The next installment of The Winchester Chronicals brings us the Winchester Model 1894 which is basically where this story ends......this rifle was so perfect that improving on its design was impossible.

Love this iconic rifle. An American legend. The one I own was manufactured in1937.

Thank You Milsurp Garage ,Long Wood is the Term I am familiar with. They are increasingly more Expensive and Rare. I found a 1950 model 64 which is the 1894 Sporterized Version with a pistol grip type stock and a shorter magazine tube, 4 rounds, and a 24" barrel in 32 Winchester Special! I dont know if you reload but I found that as long as I can still find bullets and Brass I could basically learn to load for Everything I shoot or buy. You can do this! Seriously Brother, It is some how so rewarding when you take a deer with a cartridge you loaded yourself ! I started with a used (still have it)Dillon 550 for pistol and it made me realize what a waste of time a single stage would be,then get a single stage for your rifle thanks again for your Great Material.

Thanks for the kind words. I will reload one of these days when I’m retired and in my last home. Right now I’m lucky to find time to shoot!

Fantastic and very informative I just purchased a Umarex legends 1894 BB/Pellet rifle that actually ejects shells. I wanted to see just how much it compared to the real thing. Your video stunned me how cool it really is. I hope that one day I can own the real deal. Thanks again for the education.

You need the Marlin 1893....Winchester's rival during the early 20th century and in some ways stronger and smoother than Winchester. Also, the .30 WCF came out in 1895.

The main reason that a lot of people started wanting pre 64 guns of any make or caliber is because of the laws that were changed in that year. Anything bought before that is almost impossible to track and know who has them. Anything bought after that is always registered as a new weapon and the owner is recorded with the ATF now. That is what a lot of people were bitching about when people would go to gun shows and buy guns without any paperwork from dealers who did have weapons to sell like that. There are many guns that have bett4er build quality but most build quality in weapons actually got better because of computer design and tighter tolerances. Some newly manufactured guns are crap quality but most are actually better now. My Dad use to buy guns from the back of gun magazines and catalogs. My first deer rifle was an M-1 carbine with two 15 round magazines and he paid $59 for it. Try that today and see if you could find that kind of a deal. I can remember looking at some of the catalogs back in the early 60s and it amazes me what guns are being sold for these days compared to what you could but then. You could buy just about anything and have it delivered to your doorstep by the mailman. How I long for the old days sometimes and wish we could repeal some of the stupid laws that our so called representatives have burdened us with. Take more of our rights away. I have seen our rights stomped on my whole life and now we have opted to give them up so we can be safe. What a crock of shit.

I have pre-64 and post 64 Model 94s. The Model 1873 made in 1891 (38 W.C.F.) I have, is the gun that "won the west" and would be THE lever-gun (other than the Henry 1860 that cost more than my truck to buy, IF you could ever find one) to own. Anyone interested, shoot me a message on my channel. I have the gun (original unmolested condition) with ammo, tin sign and the DVD movie "Winchester 73'".

The post 64s aren't that cool because of the receiver material. It is some sort of alloy that you simply can't reblue without using like a Ceracote or however it's spelled. The receiver will remain almost in-the-white after the black wears off and then you're stuck. Even if you could have one of each NOS, you could tell a difference. The post '64 1894 angle-eject with the receiver safety is the epitome of clownshow.

@Hunt or Die Your description is pretty accurate. If you're looking for more information, search for "sintered". It's a metallurgical term so spall-chuck just won't find it.

The 30/30 caliber was maked as 30 WCF and was introduced in 1895. You keep referring to a bullet as the 32/40 but there was no such animal. The main calibers that were available for this weapon were the 32/20, 38/40/,44/40,38/55/ and the 45/70. After those cartridges were the Win 30 WCF which was the venerable 30/30 cartridge. There were other big bore cartridges but the ones I referenced before 1895 were all black powder cartridges. I have an original Model 1873 in 32/20, a Win Model 1886 in 44/40 and a Win Model 1894 in 45/70/ All of these guns have been handed down from my Father and our paternal line and are all fully functional and original to their 1800s manufacture dates. I now can shoot regular smokeless powder rounds through all of these rifles and I started with Western Super X ammunition which is manufactured to the rifles specs not to exceed the rifles' chamber and barrel pressures. If you don't deviate from the specs you can reload smokeless powders in the old cartridge calibers and not have to worry about all of the problems associated with black powder. I also have a Marlin Safety rifle right side eject saddle carbine in 38/40 caliber manufactured in 1893. The Marlin far outperforms the Winchester I have in the same caliber. I have taken quite a few whitetails with that old 38/40 rifle and will use it before a lot of other rifles because it is such a really sweet and slick operating firearm.

I am not a gunsmith at all, in fact in most states it is illegal for me to own pliers!! In my opinion if you really want a simple very fine and well built lever action rifle. You can do no better than the Marlin big bore lever actions. I own and shoot five of them now, yes I know how lucky I am. But have spent years putting them together, and try and shoot at least once a day. If you don't shoot you can't hit, my opinion and worth just what I am charging for it, lol. Vaya Con Dios
