Wilton Norman "Wilt" Chamberlain (August 21, 1936 -- October 12, 1999) was an American basketball player. He played for the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA; he played for the University of Kansas and also for the Harlem Globetrotters before playing in the NBA. The 7 foot 1 inch Chamberlain weighed 250 pounds as a rookie before bulking up to 275 and eventually to over 300 pounds with the Lakers. He played the center position and is widely considered one of the greatest and most dominant players in NBA history.

I think it's very appropriate because we remember Stuart Scott for that EXACT style of reporting and in that fashion "Wilt shocked more people by dying today!" because that's how everyone to a person felt upon hearing the news, and the late, great Stuart Scott conveyed that to perfection.

I do not see Shaq dominating Wilt at all. Wilt was three times the athlete of Shaq.
@michaeldemilia5496
@michaeldemilia5496 5 лет назад
wilt would eat shaq alive. He was 10x the athlete shaq was plus much stronger. Wilt was a track and field star along with basketball star. Shaq was just a big motherfucker who played in a time where there was no one near his size. Back in Wilt's day there was actually players who could match his size somewhat. shaq had no one to compete against, which is why he dominated
@tazzi23
@tazzi23 5 лет назад
Michael DeMilia D-Did you just say wilt chamberlain is stronger than Shaq? Are you high?
@michaeldemilia5496
@michaeldemilia5496 5 лет назад
@@tazzi23 clearly you now nothing. Its a fact he's stronger, many players have already come out and said hes the strongest player of all time. Want more proof? Google "who's stronger wilt or shaq". Several links all say Wilt could bench 500 and shaq could barely get 450. Even when Wilt was 59 years old he could still bench 465, which is more than shaq could in his prime. "Wilt used to work out with the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) during the time when Arnold first came to the U.S. as a bodybuilder. Wilt got his bench press up to 500 pounds. Shaq could only bench about 450, probably less now. When Wilt was 59 years old, he was STILL able to bench 465, which is more that Shaq has ever been able to do." And he did this back in the 60s and 70s without all the modern sports science we have now. If wilt was born the same era shaq was he'd be even stronger and faster then he was 40-50 years ago. So it looks like you are the one that's high, bud. Especially with that typed out stutter.
@tazzi23
@tazzi23 5 лет назад
Michael DeMilia just because he can bench more, doesn’t mean he is stronger, and you repeat the facts you already said and had to make a huge deal out of it so go back in a time machine to the 60s wilt fanboy and shut the hell up you degenerate

On October 12, 1999, I was in a hospital where my then seven-month-old daughter almost died from a respiratory virus called RSV. Good thing she was a large and feisty baby (she was 9.5 pounds at birth). When the nurse was taking blood, and she pulled the needle, we knew she was going to be OK. About five minutes later, I look at the TV. Sportscenter was on, but I had to mute it when the medical professionals were in the room. I look at the TV, and see a picture of Wilt Chamberlain with the caption "1936-1999." I rush to turn the volume on. I was stunned! I am an individual who is VERY stoic with serious issues such as death, but his really hit me - its impact only surpassed by Len Bias (I went to Maryland when he was there). A couple of minutes later, a nurse approaches me and notices my emotions. She says "I know you and your wife have been through a lot. Your daughter is doing great. We're just going to keep her another night for observation." I replied "Thank you, but that's not why I am emotional. They just announced Wilt Chamberlain died of a heart attack at the age of 63. Of course, the only things she knew about him was that he played basketball and claimed to sleep with 20K women. She said she was sorry, went to my wife to tell her your husband is emotional. When my wife saw the TV, she said "I don't doubt it. My husband is a sports historian and he met him personally ten years ago." Twenty years later to the day, the announcement of Wilt's death still resonates with me. There are other reasons besides the confluence of that day's events related to sports history. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

It astounds me that anyone other than Wilt would even be considered to be the greatest basketball player of all time. He was not a mere player but an event when he stepped onto the court. Michael Jordan had the fortune of playing in a league that had changed the rules to make it easier for him to score while just the opposite must be said about The Big Dipper. the rulebook had to be rewritten to stop him because no team could.

My name is Marc Andrew Schumann. When Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain was a Fourteen teenager he could run 400 meters in 44 seconds. When he was 52 years old he could run 400 meters in 49 seconds. He holds 200 weight lifting records that still haven't been broken today. He could bench press 500 pounds six hours straight before getting tired. When he played for the University of Kansas he got ejected out of a game. One time in college he jumped so high for a rebound that he got his armpit above the top of the backboard and he got ejected out of the BasketBall game and he got suspended 5 games for it. They made special rules to slow down Wilt Chamberlain so they could make it easier for Bill Russell and LeBron James,Michael Jordan and the Kobe Bryant era. Also how do they call Dennis Rodman the greatest rebounder ever? Dennis Rodman averaged 13 rebounds a game. Wilt Chamberlain grabbed 55 rebounds in a game against an intimidating all time best defender Bill Russell. The season that he scored 100 points in a game he averaged 62 points a game against Bill Russell. For nine seasons Wilt Chamberlain was rebounding champion. Dennis Rodman is not the greatest defender ever. Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell are. Wilt Chamberlain grabbed 41 rebounds on a torn ACL which is a broken calf muscle on Bill Russell.
@patek9789
@patek9789 2 года назад
agree about the rodman part who is literally the most overrated rebounder ever who cherry picked all his career high rebounding games if you look at his points in those games you will see he had zero and didn’t shoot the ball either and still somehow didn’t even get 30 rebounds meanwhile wilt scored 32 points when he got his 55 rebounds on russel in November of 1960

ive said it before watching basketball for over 50 yrs. and have watched some of the greatest and i loved mj , but the greatest basketball player ive ever seen was wilt chamberlain.You take wilt in his prime against any others in there prime..he wins hands down.He could touch the top of the backboard(over 36inch vertical),he made shaq look like a bowl full of jello.He could run the floor, dribble,pass,Rebound,unstoppabe around the basket. Take a look a wilt when he was 50 yrs. old on utube ,take a look at shaq..two different approaches on taking care of there bodies..Wilt could out lift weight lifters ,we was a giant of a man. I never rooted for wilts teams, but i admired and watched wilt play every chance i could and im glad i did. Dont think you will see another man like this come are way again, his records will stand forever and if perchance they are beaten ,it will have to be a man like wilt and if thats happens we will all know about it.

Wilt was one of the most misunderstood persons in history. A nice fellow who respected every opponent (the night he scored the 100 points, he invited Knicks opponents to his NYC apartment for a post-game get together.) His sexual habits were a search for intimacy, not lust. He was a college track and field star, and a pro volleyball player, as well the greatest in basketball.

When asked about any basketball player's performace, the first 2 things anyone looks up are: a) how many points did player "X" scored in this game? b) how many rebounds did he grab? Then, AFTER checking these 2 stats, he might go look into other stats to have a better all around grasp of the player's impact/performance. And here is Wilt, UNDOUBTEDLY the best scorer AND the best rebounder the game has ever witnessed, UNDOUBTEDLY the best athlete in basketball (at least) history, yet somehow he is never in any (media) debate about the GOAT. I need someone to explain it to me cause i just don't get it.

Cops were still driving the Caprices back in 1999 even though they had ceased production in 96. Those were solid cars. Perfect for police work.

Bill Russell had a much better team this is a team sport after all if they played 1 on 1 Wilt would absolutely crush Anyone because you couldn't make a basket He would just jump up and grab it further more if they wereTo switch places the Boston Celtics of would never ever lose. I'm lucky enough to have seen him in a night club VIP area one time and sure as ever he was sitting down with 3 beautiful women I pointed at him and raised my finger number 1, he smiled at me

Jerry West throughout his career in coaching and everything he was the Class Act what he said but will was so true that he's a big softie will could kill people easily if you lost his temper lucky he didn't though that's awesome to be able to control all the strength and power in skill and he could beat Muhammad Ali

Many of us felt that he would die, as HBO was counting down the NBA's Top 50 players. Chamberlain had been touting that HE was the BEST NBA PLAYER OF ALL TIME...but he knew that HBO would crown Jordan as the Best. Chamberlain had been talking for weeks about his stats vs Jordan, etc...Maybe he had medical problems....and maybe they were exacerbated by the treatment he received.

Kareem wasn't very fond of Wilt. He recalled one time they got into an elevator together with another gentleman. The other gentleman asked Wilt, "how's the weather up there?" Wilt spit on the man's head and said, "it's raining."

"He never got flustered, he never got mad" LOL, that's not true. He did get mad sometimes, both on and off the court. Have you ever heard the story about when he was in an elevator with another famous NBA player, and a guy came into the elevator and asked "how's the weather up there", and Wilt SPAT on him and told him "it's raining". I forget who the other guy was, but he's the one who tells that story (It was some famous NBA player from around the same time period). I guess it does show you that Wilt was very sensitive about jokes about his height. I am a very tall man (about average height for the NBA, 6'4 1/2" barefoot), and I've never found jokes like that directed toward me to be offensive. People generally respect you more when you're very tall, and those jokes never seem to be meant in an offensive way. I think most people would want to be taller than they are. But, I know some of my tall family members are also very sensitive about their height. Tall women usually get a harder time I think, and are often a lot more sensitive about their height.
