Learning to watch tennis from an educational standpoint really helps you win more of your own matches.

Here are simple strategies you can copy from high level college doubles:
1. Play “both back” when dealing with a strong server

2. Fake a poach to distract the returner and/or get them to hit right to you

3. When at the net and the ball is behind you, look at the other net player

4. When your partner is pulled off the court move with them...and if they’re In trouble move back, too

Great stuff, Ryan. I've been playing tennis all my long life and watching top-notch tennis (unfortunately not playing it) for the same time. I learn something(s) from every one of your videos and this one was no different. These videos plus subscription to your courses have really helped me with the weaknesses in my game.

Great videos! I’ve started to play doubles in leagues and tournaments outside my club and your tips are simple, straightforward, and invaluable! A lot of times with the group one normally plays with, we just take for granted certain playing styles of both our partners and opponents and “make do” with what we can do. But these videos will really help me play each point - each ball, even, whether I am hitting it our not - with purpose and intelligent court movement.

Very interesting, I'm always watching where the return might go, instead of the guy at the net. I Really appreciate the summation that cements the lesson. Excellent video 👍👌

Thank you, Ryan ... will start using these strategies as soon as we can play TENNIS again (April, maybe ?!) : the "look to the other net player" (once the ball is BEHIND you) is very good - I always take a quick peek at HOW and WHERE my partner hits the ball and then turn back (but sometimes - when my partner is being poached - this might be too late !) - and I NEVER play "two back" (because I thought this would be "for women's only" !) - I will try this out when the other guy serves strong (or my partner's return might be weak) - and I never "pretended to poach" (because I think of this as "gamesmanship" and I don't like it in others - but maybe I don't like it because I'm distracted - and losing points - when others are doing it ... I will rethink this, too) ... the rest I am pretty sure I'm doing already - THANK YOU AGAIN - you're a great coach !

Ok we lost, but I really think your positioning strategy helped me a lot. Particularly when facing the second highest rated player in the league at the net. Watching him when the ball was behind me and being back enough prepared me when he tried to blast it by me. I also stood further back as the return partner just in case my partner hit it to the serving partner at the net. I messed the proper positions a couple of times and instantly realized the error. All in all, I'd say my doubles game improved dramatically.

Ryan, Good stuff! You are tempting me to subscribing you for sure. Quick question. If I’m returner’s partner and staying back at baseline because my parter facing strong server.. when I can move to offensive position? Because once my partner returned cross court, it’s really hard for me to run from baseline to my offensive net position. Any suggestion/inputs will be helpful. Thanks again for excellent video.

Great stuff. I am playing a lot of doubles and thinking about these things. One thing that you skipped: after a great fake poach, the server's partner stays glued to his position (9:00 mark). He stays at the net even though the ball has gone behind him to the baseliner. I noticed because this is one of the flaws in my own doubles movement. I often forget to drop back on a standard crosscourt.

Hey thanks so much. I def didn’t miss that. Saw it too. I don’t include every idea in each video. I pick and choose. Good eye. Hey shouldn’t have stayed up...moved back (magnet idea). There were 3 other mistakes I saw but, again, I don’t include every idea in each video. Videos would become way too long. Thanks!!

Another great video! Thx! I was watching doubles matches at the AU open and noticed that many servers partners were in a ducking position - do they do that to avoid being hit by the server’s ball?
