After cleaning up the Winchester 1892 in from a previous video we take it up to Go Time Camp to shoot it for the first time since I've owned it. This Winchester 1892 that was built 1904 according to the serial number look up websites. I may have said 1906 in the video.
Another great design by John Browning. With production running from 1892 to 1932, Winchester produced just over one million guns in this model.
Got this particular one at an auction in 2003, would be graded out as poor, so I tied to clean it up the best I could and go ahead a shoot it. Unfortunately I was unable to get the hammer pivot screw out, after some repeated attempts. I welcome any suggestions on how to get that out, feel free to send a PM or post a comment.
As you can see in the video we did the sandbag and string on the trigger trick for the first shot. There was no issues with it so fired normally from then on.
This one is in .38 wcf or .38-40 caliber, which surprised me on how hard it was hitting the targets, it was really putting a hurting on the steel critters. I should have done a close up on one showing the the impact mark and dent. So when I said maybe I wouldn't shoot a deer with it, hmm, may have changed my mind on that.

I have used the 38-40 for deer hunting in Wis. back in the late 70's, the action was very fast and clean. Very tight pattern for 3 rounds in a 180 deg swing on a running bucks. ut that was a very long time ago.

After I looked at the steel targets I could see that this is a hard hitting load. Would seem like a great woods rifle. Take care and thanks!

I have a 38-40 1892 model. This gun has been in the family for at least 80 years that I can account for. Hunted deer for many years with it and it makes a nice clean kill on deer and is a joy to carry in the woods. Would recommend a sling, if you hunt big game with it, so that you can get the game out without beating up the gun. Also have a 38-55 for moose and larger game. This one is a 1894 model and they both look the same.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that gun. You have to sometimes be a little aggressive with the lever action because it is by your force that it works. The action will smooth out the more you shoot it. It's not quite as slick as my 38/40 model 1889 Marlin but it is still a good gun. When John Browning designed that gun it was one of his best designs for Winchester and has one of the strongest actions ever made in a lever action.

I know this is 2+ years old, but in addition to the penetrating oil, I'd suggest giving the screw a whack with a brass punch - one on each end of the screw, or go back and forth between the ends for a few whacks. Sometimes it can be threads right in the center that are locked up and the oil doesn't quite get to them

I have had good luck on stuck screws with lightly taping the top of the screwdriver as you try and turn it out.
@alexandervamp1

If you want to remove the screw you have two options. 1. remove the stock soak in warm penetrating oils. the heat the off screw side then check the screw to see if it breaks loose. 2. Drill out a area insert & then use a screw removal bit clean it up and get a replacement screw. Good luck.

I just inherited a winchester 1892 from my father. Thanks to your video and comments, I was able to determine tonight it was manufactured in 1915. Mine has an octagonal cowboy barrel that measures 23.5". As it is in excellent condition, I'd love to buy a box of ammo and run a few rounds threw it. Is the smokeless powder safe, or should I be looking for black powder rounds? Family lore has it belonging to My great great grandfather, James Ray. Jim as the family called him was the first appointed chief of police in Houston Tx, and Justice of the Peace for 20+ years after that. There was a story about the Winchester having to do with some Army unit rebeling and a posse judge Ray was a part of. Sadly all those with even third hand knowledge of the story are now gone.
@whiterook85

+Jeff Ray Smokeless is fine. Most of the loads are pretty light, you don't have to worry about any damage. A lot easier to clean afterwards to. Sounds like a real beauty.

Agree with whiterook. Though old guns shooting the heavy 45-70 or even 30-30 may need to stick to cowboy black powder light loads, the 38-40 could shoot either. The 1873 I got made in 1891 had been shot alot with black powder loads and not cleaned. It took me an hour of using brushes and cloth to get it pretty clean. Happy shooting!

I have an old Marlin 1889 38/40, a Winchester model 1873 in 32/20 and with all of the screws that were stubborn I used a manual hammer driven screwdriver to take screws out. The main thing that you have to make sure of is that the bit being placed into the screw must fit tightly and all the way into the screw groove. They will come out if you are patient and have the right tools. NO PENETRATING OIL UNLESS YOU SEE MOVEMENT.

Why would one not use penetrating oil? It is designed to help loosen stuck screws.

Like ditto 1958 I'm a bit late to your video(s)....Just to let you know, and this came from a gunsmith/collector/big time hand loader of "old time" revolver and rifle cartridges....The 38-40 was AT LEAST as popular as a self defense and hunting round (in it's glory years) as the 44-40 was in it's prime....And was for all practical purposes and intents reinvented when the .40 S&W came along. Years after he told me that I ran across some very interesting ballistics tests and studies, conducted by a certain VERY well know ballistics lab here in the US that reflected that very thing! Even when black powder was used in the 38-40 (fired from a 1st Generation Colt's SAA) and smokeless was used (of course) in the 40 S&W (fired from a 3rd Generation semi-auto S&W pistol)! The best bullets for BOTH rounds came within a hair of being the same weights and configuration (and similar hollow points worked well in both as a matter of fact)....Talk about reinventing the wheel.....Enjoyed the video a lot as I am currently circling, with intent to buy, a certain Model 92 in 44-40 that caught my eye at one of the local gun stores.....

The 38-40 came out about 5 years after the 44-40, when they had learned more about getting accuracy out of these larger bore rifles. The 38-40 was more accurate and had a flatter trajectory as compared to the 44-40. Ned Roberts wrote about his. He compared it with his earlier 44-40.

Heat the surrounding area around the screw up with a micro torch and that will work using an impact driver in the process would be a good idea.

Oil the screw with Kroil for a few days, Starting on day two, with a hollow ground proper size screwdriver bit and plastic head hammer give the screw a firm punch and a drop of Kroil again. Repeat for a few days as it took years to rust in so it will take days to loosen out. The Kroil and J-B Bore Paste can be used for barrel cleaning after that. You can buy these two as a kit. Check Brownells on this as they have a great video on maintaining the bore with these products.

I've had that same issue on my rifle, I have a 1892 made in 1923. Getting the screw out out all you have to do is; soak the screw, use the proper screw driver and TAP the driver with a hammer(small ballpeen) a few times to break up the rust or corrosion that is binding the screw.

This cartridge is numbered backwards...it is a 40 caliber with 38 guns of black powder originally.. the casing is actually a 45 case necked to 40 caliber. The 44-40 cartridge is a 45 casing necked to a 44 caliber bullet.... confusing but no one tells it exactly correct

G`day from the land downunder mate. One tool that I would try is called an Impact Driver. Its a screwdriver with an inbuilt forward or reverse mechanism and is used in conjunction with a hammer. The business end has a screwdriver blade and the other end a flat peice that you hit with a hammer. This action will shock and twist the screw hopefully with the desired result. I have used them on old motorcycles and cars for many years with success. Good luck and best wishes.

Good point. I used Buffalo Arms ammo and mine worked a little smoother with it. I have a Winchester 1873 in 38 W.C.F. and took me an hour to clean the bore and action after I bought it. The black powder really mucks things up and back in 1891 when mine was made, they would shoot it hundreds of times before cleaning.

If you didn't try it already,use a good penetrating lubricant,let it soak and take a gunsmith screwdiver with a perfecly fitting hollow ground bit,and tap it with a hammer,then drive it at the same time.Similar to Bakedbeans advice but gentler.CARFULLY applied heat to the receiver near the screw may be needed.I have several 1892s in .38WCF,one was a (farm find) that turned out to be in 98-99% condition rifle after years of old oil were removed! By the way those BH loads are mild.Nice vidio.
@jamesmcdonald6809
@jamesmcdonald6809 8 лет назад
I would take the stock off and soak the whole receiver and action in some kind of penetrating oil. then if screw still stuck try tapping a hammer while turning the screw driver. after that if it doesn't want to come out it needs heat like a small torch

Yeah boy, when the old cartridges were being used in these guns when they were new rifles can you imagine just how the old timers confidence levels went up? I'm not knocking new firearms, I have quite a few modern weapons. But I really have come to respect the older calibers and high quality workmanship that went into making the old 'antique' firearms. Especially, the lever guns. I guarantee that that old 38/40 can hold it's own to the .38 special and even the .357 when the load and bullet is configured right. Keep on shooting and help defend our 2nd Ammendment rights. Who knows, it may be the pre 64 firearms that end up defending this nation one day. Nobody knows just how many non registered firearms are out there. I can remember when my dad bought an M1 carbine with two 15 round clips for less than $50. True military surplus in cosmoline. It's still around.

I had to get back with you concerning this Winchester. As I type, a dear friend of mine is in the woods, on a deer hunt, with the twin to the rifle featured in this video....Two days ago he took a nice size meat doe with his Winchester '92 chambered in .25-20! Over the most recent deer season he has taken deer for the freezer with his .38-55, and 32.20, .44-40 and .35 Remington (from a Remington semi auto). Wiz bang rifles, scopes, calibers, and ammo are nice I'm sure, but just because it's "old and obsolete" in the eyes of some does not make it so.

It really depends on what shape it is, and how much it means to you to own it. I know there's some sites out there that will give you a rough idea. How much blueing is left, what shape is the barrel in, does the stock have any cracks. It really could be $500 or $5000. Not trying to give you vague answer.

That one was made in 1907, it has the round barrel and not the octagon barrel, not that big of a deal, but it the octagon is a little more desirable. The current price looks fair, worth at least a few hundred more. Don't see a pic of the inside the barrel. The rest is in ok shape, remember these were used a lot differently than our firearms of today.
