Very good video AJ. The changes I saw when I started taping the "holes" between splitter, airdamn and other thigns on the bumper the difference was huge on track. Like 1-2sec per lap huge. The car suddenly had front downforce (it felt like it had none before that).

Seeing how the hood vents actually work was very interesting! The air going into the top of the grill gets pulled right out from the high pressure air flowing over the hood vents pretty consistently. Wondering if the side by side style of this car of the horizontal opening going across the front of the hood is a more effective design for heat extraction? Very cool testing!

This video makes me both excited and weary of playing with splitters and aero. The wind tunnel testing really highlights that only so much can be done on CFD if something such as the angle of the splitter is off and is creating lift and not downward forces. Thanks for the vid!
@ajhartmanaero
@ajhartmanaero 4 года назад
The splitter was only a small contributor to lift since once we got some angle into it, we finally made some downforce. The radiator not being ducted allowed copious amounts of air in the engine bay and under the car causing a lot of lift.

Just looking at the car w/ that massively long splitter, I would never guess it'd have front end lift. That's why we test & validate. Did you consider lengthening the splitter end fence you created to the bottom of the 1st or 2nd dive plane? Or even something like the C7 Z06 Stage 3 splitter end fence?

How about that AERO Bible you collected & have as a resource ... epic. I normally Just keep a collection of magazines as opposed to the articles themselves. Cool to see that and the downforce from little blocks up front. still room for improvement. The M style side mirrors I feel would help alot guiding the vortices.

Great content overall in your channel. At what angle relativrly to the ground did the front splitter start to make df?
@ajhartmanaero
@ajhartmanaero 4 года назад
Its not quite that simple cause with side plates, ducted radiator, large louvers, etc, we could have made more Df without changing the splitter angle. So since the tunnel measures total Df, it hard to say just a splitter angle change will be the only change to downforce. But generally you want the splitter atleast level, if not, nose down a tiny bit.

@CaniLupine
@CaniLupine 3 года назад
That splitter desperately needs endplates on the sides, like an infinity wing setup, and double the angle of the canards. The upward angle of the splitter would actually help accelerate the air underneath the front end to lower the pressure. You just need the endplates to gain positive pressure on the top, otherwise the splitter isn't really doing anything.
@ajhartmanaero
@ajhartmanaero 3 года назад
We did side plates on our latest tunnel video. This customer didn’t want to run them. Your second part is false tho. Since it’s a flat splitter leading to a dirty floor, the upward angle was not good. If it was a profiled splitter leading to a flat floor, an open throat to the splitter is beneficial. Details matter.

Can't understand why you want so much turbulent airflow around the sides of the tires?. As far as the louvers, as you go towards the windshield, your louvres need to be higher. As air flows out of the Louvre, it either lifts or interrupts the high speed flow. Mayhaps I'm just confused, but your methods are correct, but your deductions and understandings are all over the place???
@ajhartmanaero
@ajhartmanaero 3 года назад
You don’t “want” turbulent flow around the tires, it’s just how it is. As for Louvers, I’m pretty sure you are confused. Taller at the front and shorter towards the rear provided better results.

In this tunnel they can plug in speeds and see what your calculated lift or down force is, watch cleetus McFarlands video the guy explains it in great detail. For example he needs an extra 500 HP to maintain 170 mph because his step is so bad

Not sure if an S duct is the same as an S flap, but that's what I was thinking when I saw you block the lower corner of the tire. I know McBeath did a full height S flap in front of the tire that went all the way up to the top of the fenderwell on a BTCC Civic I think, and they tried ramps in front of the tire and then the flap and he was surprised that the flap worked better than the ramps. Anyway, think that would be better than the little 3" flap on top of the splitter. If the car has fenderwells and it's legal, could cut them out in front of the struts to allow air out of the engine compartment too. Air looked really dirty over the rear window too during the smoke testing, like there was a lot of flow separation. VGs might help that situation. Video didn't really show where the separation started, but I'd think you'd want VGs significantly forward of where they are on EVOs due to curvature of the roof. Loved the video. Thanks!!!
@ajhartmanaero
@ajhartmanaero 4 года назад
@@jonmortensen9990 Yeah we would have loved to play with different size and shapes S flaps but it all comes down to time. I literally found some scrap foam in the back room to fab those up in about 2 minutes. The test you are mentioning I think was in one of McBeaths books cause I remember that exact one. As for the dirty air off the roof, if you look at the guys eyes doing the smoke he looks forward in the tunnel a few times. Since the test was done with the FSAE team there was a lot of people in the tunnel. I think we were causing some of that, especially cause when you see the smoke hit the center of the wing just before the video cut it does get good clean air for a bit.
