Too Long??? Press here goto 9:16; where I tightened up my quarters VTPR sorta
FLEX THEM WINGS!!!
It's an original Marks Models kit built light (2 lbs 2 oz) on a rear CG for slope fun. Maiden flight in '83. Have always loved and kept this one as "special" but have always flown it hard; can't resist seeing the wings flex! It's dainty capabilities are impressive too, it's very light and predictable even to the point of manipulating the stall for differing effects, it also "predictably" flick snaps. Check out the "zooming exits", honestly, I can't explain this ones ability in that function but I certainly use it for exit speed. Seems that rather than having a wing with flaps... the wings flap. Ha
@ 11:54 after the snap roll check the acceleration while the wing is un-flexing: also note acceleration is also during a maintained 2-3 degree exiting climb, also note that "it's a long-drawn-out flap" in releasing the wing loading slowly: run it at 3/4 speed and, 1/2 speed and, 1/4 speed:
Curious over-acceleration whilst the wings are un-flexing that may also include a Brachistocrone type curved-flight-path leading into the un-flexing period having an effect too?
IDK for sure excepting that "I get exit speed" by using that technique: it's not easy to hit: it used to just "happen" from time to time: I eventually "learned" how to do it: no way I could explain how! Time!
My new Windfree (from the newer remake kit) has stiffer/less flexy wings: I can't do it with that one
If I was to offer one "Key" to Rudder-Elevator-Sailplanes in general it's that a slight bit of down elevator with rudder commands super-heightens the Rudders' authority; you don't need to "pitch" it down, just feather in some down elevator as you apply the Rudder ("Key" especially at low air-speeds); you'll exit with same carried-speed and with very little altitude loss; "importantly", you'll have banked in half the time as well as causing less overall drag per bank angle change.
Rudder feels soft or unresponsive? Feather in "a-little" down elevator, It'll bank faster!
Be careful in turning downwind towards the face, I am "breaking the rules" in that manner but in having "ample airspeed" and in maintaining positional advantages to do it with. Learn this in using a huge safety margin! (It "will" Bite!)
In every pilot felt "sense" The Windfree is "Beautiful" and "Pleasurable" to fly
I usually feel like I'm "3D Surfing" in the ridge lifts.
The Windfree is more like a "3D Ice-Skating Sky Dance".
The controls are "Pure and to a Touch" and its Penetration/Speed Carry is "really good" or what most would say "it's got nice legs"!
Hope you enjoyed!
Robert

Mark is my cousin. They used to give me a plane or two every Xmas. I still have a Wanderer 99 i built in 74. Still have my FGK from about '79. Mark or Rod won the nationals with a windfree, or maybe both in different years, can't remember. You wouldn't believe how fast they could build and cover...amazing. And yes, Mark and Rod built the Jonathan Livingston Seagull planes for the movie.

Way Cool he designed some really great Sailplanes, the Windfree in particular for me but his others were great too.

Thanks Mike: That one has flown at Elephant Mountain as has the Aquila and the flying wing Delta. The Windfree wing is actually designed to flex: the main spar lays sideways. It's great for thermals too. Skyed it out many times from the slopes up there. Cheers and God Bless!

@@robertshaver4432 You're very welcome Robert! That's awesome I was wondering if you could thermal while sloping, very cool! I have a 3.2 meter Pulsar that is all carbon and Kevlar fuse with a Kevlar leading edge and carbon caped ribs. It thermals great but I would be hesitant to throw it off Elephant mountain into the wind! Lol! I'm not at your level! 👍 Cheers buddy and God bless!

@@mikesrcgarageWhen you do go slopeing take something that can be damaged without concerns. Landing zones are very turbulent (and rocky in the desert). The Pulsar sounds much too nice to dent up. There are some hills on the east side of Calico dry lake whereas you could fly and land from the Dry lake itself and yet still take advantage of the lift provided by the hills. Nothing says that you have to be on the hills to use their lift especially if you've electric to launch with. Just snuggle up to the hills base as near as a good Landing area allows. Cheers

@@robertshaver4432 this is what I will first fly on the slopes, a Manticore that has been crashed many times and went from a two meter thermal glider to a 60" warmliner. its a fun plane to fly and crash! Lol! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7B5Jqd7K3qM.html

Wow! Thanks Robert!! I met Dan at Marina beach last week and we were flying 1m hand thrown gliders in the light lift. Makes me nervous with all the Summer vacationers there not paying attention... I went out to your club last Friday but by the time I finally got there it was almost noon and really windy. Dan showed me around and we talked stories for a bit, nice nice place. I will bring my Windfree and have you put a second set of eyes on her before I do anything stupid. I like the idea of the auction. If I get rid of one or two planes I'll have plenty of room for several fuses and wing sets. he he he

Carl: I posted a new video of your old Windfree that you (and the builder) might enjoy. I've been dialing in her airframe (control throws, CG, washout etc...) to suit my fancy! Titled: """Windfree Slopeing: Adrenalin? Oh Yes!""" The thumbnail says """na na na na NOOooo lol""" Enjoy, Cheers! Robert

Another great video, thanks for sharing Robert. Only goes to show how much fun one can have with a rudder / elevator glider. For that same reason I love my Sagitta 900.

@robertshaver4432 7 лет назад
Oh... I love the Sagitta too, have never owned one but have flown them and they are awesome birds. Have flown both airfoils and believe it or not I liked the Non-Selig airfoil better, I guess its a Clark-Y or similar to it. Thanks for the compliments. It's always good to hear from other Sailplane enthusiasts. Cheers and wishes of good winds.

That's quite some Dihedral on that wing. :-D
@robertshaver4432
@robertshaver4432 7 лет назад
exactly to the plans but I did opt to only slightly moisten the top sheeting when I glued it on so it would shrink and pull some elliptical dihedral as it dried, it only added a slight curvature to each panel, probably only about 1/8th of an inch of curved dihedral per panel. Wouldn't do it again because it didn't curve the same way on each wing. differences in the wood was the cause. Still... it did very little anyway so no harm done. the idea was to assimulate the very renouned Hobbie Hawk which was very popular in its time. Thanks for the responce!

Hi Robert, I have a wind free from Hobby Hangar that I had a guy build for me recently. I am a rusty intermediate power pilot and have dabbled with sailplanes a few times over the years. The first time I saw a Windfree fly at my local field Blackford High I was in love! That was 1978! Where would you start the CG for High Start or winch launch? Should it be different for the slope? What linear dimensions or angles should I start with for my surface control throws using the dual rates? I look forward to flying Cardiac Hill sometime soon. Carl
@robertshaver4432
@robertshaver4432 7 лет назад
Carl, looking forward to seeing you at Cardiac hill sometime. At videos end you can see the control movements, they were on high rates. The elevator slot on mine is slightly enlarged or lengthened Probably only 1/8th of an inch on each end to allow slightly more elevator throw. Rudder throw should be "all that you can get" for slopeing again see the videos end and same for thermaling. I'll assume that your rudder hasn't been enlarged so get all the throw that you can. My CG has been cautiously moved as far back as I can but for first flights the recommended CG will be fine (elevator is plenty powerful in being a full flying elevator). I have never winched mine up (never put at hook on it) but again the CG should be fine at the recommended position. Generally for the hook position though is right on CG and then you work it back however with the Windfree the hook is "permanently mounted" to a bulkhead as per the plans and I would use exactly that. I have thermaled mine but was from a slope or piggybacked from a powered plane a few times. Again though I started the CG at plans recommendation and re-adjusted rearward to suit. I belong to Salinas Area Modelers (SAM), we are having a thermal winch competition Saturday July 8th, It'd be cool if you brought your Windfree even if just so I could provide "in-hand advice". I'm almost positive that our sites address is 24200 Chualar dump road. Reservation road turns into River road when it crosses Hwy 68 going South (pretty near Toro park area) Take River road South to the fork in the road (probably 7 miles) whereas to stay on River road you must literally "turn right" BUT DON'T TURN RIGHT instead veer left to stay on "the main road and Cross the big bridge" (is Chualar Rd.) (crosses Salinas river), "in" the next bend in the road (about 1mi.) turn right (seemingly into farm fields) and stay on blacktop for as long as you can, this will take you through our gate and your there. You will however likely come via Hwy 101 Chualar exit and couple of wierd turns (follow your phone) to Chualar road, once on Chualar road "in" the first bend in the road (about 1 mile) is our entrance (on the left this time) (stay on blacktop as above). If you cross the Salinas River bridge you've gone too far. Salinas Area Modelers has a web site (+map), It'd be cool to see you there! Note; I'll be there next weekend too (we're having an auction Saturday July 1st), you'd be welcome to attend and bid if you saw something that you liked FYI. 24200 Chualar Dump road (google maps search). Hope to see you there and yes if you showed up at our Thermal Winch Contest you'd be welcome to join in, it's a no charge contest (free) and we usually only have about 10 Contestants at the most. Robert

P.S. We are an AMA Sanctioned field so AMA membership is required "to fly". Also Elevator is probably only about 10 Degrees up and 10 Degrees down, Rudder is probably 40 Degrees right and 40 Degrees left, 30 degrees each way is likely OK.

Ed! We sure miss your antics, good to see you're doing fine!! Field almost flooded but I think were going to survive. entry road flooded thru the trees and into the field but SAM itself is (just) high and dry, except for some wind damage we made it. Good to hear from you and looking forward to your return to our nice weather??? Take Care!

Thank you it's one of my favorite Sailplanes, Plans or a kit may be hard to find, for awhile and recently someone kitted the Windfree again, not sure of who but I believe they aren't kitting it today. Keep your eyes open on E-bay or the like is my best advice to find one. I hope that you find one, Good Luck
