I just passed the 47 year mark of working on garage doors. This video is one of the few on RU-vid that i was able to watch without screaming at my laptop or thinking " this person is an idiot". Garage doors are big, heavy and can really mess up your day. Over the years, i have seen injuries much worse that "loosing a couple teeth". It still puzzles me that the stupid things a guy will do trying to save paying a service call and have a door fixed correctly

Thank you very much for making this video. Helpful to actually see one of the stickers. BTW this is in the 2018 IBC with very confusing words in Section 1709.5.1. Engineering wise, the reason this is important, is that when you get a big hole in your exterior wall from one of these doors failing during a windstorm, it is like allowing someone to start blowing into a balloon. The internal pressure rises and can then push up your roof, or push out your walls.

Some of the negative comments here are hostile and moronic. Matt is full of useful information which comes from his own research regardless of sponsorship. He brings up subjects many people would never have thought of which can be used by anyone to decide for themselves the best way to go on their own projects. Without Matt's input some jobs might be built with hidden mistakes or less than should be.
@dw9147

I agree Matt provides very useful information. The door he is showing wouldn't be allowed in Miami-Dade County because it is not impact rated. He even shows us the proof of what a weak door this is. My garage door is impact rated and the strength is alot higher. My garage door is rated +55/-64, A garage door rated for 107 mph would not pass our building code in Miami-Dade. Here where I live try in Miami-Dade County, old door is Wind Load 175 mph (3-second gust). But the newer codes are even stronger. But, Matt does provide great information, but remember his knowledge is limited to where he lives and he is correct. But you may or may not need much higher stronger materials. After Hurricane Andrew, I don think there was a single garage door left. Every house was missing a garage door after Hurricane Andrew. If you want to build something strong Risk Category IV wind speeds are as follows: Miami-Dade County Risk Category IV Buildings and Structures: 195 mph. Broward County Risk Category IV Buildings and Structures: 185. Hurricanes don't play.

Garage doors with ceiling mounted chain motors often have a chain disengage lever with a rope pull hanging down. A burgler can thread a clothes hanger through the top seal of the door, and grab the handle on that rope, releasing the door from the chain. Remove the wood handle so that the burgler has nothing to grab.

I went through Hurricane Andrew as a kid. OSB window covers didn't help. A small softball sized puncture changed the air pressure so much, it collapse the ceiling as soon as the puncture happened. The whole house needed to be gutted down to the framing and rebuilt. Mainly from the water intrusion. The garage door held up though. I would recommend you evacuate in any Cat 4 or 5 hurricane. Our house was cinder block though.

I’m kind of surprised that you didn’t talk size at all. When I had my tract home built in 2003, I ordered 3 options in the garage. Option 1 was a 3 car garage, Option 2 was an insulated garage door, and Option 3 was 8’ high garage doors. Everything was ok till 2019, when the 16x8’ door kinda folded in, I replaced it with a CHI overhead, insulated and fully laminated door. Today I saw your video and learned a few things about doors. I like in a NW suburb of Chicago. The video was great and thanks. Only question I have is why not a 3 car garage and not an 8’ high door?

A few years back, there was a U.S. Air Force base in Florida where they didn't design the hangars to survive high wind if the hangar doors where left open or got blown in. I think a few administrative buildings were under-designed, too. Anyway, a modest hurricane hit, and the Air Force base did not have a good time. Spoiler Alert: Air Force bases are supposed to be better at surviving hurricanes than shoddy vacation homes.
@magneric
@magneric 3 года назад
You'll be surprised how many Air Force buildings/roads are built with subpar standards. They love to pick the "cheapest" contractors with the cheapest materials that charge the government rating, which is pretty close to double what they would normally charge to civilians. In Nebraska they're still using buildings that have been there since WW2 which are barely maintained that should be condemned because of how hazardous they are to be in but they're just going to wait for someone to die or a building to fall apart before they change anything.
@bamascubaman
@bamascubaman 3 года назад
Modest? You are either deliberately talking out of your ass or woefully ignorant. The event you are talking about is hurricane Michael hitting the Florida coast & Tyndall Air Force base as a Cat 5, with winds recorded up to 162 mph.
@TheRealE.B.
@TheRealE.B. 3 года назад
@@magneric Governments going with the lowest bidder to "save taxpayer money" is definitely a real problem, but I am under the impression that the Florida incident was more of an engineering snafu than a problem with the contractor(s). I don't really blame contractors for charging the government more than they would private industry, though. The paperwork associated with a government construction project is horrendous, so I assume the overhead for a contractor is higher than usual. It's also really hard to sue the federal government, so higher profit margins to compensate for higher risk of getting f***ed over by their customer is probably reasonable. I'm under the impression that newbie contractors who bid their first government job like it's a private job often end up getting milked by the government because they don't know what they're getting into. Still, the whole ecosystem attracts contractors who are good at navigating government contracts, not necessarily at building things. I'm not sure if there's really a way to fix this, or if inefficiencies are inevitable in an organization as large and complex as the federal government trying to maintain continuity of operations instead of trying to make a profit and exit or just generate externalities like a lot of megacorporations do. Not that the federal government doesn't have externalities. I just know that maintaining systems sucks in the modern era, with techology changing as fast as it does. By the time everyone learns the new way of doing things, it's already outdated.

Didn't show it but, it seems as if the _easiest_ way to reinforce a garage door is to ensure that the brackets connecting the track to the wall studs are inline (or close to) the _closed_ position for the rollers on the door panels. I.E. if your panels are 24" high, your brackets between the track and the wall are approximately 24" apart going up each side of the door.
