Check out my Free Illustration Mini Workshop where I share my journey from Amateur to Pro: www.thedrawingcodex.com/illus...
You will get some simple advice on how to get more detail and polish in your work. How to think about composition. And my thoughts on how to prepare for professional work.
The principals of composition and picture making are time honoured and well understood. But figuring out how to apply them to your work right now is a challenge! Often we need to focus on the types of images we want to create and understand how things like compositional principals will help us specifically!
Happy Drawing!

I really appreciate the real time, traditional, pencil in hand instruction. This is excellent stuff.

Like sitting down at a café, talking about everything or nothing, and just enjoying a good time with composition and story in illustration from imagination. Always wonderful creations and inspiring insights, Tim. I love the format of a podcast or tea time relaxed session with drawing. I look forward to more epic adventures and creations.

It's 4 o clock in the Morning and I decided to look this video while I was in work on an image. The drawing was boring, although the sketch was dynamic. The composition was not clear etc. But you motivated and told me how to keep on working till it's (for my level) quite nice, nothing professional, but It's my first drawing again in a hard time. Thank you, you're a good teacher!

This is very valuable. Especially for illustrative works for card games where characters need to show personality and look distinct inside a limited frame.

Thanks! Yeah card illustration is like it's own little world of trying to make things interesting in such a limited format.

These videos have something special Tim. I haven't found instruction like this elsewhere. Showing the PROCESS in a conversational, relaxing, fun way. Stunning. You create a feeling that anything is possible, just draw some elements in "bum, bum" and try things out. Experimentation, openness, curiosity, trusting yourself. How would crafting a more complex illustration be different? For example, a scene with 10 figures, many trees, large landscape?

This is really interesting, at a certain point in the video I realized that I could learn so much, I grabbed my idea book and started making notes, I love the way you explain composition, and your demonstration makes it even clearer, I will have to watch it again to make sure I’ll remember it all, thank you so much! ❤️

With every video I watch of you I learn more and more about why my drawings just never work out. 😅 Thank you, this gives me so much insight! Do you ever line and colour on paper? I'd love to see these finished, these sketches are very similar to my style and I wonder how a professional makes them come to life.
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex 6 месяцев назад
Awesome! I'm glad these are helping with the thought process! Regarding lining and colour on paper do you mean colouring with markers or paint traditionally?
@EmeraldVideosNL
@EmeraldVideosNL 6 месяцев назад
@@TheDrawingCodex yes, I meant finishing these sketches with traditional materials instead of scanning and finishing them digitally. It would be very insightful. Have you ever done that or would you consider doing that, even just once for video?
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex 6 месяцев назад
Yeah I don't use traditional media much at all for finishing. Mostly because digital is quicker and I'm primarily a commercial artist up to this point. I actually have some plans around this though. It would be cool to go through the process of learning either marker or watercolour to colour traditionally and document the progress. I have used most mediums at some point in the past... But digital is a lot better for getting more done faster.
@EmeraldVideosNL
@EmeraldVideosNL 6 месяцев назад
@@TheDrawingCodex I completely understand that the traditional process is not commercially viable, and investing work time in personal projects isn't an option. I am glad to hear you're planning something though! 1 or 2 Art Ritual episodes I humbly hope.😁 From my perspective as a hobbyist it would be very educational to see someone with so much art experience go through the process of creating something from start to finish with traditional media. Especially considering there are not many artists around (especially with educational RU-vid channels) with similar style and interest in the fantasy genre.

I won this battle, but another one that is harder for me is to clean up and re-draw an idea on paper, to the final paper step

I am writing a novel and the Time era I'm in is done with sketches, later which could be painted, but there are small advances as new colors are introduced and you get colored sketches, this takes place on another planet that is just recovering from an Apocalypse era so say 2500 years later after recovering from scratch, right now there are 5500 years of occupation, and they are nearly right back where they were once at when the Apocalypse happened. I was just wondering what mediums of art would be used, as they are covering things as they unfold, many golden light captures battles, etc. Sample scenes of flowers etc. How many artists would one take with them? on an adventure-type setting. They are still using horses and carts etc, for traveling.

I think "relaxed" would have come across more if elf spear girl was resting/leaning a bit on the spear itself...and have it go more vertical to emphasis that "L" verticaliity.

Do you guys recommend that I learn how to shade with a pencil before learning how to crosshatch? I dont really like shading and I prefer the aesthetics of cross hatching much better. If shading helps improve my crosshatching, I'll consider doing some exercises with my crosshatching.
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex 7 месяцев назад
They are both ways of representing the form. The key is to learn to show the form. You can use whatever technique feels best IMHO.

Edgar Payne's Outdoor Composition book seems to be out of print and used copies are outrageously expensive. Do you have a recommendation for a similar book on composition?
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex 2 месяца назад
That's strange I remember buying that copy new not that long ago... but it was expensive. Do you have Creative Illustration by Loomis? I can recommend that for similar info. It's not as dedicated to landscape composition though.

@@TheDrawingCodex Hey! Thanks for the reply. I don't have that Loomis book. I do have "Head and Hands," however.) I'll keep looking for the Payne. (Ha-ha! Brang the Payne! Arg!) In the meantime, pop the other book in my cart and get my Loomis on! Thanks, Dude!
