Winch Control Box Relocation (Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel)

On this quick episode, i show you the newest change ive made to the Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel! The Harbor Freight Apex 12,000lb winch has a pretty massive control box and when mounted to the winch on the bumper causes some bad pinches and other difficulties for the grill of the Jeep. I took the control box and did a Winch Control Box Relocation to take the wiring under the hood. While doing so I actually found a perfect location for the control box to sit! Feel free to ask any questions pertaining to the video, the winch, or the Jeep im always happy to help.

I have the same bumper on a 2021. I tried the same 12000 pound winch. The rear hot wire would not fit at all and was crunched in my grill. The winch is big and a very tight fit in general. The mounting bolts then became a problem installing due to no room to wiggle the winch around. I considered moving the housing but just went with a 9500 pound winch and it fit very easily. I have a two door Jeep so it’s less weight. The 9500 should be fine. This is a great video showing the box relocated. Thanks for making it!

Yeah with the 2 door I wouldnt sweat the 9500lb winch at all! 12k is probably overkill even for my rig but i was able to make it fit so thats what i went with. Appreciate you watching and glad you think its helpful! It wasnt simple but it was a great little side project for utilizing space on the Jeep.

I was under the impression (it states this in the installation guide) this Badland Apex 12000 comes with the solenoid relocation kit. Maybe I misunderstood or they forgot to add that to yours? 🤷‍♂️🤔 regardless, thanks for sharing and the front of your Jeep looks much cleaner. 👌🏻

So it does come with a relocation kit but the kit is only made to put it to the side of the bumper not any further hence why I had to get the long extension wires and do some mix and matching of parts 👍🏼 thanks for the compliment and appreciate ya watching!

Glad I'm not the only ecodiesel with a RR bumper with this problem.. I'm hoping that this is adequate for my issue as well.. I guess time will tell... once amazon brings my wires.

Only thing I gotta figure out...does the black wire from the control box NEED to go all the way to the barrel? Or could the barrel just be grounded on the negative and the controller small black wire be on the negative terminal too.

So far its working perfectly for me. Room has opened up and the spot where the control box is sitting has been a great holder without issue. As for the black wire I am not sure if you could shortcut that one but I just went with the safe route and kept it as a long ground to keep things consistent. So I didn't like the slight bit of raised hood.. So I'm getting a 3d printed box designed for the head components. Will be extending the switch and wired cables to the cab. I'll make a video of it, and link the file to print it. (I think it'll be a small fee for it. But idk yet. )

I just drilled a hole and in my grill and ran it through on my jk cant even see it. Running the metalcloak bumper too.

The little cover you have over the 3 wires on top of winch did you buy it separately or did it come with the winch?

Do you feel like the winch needs a cover plate where this box was removed? watching videos on this winch the only ones I've seen break both times the bottom plate bent, if you have a top plate that would help reinforce the winch.

Umm I dont know if that would really add that much structural support to the areas that really need it. Do you have the name of the video where you saw it fail there? I might look into it and check it out just to make sure! Its a 12,000lb winch so I would think if anything fails its gonna be the cheaper gearing but im not a mechanic haha

@@LifeOutdoors wranglerstar bend it when trying to pull a stump, literally spiked his truck to the ground because the wench kept moving his truck and tractor. @@LifeOutdoors Holy crap, $120? I'll just go find that gauge of wire and see where that sets me in price. You only used the 3 wires and the little plastic housing piece with the few bolts, right?

@@Objectional_Opinion haha let my loss be your win. Definitely didnt need to do that amazon route but for the ease of everything it worked out. I also wasnt sure what all I was going to need from the kit so I was happy to pay a little extra to make sure I had whatever pieces were needed. Thats correct though, could probably do it for under 50 bucks if you're looking to save. I was more interested in ready to go and quick install parts.

@@LifeOutdoorsmy harness came in today I finished it smh. So I have a question, was there a ground wire that went directly to the battery? Or does everything go from warn harness off winch directly to the apex controller box? The only wire I have going to the battery is a power wire to a breaker switch on the load auxiliary side then from the power side of breaker switch to the power on battery

Did you have to pull apart the actual control box stuff or just take off the whole top and move under hood and just get longer power and ground cables ? I saw another video an this guy ripped the whole control box apart and re wired everything? Your way is faster and easier if you didn’t do what he did

No, the control box stayed sealed i just had to change which wires went to the control box and extended the ground that comes out of the control box. The video has everything in it i didnt do any work off camera i believe!

@@LifeOutdoors ok sweet! I bought my winch brand new in box from store so I’m gonna assume I’ll have everything to relocate it other then maybe a longer ground an power wire

You will need a longer set of wires ordered separately as the ones they provide aren't long enough to relocate the box as far away as i did but i talk about that in the video and link to amazon where i got the set of 3 longer wires! All in all its pretty straight forward and i think it makes a big difference.

@@LifeOutdoors I need to lower my winch as much as possible cuz it blocks my radiator and my Jeep get a little warmer then I like so I got a new bumper so the winch will set a lot lower and relocating the control box will basically get my top of the winch level or under my Jeep grille so it will be completely open as it was before winch

@@Rubicon14 Thats exactly why i relocated mine as well. The diesels already dont get enough air so i wanted to maximize the grill face.

Haha that fair 😂 the diesels already have an air flow problem so I just wanted to maximize the amount of air that hits the grill no matter how small a difference
