Arcade Fire made their first appearance on Saturday Night Live on February 24, 2007, performing "Intervention". During the performance, one of Win Butler's guitar strings broke, prompting him to rip the strings from his acoustic guitar and smash it on the floor until it shattered. On this guitar, "sak vide pa kanpe" was written in duct tape across the front. A Haitian proverb meaning "An empty sack cannot stand up" in Creole, this may have been a reference to the extreme poverty of Haiti, the country of origin of Régine Chassagne

He did it out of passion for the song. Emotions so strong he knew he couldn’t play that particular guitar ever again. Rare artistry.

The smashing of the cheap low quality guitar represents the desire to stop accepting and settling for the extreme poverty in Haiti. When I saw this as a teen it gave me chills, lol. It seemed so sincere. I didn't have any idea what it was about, but I just thought it was so cool that he played the guitar so hard all the strings broke off and then smashed it at the end, XD.

Smashing a guitar is an abuse of privilege. Some of my favorite performers have done it and I don't like their music less because of it, but it still remains an abuse of privilege.

A string broke on its own just seconds before the beginning of this video, and he took the chance and broke all the other ones. I think this could be seen as a strong sign of protest, as they have always focused on the poverty of Haiti, and trying to get the public to care and help. The sentence taped on the guitar is an Haitian proverb: "An empty sack can't stand up.", referring to the poverty of the island (which would be later increased by the natural disaster).
