As an 18 year old American, I traveled to England to see this tournament. I waited nearly 3 hours to get tickets (for $4 at the time). I heard about this Becker kid. I strolled next to Vitas Gerulaitis. I saw McEnroe play doubles. I saw my favorite Carling Basset play at a small court. Then remember watching this at my uncle's flat in Wimbledon. What great memories that was that year.
Boris Becker: Mit 18 Jahren hiermit jüngster Spieler der "Open Era", der in diesem Alter bereits 2 Grand-Slam-Titel gewonnen hatte. Als Sieger der 100. Auflage durfte er den Pokal im Original behalten und er gewann im Jahr zuvor als letzter Akteur mit weißen Bällen und 1986 das erste Mal mit gelben Filzkugeln.
Der Pokal verschwand wohl leider irgendwo in der Konkursmasse. Schade, Bum Bum Boris war echt ein super Tennisspieler. Phantastische Matches, Davis Cup gg McEnroe bleibt unvergessen.
@@ProBloggerWorld Dazu gibt es viele Anekdoten und Geschichten zu erzählen und: Ja, 1987 hatte der Amerikaner im Abstiegsduell das einheimische Publikum mächtig eingeheizt sowie aufgeputscht und war dabei nicht immer fair. Als Becker gewann, lief er in seiner Reaktion triumphierend mit der deutschen Fahne im fremden Stadion durch die Halle. Das war noch Identifikation.
@@M.EngelhART Ja, das stimmt. Für mich war eher die epische Länge des Matches, die körperlich und mental beiden alles abforderte, verblüffend. Geschenkt wurde sich nichts und das Spiel war mit ein Grund, dass im DC sodann der Tie-Break eingeführt wurde. Rechnet man die gewonnen Spiele grob um, war das Match ein 6-Sätze Match gemessen an der Tie-Break-Grenze. Sehr starke Leistung von beiden und vor allem auch klasse Tennis. Ich weiß, wo ich mitten in der Nacht das Spiel am TV verfolgt hatte. 😄
@@ProBloggerWorld Manche sind ins Bett gegangen und als sie aufwachten, lief das Spiel immer noch, wurde berichtet. Ich kann mich zudem noch an einzelne Szenen erinnern.
I think in some ways, Boris's win in 86 was even more amazing than 85. Because he retained it and only dropped 2 sets all tournament, whereas he dropped 8 in 85, and comfortably beat the then world no 1 in the final in straight sets. Forget 85, Boris is still the youngest ever Wimbledon champion from his win in 86!

Früher war nicht alles besser. Aber eins ist sicher: das Tennis 'war' besser. Ich habe damals Stunden vor dem Fernseher verbracht und Boris zugeschaut, auch bei diesem Finale. Das Serve&Volley Spiel ist heute praktisch ausgestorben, zumindest im Spitzentennis. Darum bin ich sehr dankbar für solche Beiträge auf RU-vid. Es macht einfach Spaß noch einmal zu sehen, wie man auf Rasen 'richtig' Tennis spielt.
@@dannyboywhaa3146 True. I would even dare to make the hypothesis that today's players would not be able to play tennis at all if they had to use the rackets of Boris Becker or John McEnroe. They both used a very small racket that allowed for a very precise control of the ball. This on account, however, of having to hit the ball always with the centre of the area of the racket which did not allow for making any mistakes like the huge rackets in today's tennis.
The courts became too fast?? You have no idea what you are talking about. The grass courts in Wimbledon were massively slowed down since this era. They are much slower now, which is why baseliners do better now in Wimbledon.
@@gentlemanjim480 yes Jim, the courts were too fast and the serve volley game died and just became a serve game - so they slowed it all down - too much, now the serve volley game doesn’t exist and it’s boring just like clay or hard courts... ‘you don’t know what you’re talking about’, we know what we’re talking about so buzz off somewhere else? Beckers best Wimbledon, losing only two sets the entire tournament. If he had had Lendls commitment to the sport he would have won a lot more, he became a bit "feral" after proving to the world the first wimbledon wasnt a fluke. #Boom-boom Boris
Respekt an Boris, da war er gerade mal 18. Der Lendl hat da seine Aufschlagspiele sehr oft souverän zu 0 gewonnen und dann hat Boris 3 Satzbälle gegen sich und dreht das Spiel und plötzlich hat er das Match gewonnen. Der hat gegen die Nr.1 der Welt gespielt und hat da Nerven wie Drahtseile.
Boris Becker: Das waren noch Zeiten. Ich hab damals vorm Fernseher (fast) jedes Spiel von Boris verfolgt... 🎾und diese berühmte "Beckerfaust"'💪. Krass.
Das war noch Tennis, das was heute an Tennis gespielt wird, kann man mit früher gar nicht mehr vergleichen, ich finde, dass das heutige Tennis an Glanz verloren hat, ich finde das Tennis zu Boris Beckers und Steffi Grafs Zeiten am besten, das war noch Tennis vom feinsten.
Sampras war technisch der beste was der für belle unter den Beinen zurückschlagen und dann auch noch so platziert das der Gegner nur sprachlos guckte..
When I bought that Puma racket in the 80s (before Becker's Wimbledon win), the guy in the store assured me Becker was using that exact retail version - with top-quality gut strings, of course. I've never heard anything to the contrary. And there wasn't all that much you could do to fancy it up. The frame was mostly fiberglass. Also, when Becker first adopted that racket, he wasn't famous yet. Just a tall, talented 16-year-old tennis boy. No one foresaw he would win Wimbledon a couple months down the road.
I actually owned both the Puma Winner (Silver) and the Puma Super (Blue) Becker did use the Super which had the screw that allowed you to adjust the length of the racket. The lengthening of the racket was supposed to allow for more powerful shots. I don’t recall Becker ever adjusting the racket during a match. It was gimmicky if you ask me and really didn’t do much.
On the court, yes. But off the court, he is extremely funny and engaging. Look up an interview he did with McEnroe, Becker, and Wilander. You'll see a whole new side of him.

Er kam Mitte der 90er noch sensationell zurück. Hat die Tenniswelt um viele sensationelle Spiele bereichert. Und wenn Novak einen als coach holt und sagt dass es dessen Spiel verbessert hat ist das auch was. 1995 Wimbledon Halbfinale gegen einen wie entfesselt spielenden Agassi war ganz großes Kino.
Eine seine stärksten Auftritte. Lendl hat keineswegs schlecht gespielt. Aber ein konzentrierter Becker in Wimbledon war eine Bank. Und aus 0-40 heraus gegen Lendl den Aufschlag durch zu bringen beweist Nerven wei Drahtseile.
Becker should be an example for most athletes to keep note at he works so hard and made millions but was not please so he took everything and invest now he has nothing. Yes investments is necessary but they must always put away some aside so they won't reach in that position he is not the only one that happens to there are plenty
Give Novax those rackets, he would not get a game from Becker. This is so much better than the brainless ball bashing nowadays. Flair, speed, great volleys. Only speed is left....
@@peterhammer4644 I would say that Novak with today's racket against Lendl on hard surfaces, giving Ivan just what he used during his reign, but with the tennis balls used back then, would be very interesting to see
The game in this video includes technical excellence , physical conditioning , variety of strokes , feel for the game ...etc. It's a very rich game, you had to he very very good back then . people who just comment on how today they would not win a round are clear "tennis illiterates" who obviously have not played tennis in their life.
Ich glaube es nicht.. die spielen ja nur maximal zweimal hin und her... langweiligst für das Publikum. Ich erinnere mich, dass mir die Spiele deswegen damals schon nicht spektakulär oder anschauenswert vorgekommen sind. Beim jetzigen Sehen hat sich das bestätigt.
They were using smaller racket heads back then which had a smaller sweet spot. You had to be a good ball striker in those days. Additionally, racquet string technology wasn't as advanced as today. (furthermore, I think they edited out all faults in the video so we can't tell whether they are hitting first or second serves. I don't find their serves slow to be honest)
Boris hat gezeigt, dass Tennisspieler nicht über viel Gehirn verfügen müssen. Sowohl finanziell, wie auch intellektuell hat er bewiesen, wie es schlechter wohl kaum geht. Als Tennisspieler habe ich ihn verehrt, über den Rest möchte ich mich hier nicht äußern.
