, tools, development, man power (most importantly), building in the US w/ local suppliers, paying their employees more than a fair wage, etc. etc., you quickly realize that while you can argue about their sound not being to your liking, you most definitely can no argue with their pricing or assert that they are over priced, etc. I think other parts of HiFi qualify for that much more succinctly - cartridges, cables, doodads and nick-nacks - than calling out Wilson or any other made in the US speaker company... just some thoughts for you to consider!
@JohnLee-db9zt
@JohnLee-db9zt 2 года назад
@@SonicFlare Imo, most of high end is overrated and overpriced. I’ve dabbled in manufacturing and know several high end manufacturers personally. I know how much money goes into many of these high end gear. Unfortunately the markup is insane, but many audiophiles will pay it just because it gives them “street cred” to own the latest and “greatest”. What I don’t like about Wilson besides its house sound, especially its $40k+ speakers, is the use of low or average quality crossover components and even off the shelf drivers that do not belong in speakers of this price range. I’ve seen dismantled expensive Wilson speakers. While Wilson has done extensive work with their cabinet materials and time aligning drivers (although you can never get true time alignment), the quality of components that really matters are not impressive at all. Dave Wilson’s son who now designs the speakers have made the new line up less clinical and more warm sounding, which imo is for the better. So I’m in disagreement with you on pricing of Wilson speakers.

Every serious company have to produce funds for: 1. salaries for employees 2. salaries for people who do R&D 3. salaries for people who do marketing 4. funds for materials they use 5. funds for bills for electricity, water, office working space rent 6.,Funds for pay production process for each components and product 7. Taxes for annual capital etc etc From WHERE company with many employees get money???? Ha?? you idiot! From where!?????? Leading company and having employees is not easy task... you are always walking on edge of bankruptcy because you never know how good will one product be accepted and sold trough sales and promotions! Now you understand why EVERY high end company have high prices... You pay for their knowledge!! Hard work!! etc etc its clear now
